It is so hot, what to eat?

I don't know about you all, but it has been so hot here for the past couple of weeks that I don't want to eat and I definitely don't want to cook because it just heats the house up more than it has already been. So, this got me to thinking, is there any ideas that other mylot members can suggest about things that are tasty to eat when it is so hot outside that you really don't feel like eating at all? The only two things that I can think of are cold cut sandwiches and also salads.

dorannmwin: Yes. It is hot nowadays. But we cannot avoid cooking. We have to cook and eat what we like. also take fruits like watermelon, apple etc. If fruit juices suits one can drink a lot. Also drink a lot of water. If water consumption is less then it may cause a lot of strain and result in tiredness.

Drinking plenty of water is definitely something that is really important to do when it is this hot outside. There are times that I don't like to drink water at all, but with the heat being the way that it has been, I've been craving water and a lot of it.

visavis: thanks for your response. During hot days it is necessary for us to drink more water or fruit juice or butter milk so that we keep running.

Hi dorannmwin! I'm going to try to make salads too - but I'm aiming for more of a variety . . . I remember my mom used to make the same salad with the same dressings all the time and we got tired of it. I make this salad with greens, cooked up chicken (or pork), green onions, mango and avocado - with a French dressing (I copied it from some Korean restaurant we got it from). Last night we had a salad from a mom and pop pizza place - simple but tasty - all it had was iceberg lettuce, bell peppers, mushrooms, black olives, onions, pepperconi, tomatoes and thickly grated mozzarella cheese - with what tastes like homemade Italian dressing . . . anyway I think I can recreate that at home. We also make do a taco salad . . . with shredded iceberg lettuce, chopped tomatoes, green and red onions, cheese, cooked meat with taco seasoning (I like home seasoning best - not the premix), and a can of either refried or black beans - oh and salsa, chips and guacamole too! This isn't for everyone, but we also eat Japanese cold noodles (thinner than angel hair) dipped in a soy sauce type broth . . . these noodles are called somen. We put in green onions, shreds of dried seaweed, and sometimes grated fishcakes. And we eat it edamame, those green soy bean pods. And when I truly don't want to cook . . . we eat out - ha ha. But you know there's only so much of that we can do!

The noodles that you are talking about sound like they would be something that would be yummy to eat. Last night we resorted to going to eat at an oriental buffet for dinner and I will tell you that the thing that really hit the spot for me was a plate full of California rolls. They were so tasty and they sit light on the stomach too.

Not having any kind of oriental background, I always thought that eating anything that resembled something that had raw materials in it was strange. However, a couple years ago my sister had some at her house and encouraged me to try them. From that moment, I've been hooked on them.

When I was growing up, California rolls were so weird to me - as it was for my parents (avocado in a rice roll was such a strange concept). But now I enjoy eating them and you're right that do sit light on the stomach. In fact, you remind me I actually have part of the ingredients to make them myself at home (I had plans to make them, but never did). That would be another cool thing to make on a hot day . . . it shouldn't be difficult once you have all the ingredients. My hubby and my son would love it - though I don't know if my daughter would - ha ha. I'll make her the somen on the side - ha ha!

We have had taco's 2 times and made enough that the days after we just had taco salad. It was a hit both times. I also made some wraps and cut them into small snack size bites. I used cream cheese, ham or roast beef, or turkey, a real thin slice of cheese, thin tomatoes and lettuce. cut them into bite size pieces and cut up some fresh fruit. I put the wrap pieces on a plate in the refrigerator and had the bowl of fruit there. They snacked on them all day.

The idea of the bit sized wraps sounds like something that would be really tasty and ideal for weather like we've been having lately. The reason that I say that is because of the fact that it has definitely been too hot to eat a complete meal all at one time.

maybe someone will feel like cooking outside on a grill or something. we was going to have hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill on the 4th and wouldnt you know, our propane had run out! so we ended up having to heat up the house cooking them on the stove.

We got a new tank of propane at the beginning of the summer and we have been cooking outside a lot more than we have done in the past few years. I really don't think that there is anything that can't be cooked outside when it is just too hot to cook inside the house.

