Sharing A Bed With Your Dogs

Dogs Stealing My Bed - My dogs take over my bed at night!

So, all you dog owners out there...this is for you! I'm sure most of you know all about sharing the bed with your dogs. Well, I am no stranger to that. My sister thinks I'm crazy for letting my dogs rule the bed...but the way I figure it, it actually helps me fall asleep to have the dogs with me, so they can sleep wherever they want. I took a picture of my bed the other night, to show where my dogs were sleeping. Do you think I moved any of them? Nooo I did not! So where do you think I slept? Well, I slept with my head towards the right of the picture, and I was curled up in the fetal position so my legs didn't hang off the bed (I'm 5'9''). I slept in the space between the Chihuahua and the 2 black dogs. Not a whole lot of room! Does anyone else let their dogs rule their bed? Or am I really crazy like my sister thinks?

Penny and Ciara - They take over my son's bed.
Lol, your bed? I don't think so, looks like it belongs to them...I am sharing a picture of Penny and Ciara that was taken almost 2 years ago. As you can see, they think that my son's bed is theirs...I don't mind and I know that if anyone were to break in, my son will be safe..

Lol! Yeah, my dogs aren't too keen on strangers, even if we let them in the door. One of my dogs, Maggie (purple collar), always nips my brothers friend in the butt whenever he's leaving the house. Haha! He has been over multiple times, but she always goes after him! Sometimes she even nips my dad....she's an odd dog.

That is absolutely true! Dogs add so much security to your life! That's probably another unconsicous reason I love having my dogs sleep with me. Ain't no one uninvited getting into my room! haha

Hello LilyoftheThorns Before I was married to Mrs. Turner I used to let my dog(s) sleep with me. Usually it was just one dog, but on occasion it was two dogs. They were Scottish Terriers, therefore, relatively small dogs. Also, I had a large, king size bed. Now that I am with Mrs. Turner, I do not want anything to come between us, including my dog(s). Our Border Collie will often sit with us in the bed while we're watching television, or if she is scared of the thunder, or various other times, but fortunately for us, she prefers her own bed. We haven't yet had to kick her out of our bed as she seems to get disgusted with us and leaves on her own. Peace

Of course, she does become impatient in the mornings when she wants us out of 'her' bed as she likes to lounge in our bed most of the day. Yes, Scotties are incredibly cute and wonderfuly companions!

I have to agree with your sister. I am not a real big animal lover either, so maybe that is why. My bed is my bed, and there is no animal sleeping in it with me.

You are not crazy at all! All those who own a dog (or have owned dogs in the past) know what a pleasure is to share the bed with the family dogs. My dog sleeps in bed with me during the day (in case I take an afternoon nap) but she prefers her armchair for the night sleep. I suppose I snore or move too much, or else I don't know any other reason she doesn't like to sleep in bed. She stays there with me until I fall asleep but then she gets down and move to her place, in the armchair. Why do you think she doesn't like to sleep in bed with me?

I'm actually surprised at how many people have already posted that they do not allow the animals to sleep on the bed with them. I'm not saying they're wrong, or that I'm judging them for it...I was just surprised! Haha Well, since she stays with you until you fall asleep maybe she thinks it's her duty to "protect" you while you fall asleep. And once you do, maybe she feels her place isn't right next to you, and that she should have her own sleeping spot...?

I have a lovely new cat named Limboo. She is very cute and lovely to every one of us in the family. She has her own place for shelter as well as to live. We had given about five thousand more more rupees for the house of our Limboo and I just used to put here inside the cage during the night time. I don't allow her to used to get into the the bed. Well she makes them untidy

Oh my goodness no! You are just fine! I would miss it if my dogs were not in bed with me. I have a dog and 2 cats that sleep with me. I do, however, rule the bed, and I do move them out of the way when I am sleeping. It does not matter, they just mover over and Poof, go back to sleep again, LOL. I also loved to sleep with my pet rooster (yes you can get pet chicken diapers, lol) ... believe it or not, I miss sleeping with that rooster. Pet chickens are on the rise, and are called 'house hens'. It's great for kids who are allergic to dogs or cats. Because you can hug a chicken, but you cannot hug a canary. Great pets! So believe me, if I slept with a chicken, you are not strange at all for sleeping with a dog :D Take Care! Have fun!

