Has anyone else noticed this?

Over the last few months I've noticed something odd. Birds around here have been very active at night, during times when they used to be quiet. I've looked online for stuff in my area that says something about it but I've found nothing. One of my friends puts it up to global warming, but I wonder if it's because there is more man made light around making them think it's not night? And it's not just been in the warmer months either, it's also been during the winter months, like back around Yule time. Myloters have any of you noticed that this is happening in your area? What have are your thoughts on what might be causing it?

Birds have been waking me up around four am, about an hour before sunrise for nearly forty years now, I remember complaining even as a kid. This is why I wear ear plugs. I am a night owl and work late and when I am going to bed as much as I love these little feathered things, they are yapping ha ha.

I've always been a night owl too, and I'm used to the crickets or cicadas making noise, but this is happening like around midnight and going on until morning. I've became more noise sensitive recently - and at first I thought it was due to that. Like I just hadn't noticed before, but then I started asking around and other people around here have noticed it too.

I am like this too, it must be age. I used to be able to fall asleep to anything and sleep through anything. Let me know if you ever find out what this birds flying in circles is when winter is on it's way, that bugs me every year.

Are you talking about before they migrate or the birds that stay in your area year round?

In my area this is very common. There are two big trees right next to my house and it is home to several crows and other small birds. They make a lot of noise at night. I think you are correct that they mistake human house lights as real daylight. I am quite used to this noise as I have been living here for so many years.

I feel sorry for the poor birds that are getting their sleep schedules confused. It seems to be happening in lots of places.

Yes, I've noticed this too! It's strange, because when I was a kid, birds seemed to sing in the morning and to wake me up! Then, when I got older, I started hearing them around 4 or 5 a.m., before the sun rose. Now, I sometimes hear them around midnight. I don't know what's causing it, and no one has really said much about it to me before. It could be global warming or the lights outside at night. I have no idea, but I don't see birds out much during the day time anymore. Also, the butterflies in my area are virtually all white! On rare occasion, I'll see a lavendar butterfly or a yellow one... but not the multi-coloured ones I used to see. Have you noticed that in your area?

I hadn't thought about the butterfly thing too much until now, but most of what I have seen have been solid colored ones. My friend sitting here with me said she's seen a Monarch this year, but I haven't. I know that most of the cross pollinators are endanger of dying out though, so I guess it makes sense.

There is one thing that I have never seen explained. I tried finding it a few times. When it starts getting cold, they all fly together looping in circles. Now that I would like to know why they do that. It almost seems like they are getting nervous that it is getting cold, like anxious behavior. Maybe a bird expert will happen along this post.
