Turn the television on but not watching

I have noticed that my in-laws especially my sister-in-law would turn all the lights, the TV, the fan and the radio on before going to the bathroom to take a bath. She would spent an hour inside and I could always hear her singing out loud but not the song being played in the radio. She practically sings all the time she spent inside the bathroom. I understand why she has to turn the radio on but the TV, I am still wondering why until now. She also does the same thing before going to sleep after arriving from her shift in the morning. Honestly, I find her habit so inconsiderate. Good thing that my husband usually return home by afternoon and would be the one to turn off everything.
Do you or know someone with the same habit?

I do turn on the TV sometimes and not even bother to watch it. I do this when I am alone to keep me company. However, I do not get why your sister-in -law has to turn on both the TV and the radio. If she wants a background noise to keep her company, she could just turn on the radio.
I also don't get why she has to turn on the fan if she would be in the bathroom. Basically she is just wasting the electricity.

Thank you for your response. Yes I understand why some people has to turn on the TV while they are alone. But I really hope that they use the Sleep option before falling into deep sleep. Just to show consideration to the person who pays for everything. I also do not know but I guess it has become her habit to turn everything on without using it. Too bad for a habit. Imagine my frustration every time I arrived that nobody is home but all the lights are on. I do not know if they do for safety precautions or something. It is really hard to understand.

Sadly, no. We pay for everything. When my husband told her once to at least conserve electricity, that was the time she and her mother got really angry and told us that if we want to conserve, we should not include them and they would pay for their consumptions. But none of those happened. I also hoping that they would really share but so far, they aren't.

She is not the one paying the bills? I was thinking maybe at least she shares on the payment of the electric bills.

My aunt and uncle do the same thing and I hope one day that they will realize that they will be able to save a ton of money if they are just a little bit more energy conservative. They will turn on all of the lights and the TV in one room, and then go to the living room leaving everything running in the other room. It really annoys me, even though I am not paying the bills so I will just have to let it happen until they notice that they are wasting their own money. Its whatever! I will be smart when I own a home!

Thank you for sharing dellessimon45. I really believe that they could really save money if they used electricity properly and definitely all of us should know how to conserve energy. I know that it is hard for us to tell others about their bad habit because they might think the other way and might get offended. I also find my sister in law's habit a bit annoying especially when the electricity bills arrived. My husband and I really want to save money but they really aren't helping us.
Thanks for your response verolop29. When I married my husband, I sometimes think that I did not get married but adopted a child. He also does something that would really irritate me like leaving chocolate wrappers in the sofa and bed. I also told him many times but he never listen. I guess it would be hard for them to change since they have already had that kind of habit ever since.

My adult kids will go through the house and turn on every light, but never turn them off. They just go right out the door and leave or up to their room. I have started telling them that if they don't turn them off, they are going to start paying the electric bill.

Thank you for sharing. I like how you handle the situation thoroughrob. That way your kids would realized that we are paying for that and they should show consideration and a sense of responsibility for their actions.

it is such a wadte... What your sis in law does. I have never known someone who is like that. I often would come home without anythong on and if i eed not watch the tv i would not even turn i on. I just do my business... Laptop and stuffs and not wadte on opening the radio when i could play it on my laptop. I hatr wastages and we are always ike that here at home. I admit to someties having a music while i take a bath and i bring my phone wth me haha but not the radio because i know i wont be able to hear about it from the insife of the bathroom.
my older brother though was sometimes always forgetting to turn off the electric fan when he uses it and then would leave. Good thing my mom always checks after him. Haha but my mom makes sure he remembersthis incident by talkingabout it over and over... But my broter always forgets anyway... So id say it is reall a bad habit.

I also bring my cellphone with me when I am doing the laundry so I could play music. Apart from it, I do not use other stuff I even do not use lights because I do the laundry on Saturday morning. I do not bother myself to watch TV while doing the laundry like what they used to do. You are right that like your brother, maybe this has become a habit for my sister in law. Sadly, I would say that it is an expensive habit and to our expense.
Thank you for sharing.

Hi Peper_Doll, it's nice to have someone telling her to understand her inconsiderate habit.
may be she doesn't know it's a waste of electricity to get all those appliances switched on for an hour earlier, if she really wants to watch tv under the fan. I just couldn't understand the real reason she does the same thing before going to sleep after her night shift in the morning. Might be doing so she then can set her heart at rest so that she can bathe and sleep with relaxed. With all the light on and noise made seem like she is not alone I suppose.
My husband's elder sister having the similar bad habit too. Hers is not as serious as your in law's. She switches on both the radio and tv at the same time. I don't believe one can listen to two two different broadcasting stations at the same time. Worse still she tends to turn the volume high. It's really a serious disturbance if we are in the sitting room
Fortunate that the two appliances are placed in her bedroom. My husband will get her door shut most of the time
Happy posting.

I guess there are really people who behave like that. Good for them that we are able to cope if not really understand their habits but not all people would do. I remember when I was still in a boarding house near my school. One of our board mates has the habit of turning the radio volume high. I would always hear other boarders knocking on our walls but she would really do not mind them until one of them confronted her. She explained that she can concentrate more with her studies with those loud noise which irritates most of us. I guess she forgot to consider that not all people are like her and usually, most would be opposite of her. A little consideration should always be there especially she is no longer in her own home and she is living with her fellow students.

What participation do they have in paying the electric bill. Maybe they don't even give a share. But you know what they are not alone. I've seen lots of people who do the same and I've almost grown tired of reminding those people around me who do the same. How could they waste electricity that way? How could they not understand that energy is not to be wasted. Don't they know how hard it is to earn money nowadays?

Thank you and you are right salonga, they are not giving a share so they are not aware how hard it is every time I see the electricity bill increase every month. Same thing goes in terms of water bills. They usually wash their clothes everyday SEPARATELY. Currently, there are seven of them. Imagine my disappointment every month the fact that we are trying our best to conserve energy and save money. My husband once tried of informing them to save electricity but her sister and mother have gone wild that time. I really do not want that to happen again so I just let them do what they want. What I do is leave the bill statements on top of the sofa sometimes hoping they would realize how much we are paying for it. But I do not think they are paying attention to that either. This thing has been bothering me for more than half a year already.

I have the habit of falling asleep with the TV on. I can't sleep if the room is totally quiet. My hubby works late so usually when he gets home and is ready to fall asleep he turns it off

That maybe my sister in law's reason as well why she turns of everything and would fall asleep after. Thank your for sharing.
