My First Attempt At Making Fondant

So as I stated in a previous discussion I'd like to start making/decorating cakes to make a little extra money while I'm in school. So last week I tried making fondant for the first time. I used this recipe: ___________________________________________________ * 1 c light corn syrup * 1 c shortening (not butter flavored) * 1/2 tsp salt (sea salt is okay) * 1 tsp clear vanilla extract (regular will change the color) * 2 lbs confectioners’ sugar (sifted) Optional: * Gel food coloring if you plan on coloring your fondant (the gel that is made for coloring frosting-NOT the gel that is made for writing on cakes) How To Make Fondant: 1. In a large bowl, stir together the shortening, salt, vanilla and corn syrup. 2. Little by little, mix in the sifted confectioners’ sugar until it is a stiff dough. 3. Knead your dough by hand or you can use your kitchenaid or other strong stand mixer with a dough hook. If you find that your dough is still sticky, knead in more of the confectioners’ sugar but don’t get too carried away or you will end up with crumbly, dry fondant that is difficult to work with ____________________________________________________ The fondant turned out to taste as it should, it was good, but it was not the right texture. There was no way I would be able to roll it out and drape it nicely over a cake. Anyone have any tips? Thanks!

Hello LilyoftheThorns I have never attempted to make Fondant. Although your attempt may not have been as you had hoped, at least it tasted good! It would be nice to be able to master the making of Fondant as it would be fun to design different cakes with this method. I imagine that you will eventually perfect your Fondant making skils. Peace

Well if I can't get my fondant skills mastered, i can by premade fondant! Haha. So I can still decorate cakes if I want to. I just need to get customers before I make such an investment! I told my friend she has to let me do her wedding cake! Haha

She has said she would. She isn't engaged yet, but my friend and her boyfriend are moving along so it might not be too long now! Hopefully she really does let me, I'd just like to get a little practice with some smaller cakes that aren't so important! Haha

While I do enjoy making cakes and decorating them, I have never tried fondant. Thanks, maybe I will give it a try.