Oh my gosh!!! Haha!!! Chicken diapers? That's a new one for me but sounds adorable!!!! How often do you have to check/change a chicken's diaper? SOMETIMES I'll make the dogs move if I want room to spread out, but even in those instances they still get half my bed lol.

Sweety, that's no problem, you just need a bigger bed. When she was younger, Lucy liked to sleep in my bed. At about 9pm I would tell her "Bedtime" and off she'd go then she would make room for me when it was my time to go to bed. Now she likes to sleep outside. Roxy and Benji like to sleep with me. Roxy sleeps at my feet or between the 2 pillows (I have a queen sized water bed), Benji sleeps at the side I'm facing to start...growls for me to scratch his tummy and ends up sleeping curled into my back. Sometimes, Banjo, the cat will join us too, lots of the time in winter. I love my little guys so much.

LOL, it's not squishy and wobbly like most water beds. They both had probably never been on a bed so it was a totally new experience and therefore no big deal. Benji could not even get on to our bed at first but now he can climb and jump up quite high. If he surprises himself and is scared when he turns around and looks down, he barks for me to come help him. It's not possible for them to damage it, there is lot's of stuff between us and the bladder and the bladder is quite thick.

I'm guessing by bladder you are referring to the part of the bed with the water in it?!?! Haha Awww, is Benji old? Or he just doesn't like the height sometimes?

I've never had a waterbed but aren't you worried the animal's nails would puncture it? Or is tha even possible? I'm not sure my dogs would get on a waterbed, I think it would scare them! Haha. And you're right, I DO need a bigger bed!!!! Haha

Oh, you're definitely crazy! j/k! My pup sleeps wherever she wants and with whoever she wants. Sometimes she will sleep with me, sometimes it's with my hubby, and sometimes she even sleeps with our oldest. However, it seems she prefers our youngest the best as she's almost always next to him. And although I'm a little jealous, I love it...especially when she peers out from under the covers. There's just something about it. It's so darn adorable. Happy mylotting!

Aww I bet your pup feels like she needs to protect your youngest the most! She probably senses that the kids are the most "vulnerable." Usually I only have the small one with me, the larger black lab mix prefers to sleep with my sister (and only sleeps with me when shes not here), and I've stopped letting the other black dog sleep with me every night because she always wakes me up early (around 4am) and I need to get better sleep for school! Sometimes I let her sleep with me on the weekends, but otherwise she's with my sister too.

Twins sharing bed - Sleeping time folks
My dogs have their own house and are never allowed inside our home so I can't really relate with those who have their dogs living inside their very own home and sleeping even with them or sharing bed with them. I have friends who allow their pets inside their room and share bed with them but me no I don't allow that. Anyway to each his own, whatever pleases you then go ahead and enjoy. As for me, the master bedroom is only for me and my husband and the other bedrooms are for my little ones.

Your children are very cute. Why aren't your dogs allowed in your home? Are they more for property protection then for companionship? That question wasn't meant as an insult to you, I'm really just curious.

As long as an animal is taken care of, with good shelter and food/water and companionship, then I'm happy. It def. sounds like your dogs are loved, and I'm sure since you treat them well they are happy to guard you and your home.

No I don't take that an insult dear. I would be happy to answer that question for you. Our dogs are basically watchdogs. So they are basically for property protection you are right. So their house is near the gate so they could see whoever comes near or if there are intruders. We love them though, and we consider them part of our family. Losing any one of them would grief us so we always make sure they are well fed and all their needs well provided. They are not however allowed inside our home because I can't tolerate seeing dog hairs on carpets or sofa or any place inside the house. It don't think that is hygienic. Dogs or any pets for that matter are treated very kindly at home but they are not to live or sleep in the same house where we do.

