The order of accountants is not reasonable

My boyfriend is an accountant, he going on 64 in September and this will be his last year to work. He is also semi-retired and makes very little money. The order of accountants is expecting him to take 60 hours of training for a total of 1,000 dollars which he doesn't have, he can hardly make it now. He called them up to tell him he was semi-retired and couldn't afford these courses, which he has taken all the way through. It is just a money maker for them. They told him so what he was still working. But he really cannot afford that money one year before he retires. He has been an accountant for 40 years! He knows what he is doing. So I told him to send a copy of his income tax to show what little money he has and to appeal, also to look for an ambudsman for the order of chartered accountants in Quebec to see if they can intervene. Any other suggestions?

Sadly, many jobs are like this without the training he may loose his job. A lady I use to work with (she got another job) had worked in insurance for years (40 some years), she was working at this insurance office and samething they wanted her to get the training, in the end she lost her job because of it and she was 64 as well. She's now working at Walmart and likes it less of a hassle.

I really don't know what to say here... I'm kind of shocked that he would need these courses when he is so close to retirement. He is licensed, right? A CPA or something? I didn't realize accountants would have to go get continuing education to keep their licenses. I was a nurse and I did have to take CE courses, but my license didn't depend on it... it was to advance in my position and get paid more. This is odd to me. I feel bad for Matt to have to do this... maybe he should just chuck it in and retire this year and be done with it... especially if he isn't making that much money anyway.

yes this is just a money grabbing bull crap scheme for them to make more money. I suggested he retire but he doesn't want to. He will not know what to do with himself if he retires, he has been working all his life.

Talk to a damn lawyer!! That sounds like an absolute racket! What's the big idea, them making him spend all this money for more training that he obviously does not need one year before he retires? Reminds me of when I was in highschool and they changed the uniform slightly, my last year there. No way in Hell was I going to spend all that money on special shirts, when I was going to leave the school the very next year! No way!

it is the rules of the professional order of chartered accountants that is why I told him to see if their is an ombudsman or if he can file an appeal.

I think that he should take your suggestion. After all, unless they raise the retirement age to seventy, or let him work after sixty-five, there is no way that he is going to benefit from taking extra courses unless of course he starts his own business and gets a lot of clientele. And with the economy the way it is, I doubt he will get much business anyway.

he has his own business. He is about to retire now. He could work as long as he likes but he is getting sicker and sicker and wants to retire next year. Plus he says he still needs the money he does make right now especially now that he has to pay for a caregiver for his mother.

he is on disability now until he is 65 and then he can retire to get the old age pension. Yes this is crap to have to take courses he doesn't need to work just one year. Ricki another commenter said the same thing happened to her friend at 64 and she lost her job. Matt could lose his license if he doesn't comply.
