A haircut for an Afghan Hound ?!

This is a guy in my town that owns an Afghan Hound. It is not a common breed and it is one of my favorites so it is impossible for me not to notice the spectacular beauty of such dog. I've been watching this Afghan Hound for more than two years - she's about my dog's age and what baffles me is she is always shorthaired! I can't understand this! I mean, if the dog is from a breed that is to be trimmed, I understand a haircut but, for a dog who's most important quality is the beauty of its coat, what's the point of shortening its hair? If the owner doesn't want to brush a dog and still want a sighthound, why didn't he get a Greyhound? Or, considering that there are small chances for a pet sighthound to be used for the purpose the breed was created, why didn't he get any other short haired dog? I think one of these days I'll ask the guy. What do you think? Do you find an Afghan Hound haircut normal? Do you give your dogs a haircut? What are your reasons?

it's probably just a lot easier to maintain. Think of all the brushing and upkeep an Afghan hound with a full coat would need. I'm sure a lot of the times their kept trimmed up and we only see the really long haired ones that are from dog shows or belong to a breeder. Maybe he keeps it cut because the dog gets too hot? Or maybe it has some sort of skin condition or something. Maybe ask the guy one day if you're really curious. If you end up asking, let us know what he says!

I saw it with the same puppy haircut even in winter. So it has nothing to do with the hot weather. A skin condition could be a reasonable motive to keep her trimmed all year long. I can't accept an explanation like "it is easier to maintain". Why didn't he get a short haired dog if he finds difficult to maintain a long haired dog?

Maybe he really likes the breed but he didn't want to deal with all that hair but still wanted that kind of dog. If you really want to know, just go up and ask him.

You know I will! The only thing that has stopped me to do that is his dog is aggressive toward other dogs. I can't come close to them when I'm with my dog. I must meet them while I am alone or else we'd have a dog fight.

That's right my friend, it can really wondered why instead of cutting the normal long hair of the dog why have a natural short-haired dog? Well, we never know, perhaps they have problem with the dog skin or maybe some members of the family has an allergy on dog's hair and it was already too late to notice that there were some of them has dog's hair allergy. I don't have long-haired dogs ever since because I couldn't hardly imagine the dog's falling hair.... Nice day ahead.. Mobhomeir here 070612 0832hrs

A person either has an allergy to dog's hair and can't live with a dog in his proximity, or he doesn't have an allergy. People with such allergy can't live with a dog, no matter if the dog is long haired or short haired. So this is not a possible explanation. I can accept the explanation with a problem with the dog's skin problem. I hope I'll find the answer right from the owner of the Afghan Hound.

I take it he does this all year round? Because I have Ciara shaved and this year I am especially glad I did as temps have been in the triple digits and she would have been miserable. But during the winter months I allow her fur to grow out.. My neighbor also had her long hair dog shaved down for the first time and not only is she cooler, but I don't think thunder frightens her as much as it use to.

I agree with you. I can't stand people who buy dogs from long haired breeds and they keep them always short-haired. They give their dogs the most pitiful haircuts. The other day I saw a Shih Tzu with such an ugly haircut! He didn't look like a Shih Tzu any more. He rather looked like a rat.

Oh, but with the small breeds it is something more common. Small breed dogs with long hair are very common (at least in my country). I'm talking about Bishons, Shih Tzus, Yorkies. They can be often seen with an ugly haircut. But with an Afghan Hound it isn't a common view. Have you seen an Afghan Hound haircut?