Well, I would not call you crazy, but it is certainly something that I would not do or allow. I could not handle the smell or the hair everywhere. I prefer to have a nice clean bed to sleep in, not a dog kennel. But each to their own! I put in place a rule when we got a dog that she was not allowed to go on the carpeted areas of our house, so this meant that by getting to a bed, she would have to go onto carpet to get there, so a bed would be a double no no. Nevertheless, she was caught on our bed a few times and got quite a yelling at. She always knew she was in the wrong and started running away before anything was even said. She was always trying to break the rules that one! We also caught her on the couch a few times in the mornings. She would break out of the laundry where her bedroom was and go and sleep on the couch!

My dogs often know when they did something wrong before they got punished too. Because right when they saw us (before we even so whatever they did) they would cringe and look sooo guilty! Stinkers! Haha It's like the pleasure is always better than the punishment! I know this isn't what you were saying, but my bed is clean and not to full of dog hair. I have a big comforter that is on top of "my" sheets, and that takes the full brunt of the "hair" attack. haha. Unless of course our dog Sam is in my room unsupervised, he likes to dig through the blankets, coil them all up and then lay down...he's weird!
• United States
6 Jul 12
Oh, well our dogs don't smell and they don't leave clumps of hair! So I understand why you wouldn't want your pup up there with you! I wouldn't want to have to try and fall asleep with a stinky dog! Haha

No, I was more thinking of how our bed would have been if our dog was all over it all the time. She always smelled bad to me and would leave large chunks of hair everywhere all the time. It was a never ending job sweeping and vacuuming all the time. The cats however I do not mind on the bed as they are usually fairly clean. Plus there is just no training them!

i don't allow dogs and cats sleep together with me. They can jump on it and play for short time only when they are really clean (after taking a bath), sleeping, no way...i really don't want to get much their hairs on my bed...

Hey ryanong, It seems that the bed is full of it's hairs when it lie on my bed. I feels very it is very uncomfortable to sleep in a bed with lot's of such hairs and I tend sneeze a lot of times and it takes a lot of hours to fall in sleep.

Exactly Thewonderboy..., i feel my bed is dirty when it is full of dog/cat hairs...i may wash it in the next morning. Currently my mother cat always runs into my room, she won't jump on my bed but i can see her hairs are everywhere even though i do clean my room 1 time/2days..i really don't like it.. Better we don't allow cat/dog jump/sleep on our bed...

haha what a cute picture, theres no room for you! i would just buy another bed let them have one to themselves, that is if theyd want to sleep without you ,they may just go over to your bed. i have a small dog, and she isnt tall enough to jump on my bed so i dont have any problem with her trying to sleep with me. though she would if she could as i found out when my mattress was on the floor i woke up being spooned by this 8 pound puppy. i have never picked her up to put her on the bed either. i am very particular about my bed also and wouldnt like the smell. thought my family dog has always slept in my moms bed, sometimes under it and i thought it was quite adorable he usually ends up with his head on the pillow just like mom. i think if i had a bigger dog id occasionally let him sleep at the end maybe with a blanket overtop of the comforter. sweet dreams!! :)

My little foster dog likes to sleep under the covers, I think it makes her feel safe. But multiple people now have mentioned that they don't want their beds to smell, and that's why they don't allow dogs on the bed. But that suprises me because I don't have any kind of smell on my bed from the dogs. They don't smell either, and they are perfectly clean. What kind of stinky doggies are you guys getting!? Haha! And I guess I should mention my bed doesn't look like that photo every night. The big black dog usually sleeps with my sister, and if my sister isn't home he usually sleeps with my mom. Rarely does he sleep with me. Usually it's JUST my little foster dog with me, and on more occassions it's foster pup and the other black dog, Maggie with me. Thanks for sharing!

hahahaha that's really cute! I also used to sleep with 3 dogs when I was still single. It's just sad that I have to leave them with my mom when I already got married. It's very comforting to sleep beside them, especially when they get cold during midnight, and when you wake up you realized they're already stuck in your underarms! lol. Oh, I missed them when I saw your photo...

