Why do I see more and more sites avoiding the word "God"?

I first noticed it here on myLot, people replacing God with G-d. Then I started seeing it on other sites and yesterday I was doing research for an article and saw it on a site that sold Kiddush cups, a Jewish ceremonial cup. I even saw God's name altered in a news article online! Why is this? Is it some kind of new form of respect or are people afraid to spell out God's name? I'm in the dark so someone please explain to me why I keep seeing this. Thanks.
