Putting Gasoline in Diesel Engine

A couple of months ago, I went to fuel pump station to have my car's tank filled up. I told the attendant to fill it with diesel. He then started filling my tank. I gazed at my side mirror only to see that he was filling it with gasoline!! I immediately move out of my car told him stop and confronted him why he put gasoline when I specifically told him to put diesel. He told me that he "assumed" that my car had a gasoline engine (there's a gasoline and diesel version for my car). I was fuming mad when he told me this. I almost punch him actually, but decided to let it go since the manager told me that they will flush the gasoline out of the tank for free. Plus, they'll also give me a full tank free of charge probably to compensate all trouble they have caused me. I'm glad that was resolved. I wonder what could have happened if I failed to look at my side mirror, and my diesel car was running on gasoline? Have you guys here have a similar experience with mine? What happened? Did your engine stop or did something abnormal happen to your car? By the way, which is worse, to put gasoline in a diesel engine or to put diesel in a gasoline engine? I know both of them are a bad idea, but what I want to know is which of the two scenario could cause more damage to your car, if not "kill" it?

Hello usemyname It is a good thing you were so attentive to the attendant who obviously was not at all attentive to his task, as it could have been quite the costly and aggravating mistake. It is also good to hear that the manager of the fuel pump station was attentive to your worries and has offered to compensate you for all of your worries and trouble. Peace

You are wise to be a regular customer at a pumping station exactly for this kind of incident. I try to establish myself as a regular at places like this as well.

That is pretty messed up. People should realize to be careful with other's vehicles. I am sure it could case some serious damage.

Yes, they should, surverychick4. I mean, how would they feel if someone destroys something they really cared for by someone out of an honest mistake. Plus, they are payed do this. So they might as well do their job well.

In a small quantity nothing would have happened : many people in Europe are putting 5 to 10% of gasoline in diesel tanks in winter to avoid diesel to freeze. It was not really useful to flush out the tank if there was less than 30% of gasoline in it -- you would have probably heard a motor noise slightly different than usual --. You won a full tank for free. On the other side putting diesel in a gasoline tank causes serious troubles and needs to be completely cleaned : the car would not have done 1 km...

It wouldn't hurt flushing it out either since it's free. Exactly my thoughts since diesel engine are more sturdy compared to gasoline. I have heard of this petrol-diesel mix done by truckers during winter. Some people say that this practice could pose a risk to your engine. I think there's this engine fuel additive sold in hardware stores and auto shops that serves as an alternative for this one, if you don't want to risk mixing petrol and diesel yourself.