Oh my goodness, I can't even begin to imagine how horrible it would be if our air conditioner wasn't working. In fact, it was over 90 degrees still today at 9:30 when my mother, sister and I got out of the movie. It was just oppressive. It looks like it is going to cool off some next week, but honestly, that is only a relative term.

During hot weather I usually eat fresh fruits and vegetables, sometimes I make may own fresh fruit shakes. Also i cooked pasta with meatballs served with ice cold fresh juice and a cold dessert. Now in our country its rainy season yet there are times that too hot to instead of eating and cooking inside the house we preferred to eat to the nearest food court to refresh.

There have been a lot of days in the past week or so that have really been too hot to even think about preparing something at home and we have resorted to eating out more than we would ordinarily do.

Yes, they are especially good when they are juicy. Unfortunately, the one that we had last night was not the best watermelon that I've had this summer.

My menu for today was actually really screwed up because my mother and sister decided to take me to the movies and I was going to eat popcorn because I love popcorn, but wouldn't you know that the theater's popcorn machine broke between the time that I ordered my popcorn and being served popcorn. So, I ended up eating a fruit and yogurt parfait from McDonalds for dinner and now that it has cooled off some, I am munching on some watermelon that we have at our house.

Salads of all sorts and paradoxically, hot tea! In some very hot countries they eat spicy hot foods and don't suffer any ill efects. However, if your heat is a wet, humid one then you must make sure that you keep your fluids up and take a little salt, but not too much. Fruits, seafood and smaller portions all help. Prepare a large chicken salad in the evening when it is a little cooler ready for tomorrow. You can also cook finger food on the same basis. Boil eggs, fry chicken or make pulled pork. I am not sure about cold BBQ foods, but you can have potato salad, cous cous or rice salds etc etc. I hope that you can get comfy soon. Here in the UK it has peaked at about 60 degrees - a real scorcher. LOL!

Oh, I definitely haven't really been able to get comfortable for some time now because of the heat. We've been doing a lot of salads and BLT sandwiches (one of my favorites). In addition, I've also been trying to make sure that my husband has been drinking some gatorade because he works in a really hot environment and even though he says he feels like a camel, he has been getting dehydrated.

Gazpacho, fruit salad, chicken or tofu salad served in a cantaloupe, deli salads served in bread bowls... Those are a few good hot weather options if you really don't want to cook. However, you can still cook. It's just a matter of preparing things that don't have a long cooking time--preferably before the heat of the day. Having the stove on for 15-20 minutes to cook something won't heat up the house too much. If it's something that is good cold as leftovers, that is all the better.

Now that you've mentioned it, some really good chicken salad with walnuts and grapes in it sounds really yummy. Another thing that we've been eating a lot of lately is BLT sandwiches because we all love tomatoes around here and the bacon has salt in it that helps us keep our electrolytes balanced during the heat.

According to natural doctors it is better to eat aa little bit hot foods rather than cold ones during the summer season. Why? cold foods tends to make the arteries brittle and could lead to some complications. eating hot foods or warm ones can hel dilate the veins and arteries making it more flexible. furthermore, taking warm water will help you keep hydrated more rather than taking a cold water. In admit, sometime I did not follow that. It is still better to drink some cold beverages. hehehe. try to make some smoothies as my suggestion.

I have heard people say in the past to drink warm water instead of cold water, but that is just not something that I would ever be able to bring myself to do because I find that when drinking warm water I tend to have more gas than I typically do.

We have been drinking a lot more water than we typically drink and we've had more fresh fruit in the house as well. But I haven't bought any ice cream because even though it is good for cooling you off, it also tends to sit heavily on the stomach.

The heat makes me not want to eat either. If I'm indoors all day then I'll be fine to eat, but if I'm outside then I definitely won't want to eat. I can't really think of much besides salads and maybe making sub sandwiches and having chips. Maybe every once in a while cook up chicken or bbq something and then have something cold as a side like potato salads, pasta salads, fruits, salads, etc. It's hard to come up with things to eat when it's hot. Or you can make dinner once the sun goes down and it's a bit cooler, then maybe you'd feel like eating other foods.

