Do people still watch television?

United States

I've just realized that I spend more time on the computer than I do watching television. Certain shows i like to watch are being played online now, and it got me to wondering, how much TV do other people watch? Has the internet finally eliminated the need for the old boob tube?

You know, for somebody who claims that television is coming to an end, you post or answer a lot of discussions regarding television.

hello, well my friend i think whatever you said is fairly correct. Internet has really hampered the tv ratings. People now days are watching more shows on the internet than on Tv. People now a days can download every episodes of every television shows just after a day or two from the time of telecast of that episode. So rather than watching it on tv they simply download them from internet and watch whenever they like.

I love streaming video and streaming audio. I have Pandora on my phone and I use my earphones to listen to it...just like an ipod.. and also Netflix is on my phone, so I watch movies the same way.

You don't even have to download anymore. Video streaming is awesome. Doesn't take up space on your hard drive, and you can usually find everything you want.

The commercial on Pandora annoy me so much. I prefer Playlist.com or Myspace music for music, and Project Free TV for streaming. Hulu wasgood till they decided to start charging people.

I think it depends on the person. My husband was never a big TV watcher even growing up, but he spends a lot of time on the computer. I watch some TV, but not a lot, but I never have just sat and watched TV. In the last 10 years my TV watching and my computer usage has decreased.

I think I just have more things to do. I still play video games, watch TV and read I just do all three is smaller amounts. Usually by the time I have the opportunity to do my own thing, I am ready for bed.

You know Philly, since I have a computer, I never watch TV unless my son turns it on, or there is a special movie, which I have not seen in months. Plus I watch enough videos to make up for it..lol

You know, that is what my husband says, that he can't watch anything on the computer with me because the screen is small. But my monitor is as big as the TV in the bedroom, so I don't get that, all we have to do is place our chairs in the right place and it is like watching a tv..

I think the natural evolution will be to combine Tv's and computers and other media devices. Although one thing Tv's have over computers is more than one person can enjoy them at the same time. Computers are for the most part personal devices.

The couch and the TV share a symbiotic relationship. Till they invent a computer you can sit in front of with your couch, the TV still holds some pull over people. LOL

Your internet speeds are incredible there. So watching your favorite shows on the computer is more convenient if you are spending most of your time on your computer. Specially if you have a wicked fast computer with two screens. You can watch tv on the other while doing something on the other screen. I don't really watch tv anymore, there's nothing on there unless it's a favorite sport or some news. Besides, the things on tv in my country are the lamest I have seen. I can find better ones from independent shorts on youtube. I would want to see some favorite series though on my computer but our internet speeds here is a joke compared to yours there.

I guess I am taking for granted the computer speeds here. It would really suck if I had to wait for a show to load. Hopefully you guys will get faster. You're missing out on a lot. LOL.

Yeah, but not if the economy here kills us all. But it's the antiquated infrastructure here that makes it all too darn slow. Our internet pipelines from Asia too is few and not as good as that of the greater asia mainland. lol.

I can't imagine. I'm sure that would be quite nerve racking. So you guys are piggy backed from mainland Asia?

I still like to watch the BBC on occasion, mainly due to there being no adverts. Sporting events are a must on the telly; I just couldn't sit in front of my computer monitor (even though it's 22 inches wide) and watch them, it wouldn't feel right. I'm also looking forward to the Murray v Federer Tennis Final at Wimbledon tomorrow (earlier it was in 3D so we watched that for a few minutes..Serena to be exact) so it's obvious the telly is still important to me. Having said that, I do spend more time on my computer than watching telly, mainly due to my husband getting his own way with what he wants to watch..not that I'm bothered. I can ramble away on here instead!

Yes, it happens sometimes. On the BBC's HD channel if you had a television with 3D capabilities then the tennis match could be watched in 3D as an alternative. We did this with the Serena Williams final (using the specs of course) and they only use a couple of cameras but the effect was excellent. However, I couldn't watch 3D all day, every day as the brain has to work harder to process the images, apparently. No wonder my head hurt afterwards!

What did they show in 3d, did they show angles of the ball flying towards you?

The tennis match was in 3d. Ive never heard of a live sports cast aired that way.

Hi friend! Did you get your cheesesteak? What has changed is I am seeing more t.v. shows these days.A few years ago I saw more films via cable t.v.And more hockey games . But this season I saw more t.v. shows! so no , my laptop has not replaced my t.v.

There was a stretch in the 90's where there were No shows I wanted to see. So I saw movies. The films I love , I can see And Do see over and over again. But this season Revenge came out! It was a series with suspense just Like the films I love! I use my T.v. to catch up too. I use the On Demand device and catch up on series when I come in the middle. It is lovely! I also DVR shows. It is wonderful for my daytime soap. Sorry , It is a girl thing! But now I can fast forward past the storylines I don't want to watch.

I tend to prefer shows over movies myself. I think it's because a movie is a one time deal, where a show keeps you in it every day or every week. I still prefer to watch shows online asd I can see all the episodes and catch up to a series that way.

I guess it depends on how reliable the internet is in a country. I imagine if we had slow connections in the US we would still watch more TV.

