Advertising - what is the point?

Australia

Back when I was growing up there was probably some point in advertising. Product recognition advertising led to, at least in Australia, advertising slogans that are still part of our social fabric. Millions of older Australians can still sing the Vegemite and Aeroplane jelly songs, and I bet the same applies everywhere in the capitalist world. How can you be sure there are no borers in the floor, white ants in the door, silverfish galore, get a Flick man, that's your answer, one flick and they're gone. Adverts used to be clever, fun, even informative on occasions, but that was in the days where the choice was between Persil or Rinso washing powders(both made by the same people), or IXL or Cottees jams and jellies, etc. But then Madison Avenue went viral, and suddenly there were 10 or 12 competing products, often all made by only 2 companies, with all the plethora of TV and newspaper adverts to keep you all in line, and it took me about one year of this before I permanently turned off the adverts in my perception. How many of us ever click on the pop-ups here, or on any other site for that matter, unless we ar specifically looking for what they are advertising? How many of us really care what product we get from the supermarket shelves as long as it does what we want? What's on special today, that'll do. Do you pay any attention at all to advertising? Lash