You had to give all three of your dogs to your mom when you got married!? How come?? My dogs actually don't sleep on pillows (except for my little foster dog, but I have 2 pillows so when she has one I just get the other haha). But the big dogs prefer just the bed.

My husband and I are both working. There's nobody who can attend to them while we are away. But it's good to see them with my mom. They make her happy. :) I get to see them when I visit my mom. And it's nice to feel that they are still excited to see you back. :) especially my little Matoy. she will instantly jump over and sit on my lap.

That's funny...I sleep with three dogs as well. Our minipinscher does all he can to get under my covers. My other dog, winter ( I think she's a Japanese Spitz but mixed with another unknown breed. Another dog of ours is a Shih-poo or a Terrier mix. It's quite crowded because my sister and I sleep in the same bed as well but we love it. Our dogs, are always inside the house and they only go out to pee and poop and they're very clean. I think if your dogs are clean you don't have to worry about anything...except the space to sleep in in your case! :)

My dogs are like yours, they are potty trained and they are clean. The little one in my picture likes to sleep under the covers too, pressed right up against my leg or my stomach. Instead of a security blanket it's a security dog! Haha

Haha...our little dog wants to be cuddled and hug under the covers too. It's nice to know a lot of people are taking good care of their dogs as well. They do add that little touch in making sleep comfortable I believe. (Though I know some won't agree)

My 2 dogs rule the bed and they are smaller dogs. One sleeps in the middle of my and my hubby and the other one lays on top of one of our pillows. usually ends up being on top of our heads in the middle of the night. If they don't have enough room they will let you know by stretching and pushing you away with their legs it is hilarious but I wouldn't have it any other way. i love having them in bed with me

One of our cats would sometimes sleep across my moms head haha. And when I first rescued my cat she would sleep with her body streteched over my neck. Now I've got my little foster dog sleeping with me every night; she likes to be underneath the covers, pressed right up against me. I think having an animal with me really does help me sleep better!

My dog doesn't rule my bed but she does sleep with us every night! I like her there, she is like one of our kids. She is a BIG dog so sometimes we have to push her over and things but she is such a good girl. When my husband is not home at night I love her next to me, I feel safe and protected. =)

If your dog is housetrained then you have nothing to worry about. All our dogs are housetrained I have never had one go to the bathroom on my bed. The only dog who ever has accidents in the house is our Old Golden Retreiver, and that's only at night when no one is awake to let her outside. And she can't climb the stairs so she can't even get to the bedrooms. We don't have to worry about accidents in our rooms or on our beds.

My dog has the freedom to roam around the house and my bed is very low so occasionally she will decide to lie on the bed. The rottweiler tended to be the thing that got me out of bed, by jumping all over me. But they never ruled my bed, if they took my space I will gladly push them out the way. Unfortunately my dog decided to start licking my pillows which is fairly unpleasant.

I personally do not like sharing my bed with dogs. Do not get me wrong, dogs are really cute and furry but they tend to stink a bit. I do not want my bed to have that dog smell so I prefer dogs to sleep in their own bed or on the floor. But I have many friends who sleep with their dogs. Sleeping with your dogs is perfectly normal. I just prefer otherwise. Happy mylotting.

My dogs don't stink Hehe! It's all about hygiene, just like people! I don't know what experience you have with dogs, are your dogs really fluffy? All our dogs are short haired, so maybe that's why they don't stink? Either way! You aren't the first person here that said they keep the dogs off their bed for this reason! Haha
