Recently, I've noticed that my 8 year old son is losing interest on his studies. He would lie about his homework, and sometimes would tell me that he left his book at school. A couple of months back, we allowed him to join a basketball clinic. We wanted him to do some physical activities. Since then, he became so enthusiastic with the game and played almost every afternoon. I don't him to focus on basketball and I don't want him to bad record at school because of the game. What should I do? How are we going to encourage him to study more?

Do not let him play the game anymore. It happened to my son last year when I allowed him to participate in soccer. His final grade for that term dropped. I had to cancel his soccer game. He was once again able to concentrate and the following terms his grade improved.

I think he has a problem at school and you have to talk to his teacher about it. He might not able to cope with the lessons at school because of the basketball and his teacher might have scolded him. Better yet, talk to your son, maybe he has a problem with the subjects or the teachers. Talk to him in a nice way and express your support to him. He should overcome this problem otherwise it will affect his education until college. Good luck.

i agree with the other two mylotters. YOU should talk to him. your son maybe needs your support. you should talk to him more often about education and ask if he's doing great or help him and encourage him about school matters. :)

Please relax, it is common for a 8 years old boy to having lost interest on his studies. Maybe we can't say losing interest, but he likes playing better. Little child needs time to play. Maybe you could play with him, study with him, remember, don't be angry with him. Little child needs our help and guide.
