Are you allowed to open your Facebook account at work?

Whatta privilege if you are. I heard that most companies don't allow web browsing in the workplace. Some not even around the vicinity.
I always have my FB page on even if I am working. Advantage of working from home. hihi
If you were an owner of a company, would NO FB while at work be one of your policies?

At my old workplace they completely banned it. The bosses used to be able to have that priveledge but the workers never did but they got banned too because they wre never doing their jobs and always on Facebook. I think it's quite sad and pathetic really. They have nothing better to do with themselves but be in Facebook the entire day. So it's good that it is banned there otherwise no work would get done and they would be getting paid for nothing!

It's sad when people are given certain privileges and become abusive. Everyone must learn discipline.

:( Some people just wanna hide behind whatever leisure they can afford just to maintain a positive disposition. FB could be their way to vent out or forget about their problems...

Personally, it would really depend on the situation. Most of the time it would not be a problem unless you have someone who is spending more time online instead of working. Personally so many businesses anymore use Facebook now for promoting their business but I guess it just depends on what you are doing when.

True! There are companies that even sign up for an account so they have a profile they can use to promote their business. Surely, they won't forbid their employees to use it during work hours.

Yes we are allowed but not really. I mean we have the freedom and are not given rules on this matter. But we have to learn not to abuse. We have to be thankful that the Management gives us some freedom on this matter but if we abuse surely this freedom will be lost. So we have to be moderate in exercising this freedom.

hmmm...it's good to know that there are still companies allowing the use of FB. Everyone must be careful not to let the privilege go.

In our main office, social media sites were already blocked and prohibited by the IT as instructed by the management, however, here in our plant, accessing facebook and other social media sites are allowed. But there is a time that it was also blocked and prohibited.
You are right that having access with facebook and other social media sites are lucky enough compared to those who are restricted about it.

There's a certain time in a day it's blocked, is that what you mean?

Nope. in our mian office it was totally blocked the whole day and I think it is forever blocked. However, in my location, it is allowed all the time.

Hello sharksfin, I have heard that so many popular companies have blocked social networking sites and it will not allow the workers to log in there. But they all allow to browse the internet. I don't know why it is so
!

really? they allow online browsing but not FB...as if, they can stop people from viewing it. Unless, they really blocked the site itself.

I work from home too and I can open my FB anytime I want.
Though lately because I have been very busy with a lot of stuff from work, I would opt to not open it so I won't be able to encounter chat requests popping up.
My company's headquarters is in Malaysia and I've worked there for 2 years back in 2007. We were still allowed to open Facebook, even YouTube sites but was warned to view YouTube in moderation as loading videos would sometimes slow our internet connection.
If I were an owner of a company, I wouldn't be so strict in enforcing No Facebook During Working Hours Policy, just that I would warn everyone to do it in moderation. Of course I could say that based on my own experience in my present company - the management is lenient when it comes to browsing other sites. It's because the nature of our work involves a lot of getting information online and also interacting with customers online via chat messengers. Prior to working for a company in Malaysia, I worked as a call centre agent talking to Hispanic clients. I understand why in a call centre environment Facebook and other social networking sites would be banned during work hours, because incoming calls needed to be attended to promptly.

Facebook is not banned here so we can freely browse anytime. However, of course it should be self regulation since the company is allowing as to freely browse any site we want to. I open mine during lunch break or coffee break only, hehe. Wow, I want to work at home too. Care to share some tips? Thanks in advance.

That's insightful. Self-regulation is the word. Some companies used to be lenient when it comes to web browsing only many employees abused. tsk tsk
I wish I can give you tips. This is only an opportunity presented to me few years ago. But, you can try oDesk (maybe you've already heard of it...pretty popular).

When I was working last year we were allowed to be on Facebook if the place was very slow. The boss did not care as long as the work was done first. I didn't go on facebook at work though, I came here instead if it was slow...

In our regional office, facebook is blocked by the admin until 4pm. So my office mates could only use fb from that time. But in our field offices, we can open fb anytime.

So, everyone has the chance to check what's happening to friends, family and relatives. Others have an outlet to rant. hahaha