We stream the internet through a Roku for our TV and movies. It saves me about 70 dollars per month and we love it. Plus you can take the Roku with you where ever you go and watch it there too. Highly recommend it.

It is a small box that you connect to your tv. It has a wireless modem inside that picks up your internet signal. Roku's run from 40-100 each depending on extras. The most expensive one includes Angry Birds (the video game). I have 4 Roku's in my house. I only pay for Netflix 7.99 each month and if I buy a movie or tv show from Amazon prime. It's like pay per view. Roku also includes many free movie and tv show channels. You can even load your facebook pictures, watch youtube videos, and shutterfly photos. I love it. I have brought it with me to the beach and to Atlanta. It easily connects to any tv set and your account just follows you. Check it out when you have the chance.

Of course they do! Maybe my Internet is like 'TV for someone who still uses a wire-hanger antenna,' but the video on my computer is more like a choppy slideshow than a television program! Besides, the Internet wouldn't be 'popular' without people talking about it on TV.

Maybe I wasn't too clear on the MAIN reason why the Internet won't eliminate television: a central tenet of Capitalism---that all of 'the Capitalist's product' (here, the channel/network's programming)--even though they buy the parts of it from tons of different sources--is ALL owned by one channel. The main reason my Internet is not 'TV-quality' is because--tho I only point my browser at one page (at a time)--it is forced to wait for content that comes from 3-to-20 other places in order to produce all the content that one site claims to bring! Again, not-so with television: I put my TV on channel 4; all the content is 'owned' by channel 4 (no matter who 'owned' it before, they bought it all and have it ready to go) and so comes straight from channel 4 to my cable-box. I guess what I'm saying is that--if a website wants to be 'better than TV'--it should run the content like a local TV-station runs its content.

There came a point in time when I almost lost interest in watching TV. Well certainly because I've been spending most of my time if not in school, then in front of the computer. But now I realize that I still miss watching TV and there are some things that you can't experience with the Internet as much as you are with watching TV. :D As of today I've resumed in watching out for my fave shows, and besides I really am not the kind who would watch out for the uploaded episodes online instead.

Oh wow you are one of the reasons Glee is still on air. I can't stand that show. LOL. I tried to watch it a couple times and it was like watching an ongoing version of Highschool Musical. I stopped after 2 episodes and vowed never to return.
• Philippines
8 Jul 12
Haha, I see. Although, I still don't get it why some people can stand the show, I must say I am not really an avid follower of Glee. I get to see some of its episodes, yes. Only because some of the songs they render in the show happened to be the ones I like, I mean those from the classic musicals. And I also like how some of the kids do their versions. But I couldn't say that I am a fan of the show. :D

Oh, mostly are local TV shows like the news, talk shows and Korean dramas aired on the TV networks in our area. I also try to keep up with Glee and America's Next Top Model sometimes, but I wish I could also see those aired on cable networks. I still have to get subscribed, though. Hehe.

TV sidelined? - Sad to say it has with me, but I do intend to start watching again before too long.
Good question; for me it would be: no. Don't get me wrong, I have a television, it's just I never watch it. Mind you, I couldn't even if I wanted to, because it has to be upgraded to digital, and I haven't done that yet. Before such phenomena as You Tube, and online streaming of movies through DVD clubs, I used to watch a lot of TV, including using my TV to watch DVDs or videos. But now, I watch movies on my PC, and don't miss TV at all. It's a bit sad to think it, because for decades, TV was a part of my life...I grew up watching it, and love the memories it provided me with. But there it is; I adore my PC, and it offers me so much; I guess television has been sidelined, sad to say. That said, I do intend to upgrade to digital and start watching my TV again; I think you lose out if you don't watch TV on a regular basis. It's part of life!

I think I listen to the radio more than I watch TV. The computer jst allows so much more, I can't see myself upgrading or spending anymore money on TV. The only thing our TV is really used for now is Video Games.

Yes, I still do watch television. Almost everyday, I am watching television shows basically cable tv shows. My television is in front of me when I am using my laptop. So I do some posting here, and form time to time glimpse on the movies. If the movies are great, then I would concentrate more on the movie and when its not, I switch between channels and post here on mylot. That is what exactly I am doing right now.

I'm more into computers while my children are into television. I don't blame them though since there are more cartoon and children friendly choices to watch on television than during my childhood times. But before they become television fanatics, I would remind them to finish their assignments and other projects. Should they get a failing grade, they will be stripped off of this privilege.

I think once they are old enough to appreciate the internet they will make the switch. I usually have to shut the TV off when I want my kids to concentrate on something. It does still have the ability to put someone in a trance.

We have cable. I don't really watch TV except for once daily... I watch Young and the Restless every day that it is on. The rest of the time the TV is on, and for me it's just for the noise. I like having the TV on for the distraction, but not just to watch. I'm at my desk on the computer and I enjoy hearing the noise in the background. I really wouldn't even need TV because I can see almost everything I want to see just by watching Netflix on my computer or watching CBS.com on my computer also.

YES! I still watch television. But not as often as I used to. Since everything is accessible on the internet, I sometimes watch tv shows on the computer.
