A Question For Those Who Travel With Laptops, Esp. Between Canada & The USA.

I am planning a trip to New York City, and deciding what to pack. While the hotel I've chosen doesn't have internet access throughout, I do want to bring my laptop with me, for the music I have stored in it (I like to listen to music at night) and so that I can empty my camera cards when it gets full. My husband, however, is worried about me trying to get it across the border from Canada insto the USA. He's worried that the TSA idiots will confiscate it. He's read articles about this happening on occasion.
In 2007, 2008, and 2009, when I was doing a lot of traveling between Canadaand the USa, I would bring my laptop across the borde. They'd ask me to turn it on to show them that it was a regular working laptop, and I always would. when they saw that it was what I said it was, they'd help me pack it back up, and send it on my way. I also think I'll wear sandals, so it'll be easier for me to take my shoes off, and put them back on.
He also mentioned that he's worried about my iPhone and iPod, two items I did no have, the last time I traveled outsde of Canada. Should I be worried about those too?
Anyway, to those who do a lot of travelling, is this an honest fear, or just paranoia?

why don't you just ask the exports at the us embassy or US customs. Better to be safe than sorry. There is a list of what you can bring and what you can't.

Personally if this is a concern, maybe you should contact your Airport security, and ask them questions about this. I am sure there are many people out there that are doing this type of thing all the time, so this should be no big deal. I would think it should still be OK as they are not much different there than here. But this does sound like a Fun adventure for sure.

My wife and I both take our computers across the border from Ontario Can. to the US every winter on our way to our winter residence in Texas. We have been doing this for at least 10 years and have never had the slightest problem. WE have always driven our car but this year we are planning to fly. This will probably be different!

Sounds like paranoia to me. I have brought my laptop everywhere I travel overseas. It's been with me all around Europe and I did go to Canada and then to the US and I had no issues with my laptop through border security. I didn't even have to turn it on or anything. I don't know if it had anything to do with me being Australian but I wouldn't have thought so. You're allowed to bring laptops with you so just go for it I say, they can't take it away from you for no reason.