We have been eating later at night which a lot of people think is strange, but when it is so hot outside, there is no way that I am able to eat until it starts to cool down. For example, right now it is a quarter to midnight and it is still 86 degrees outside. It was a real scorcher today.

I am feeling the same way. It is SO hot, I do not want to eat. I have to force myself to eat and it has to be the lighter foods. The only things I can think of is what you mentioned sandwiches and salads. I hate when I have to force myself because then I don't enjoy what I am eating as much. I am not even hungry, my husband the past few days has been like did you eat today? It's crazy but I don't want anything and I actually have to be reminded to eat right now!

I am basically having to force myself to eat as well. Throughout this heat that we've been going through during the last few weeks, I've been lucky to eat one time a day. And for my husband it is even worse because though he does work in a building, the building doesn't have air conditioning so it is hotter inside even than what we are facing outside.

Oh yes, it has been really bad this week and this week coming isn't going to be much better either. I don't really feel like eating either which isn't good for me I know since I need to feed the little baby growing. Mostly been eating cold fruits and salads since that is nice and cool and I found out early this week I got a sinuses infection so cold things feel really good on my throat.

I believe that Tom might have a sinus infection right now as well and I feel so terrible for him. You know what I did have earlier in the week that was really tasty and really soothing was melon pop sicles from Kroger. They are watermelon, honeydew and cantalope flavored and they are so tasty. I could sit there and eat the entire box of twelve of them at one time.

Another thing that I have found that works really well with sinus infections is to make sure and keep your sinuses flushed out. Using plenty of nasal spray when you are suffering from a sinus infection will help them to clear up more quickly and it also isn't using medication so it is safe when you are pregnant.

Water melon and grapes. I went to Kroger over the weekend and they didn't have any good strawberries because if they where good I would have gotten some chocolate to dip the strawberries in. Instead I went with the grapes the water melons where huge. My husband got a cantaloupe to share with our daughter. I have having a sinuses infection I was taking some sudeiafed that the UTC doctor said was okay to take while pregnant but it makes me so tired I had to stop taking them so instead just taking the antibiotics that they gave me. Like the Jamba juice smoothies. Pomegranate, strawberries and bananas is really good had one a few weeks a go and then last weekend I tried Mango, strawberries, pineapples, and oranges.

When i don't feel like eating I'll make a smoothie or juice. You can always make cold foods - like cold soup - or cook in a crock pot.

You could make various soups (vegetable barley for example), BBQ pork for sandwiches, A whole chicken (shred for salad or sandwiches, use in lettuce wraps, or serve with a side salad), do you have a foreman (electric) grill? You can use that to cook too. Even if you just make grilled cheese and tomato soup.

Cooking in the crockpot is something that could easily be done when it is hot like this. However, the thing about it that I'm not quite sure about is that most of the things that I make in the crockpot are heavier, so while they would not heat the house up, it is something that I still really don't feel like eating because it is something that is heavy on the stomach.

For dinner tonight I made a salad but I put a twist on it... I threw some pre-cooked microwave bacon, pre-cooked shrimp and rice in a pan and warmed it all through until the bacon was crispy then tossed it on top of a spring mix and grape tomatoes with nothing but salt and pepper. It wasn't necessarily the healthiest meal because of the bacon but it sure did taste good. And I think it balanced out because I didn't use any dressing. The only thing I wish I would have had for it was Feta cheese.

It wasn't as hot today as it has been for the last couple of weeks, but it is still warm outside so I really don't feel like having a heavy meal still. We ended up having BLT sandwiches and fried green tomatoes, not the healthiest thing in the world, but it certainly did taste good.

hi dear dorannmwin, I am using the microwave much more in summertime now cause it wont heat the kitchen up at all. My husband bought the micro long before he even knew me and as men are sometimes, he threw the user manual away. So its hit and miss for me now. LOL I got me a couple of microwave cookbooks and try to experiment more now and do more than only heat up convenience stuff in there.

That is one thing that is true for me. I do have some cookware that is made to go with the microwave so it is possible for me to be able to cook from scratch in the microwave. It isn't something that I do all the time, but it is an option that I am able to do from time to time when the fancy strikes me.
