They want me to do what??

So I'm scheduled at work today from 5:30-11:30, which is basically a closing shift for the store. Since we've been having a huge sale and it's a Saturday, it'll probably take even longer to close and get everything straightened up. This wouldn't be a problem. However, tomorrow morning I'm scheduled at 4 AM!! There is no way I'm going to do that. If I even get to leave at 11:30 I won't get home until 12 and I'd be lucky if I fell asleep by 12:30. I'm not sleeping for 2 or 3 hours just to wake back up and go to work again. I don't get paid enough to do that to myself and it's also illegal. I talked to my supervisor earlier in the week and told her about the situation. She said she'd tell the other managers about it. I have no idea if she did or not but I'm still going to say something tonight either before or after work. There is no way I'm coming back at 4 am, it's ridiculous. This is only a part time job, it's not my career or livelihood and I'm not going to do that to myself for a minimum wage job. What would you do? Sleep for a couple hours and then go back to work or tell them you can't come in?

Thats absolutely insane. It's basically not even worth going to sleep. I would just tell them you can't come in.

That's what I told them. For me, it's not worth it to kill myself over a minimum wage job that I'm not going to be at for the rest of my life.

That's horrible! I am so sorry! I would start looking for a different job, and if you find a good one, quit this job. I would probably just go home and sleep for a couple of hours and go back to work. I hope they pay you well!

Ha, they pay me horribly. I told them I couldn't come in. For me, this is only a job while I'm in college and I'm not going to kill myself and lose sleep over a job that pays me minimum wage. To me, it's not worth it to do that to myself.

What?? That's just crazy. They are clearly taking advantage of you. You have the rights to fight. Even if you are a permanent staff, nobody would ever want to be in that back-to-back situation unless one is paid double and really needs the money or job. However, it's just not healthy and you need that rest. Most of the times those who are doing double shifts would end up feeling moody, sleepy and can't produce quality service. If you don't have any choice and you still want to keep your job, is it possible if you can change shift with someone else from morning shift or at least make them see the logic. If it's a split shift then it's understandable, but do they provide you a nearby place to stay? Before you decide of not going, it is better for you to check if there is a mix up. If no, there must be something wrong with the management.

Yeah, it is illegal to schedule someone like that. We're supposed to have a minimum of 8 hours in between shifts. I think they realized their mistake because they started sending people home early who had to come in at 4. I just told them I couldn't come in at that time and I stayed for my regular late shift. I hate having to wake up super early for a lousy job that pays me minimum wage.

That is terrible that you have to work late one night and go in early the next day. Is there anyway possible you can switch shifts with one of your co-workers? I would bring it up to the other supervisor because that is really not fair. I would not sleep when you get home in fear that you may end up over sleeping and missing work completely. I wish you can call in sick.

I ended up telling one of the managers that I just couldn't do it. She was really nice about it and didn't even try to make me come in to work at a different time

Wow, that's a real bummer, courtknee525. In fact, I'm not sure, but I think that it's illegal to ask someone to come back to work in that short of a time. You may want to check on that.

Just tell them that you cannot come in. If you really want work, you will do what they asked for. However, I see that they are not paying you much. So why bother to work hard for them. Do not abuse your self for working long and yet you do not get any. But be kind to them. Just tell them that you cannot come.

That's exactly how I feel! I told them I couldn't come in for that. They ended up letting people leave early who had to come in early the next morning. I told them I would stay until closing but that I would not be able to come in the morning. The manager I talked to was understanding and didn't give me any problems. This isn't my career and I don't feel like killing myself over a minimum wage job lol

I think it is illegal. They can not force you work for so much hours in a day. If you take a job 8 day a hour, while only have a day to get up so early, maybe you can have a try. But you have to work more that 18 hours a day, it sould be done by two or three people. You can refuse to do that job, I think. As it is not your career, you need not spend your time on the meaningless require.

Well, if it is just for this week because of the sale,I say just stick it out. However if it is going to be an on going thing and you don't REALLY need the income, then perhaps you should look for new employment.

maybe i'll do the some thing as you, and look for another job than to work optimally with minimum cost. I think it's wrong thing, because the same thing what we have done so far to no avail. Or replace it with new work shift.
