I have seen a lot of theory on this one when I started watching the Legend of Korra.
Does he really want to just get rid of all benders so he can be the ONLY bender or is he really an equalist who wants everyone to be like him who can't bend?
On the season 1 finale it wasn't answered what really was his motive. It was only told by his brother, Tarlock.
He is a water bender with a special ability to bloodbend without the fullmoon. I hope this will be answered in the season 2.

I think he did all this because of his hatred for his father yakone. Yakone was a bender and look what he thought his sons ( Tarlock and Amon ) - killing people. Maybe Amon thought in order to prevent anymore people like yakone to exist, he needs to take every single benders bending power away. It's kinda sad though, cause I think he has good intentions... And the way he shed a tear when Tarlock blew up the boat...I think he knew about it but think he can't really go anywhere else anymore so he might just aswhile die...now I wonder who's gonna be the enemy in season 2...

Aw, darn it! I haven't seen the finale yet! I have to wait for it to come up on Nick.com because I don't have cable.
Oh well, spoilers away. This is why I don't spend much time talking about shows I'm behind on, cause someone's gonna say something...
Anyway, haven't seen the finale yet but I suspect that he's a bender because he just seems more interested in power than equality, and he has the ability to spirit-bend which I think has to come from a bender.
