There had been bones of elephants, yes elephants not ancient dinosaur sized mammoths, found in our country by archaeologist before. These elephants where said to be thriving before the Pre Spaniard occupation thousands of years ago and they did get to interact with our ancestors. we are one of the few Asian countries with no Elephants (yeah we have one in a zoo) Burma have Elephants, Thailand have Elephants, and Indonesia have elephants too. I heard there use to be a Chinese Elephant species but they got extinct because of their ivories. There are Elephants thriving in China but their species is Indian Elephant. Whatever happened to Philippine Elephants?

your post got me thinking captalbert! and yes you have a point on why our neighboring countries have elephants and we dont have. maybe our ancestors found them to large to work in a field and so used carabaos instead? I do hope this mystery can be answered by the scientists!

There are actually elephant bones found in our country which means before the Spanish came there are elephants here, Our ancestors killed them to extinction. a major extermination.

i wish we were able to see this in out time. but i guess it is not meant to be. i have no thoughts as to why they have been elminated, i did not think they were even hunted to be eaten. After all it was not even documented that they use elephants then? I mean we know of rituals, and of sorts but these weren't part of it...

I think I just remembered they were hunted for meat and ivory by our ancestors, You know Ivory is a priced Item. Our ancestors were trading with the Chinese and Indians during durign the pre-Spanish era. so I can expect a demand for Ivory.

Well look into the areas where there are elephants, they have large land area for them to roam around. In the case of Philippines, we do have limited areas, so my theory is that they were either over hunted to extinction or they undergone a natural extinction since the resources of our land was not sufficient for them to supply them with the needed food for them. I know elephants eat a lot so since there are humans to compete with I guess they were doomed to extinction.

countries smaller than us for some unknown reason still have elephants. yeah there is a possibility that our ancestors over hunted them. I did heard 10 years ago elephant bones are found in Palawan and Pangasinan. those places I think have decent vegetation. Poaching might be a reason. Elephants Unlike pigs only gives birth to 1 to 2 babies. I think archaeologist did found things made of ivory in our country. Its sad that we are one of the few ASEAN countries with no elephants. :(

You got a point there, Why did Philippines haven't their own elephant compared to other nearby countries. The last time I saw a real elephant is at the Manila Zoo which I heard from the news is currently sick and have the possibility to die. That is the only elephant in the said zoo. I just hope it will not die.

I think that elephant is from India or Sri Lanka, so Its not a Phillippine elephant, Its an Immigrant, so many elephant bones and Ivory found in our country. did our ancestors exterminate them? Is their meat so delicious that our ancestors over hunt them and eat them. I wish I have time machine and I get to save at least 4 of those elephants.
