A friend of mine was selected to be on a jury duty last week, and he did went to the court house to wait for the jury pick. Unfortunately, he doesn't speak much English, and he has limited ability to understand the case. So he explain the whole situation to the personnel there, and they dismiss him from such duty. So, I guess this jury selection must be classified whether people have the ability to understand the language or not. Otherwise, it might just a waste of time. I heard they pay around $25 per day for the parking fee and other expenses.

You have to be able to understand English to make a decision on the trial. A misunderstanding could ruin someone's life. It would be irresponsible and worse to accept a task if you didn't understand the language that was used for it. Jury duty is a very serious task.

I absolutely agree with you are saying, that is why they should select people carefully. People might be a citizen, but not all of them really understand the language.

That's true. Just being a citizen isn't enough.

binggaling, they know where you live. You have to have a good reason to not show up. If you don't show, they'll usually send you a letter and give you a different date, but you could go to jail. It's a requirement of citizenship.

you did not mention where it took place and why English was used in the court.

English would be used in any court that has English as its major language, like England or the United States. Just like Spanish is used in Spain and Chinese is used in China.

You do get paid for jury duty. Randy was supposed to serve, but because his mom was terminally ill he was able to be excused (his mom's health was really touch and go). I know of a person who purposely gets out of jury duty by pretendeing to be prejudice and racist. I am sorry that your friend was unable to serve.

The jury perhaps has a presumption that since someone is living in that particular place, he must be able to speak the language therein. On the other hand, it is a good decision for your friend not to accept the task as it might just mess up the whole process.

Yes, they want compatent people and I would never be picked. I have Colitis also am almost legally blind and partially deaf even my father with an artificial leg wouldn't be picked. My brother has been picked in the past and went for 4 days (lost that at work and all). He didn't pay the parking and all that but we are in a snall area but I would imagine if its a bigger area the costs.
