Has anyone here been a part of a fandom?

I recently joined a fandom on Twitter, a very young fandom of teenagers ranging 14-22 yrs old (i should say) and comes from all over the world. Yes, it is a fandom of One Direction (and yes, i am a fan too). I am online on twitter like 8 hours a day and it amuses me so much because some of these people are actually online most of the time too. Most of them actually tweets about their social life being constricted to the internet. I was amazed when one time one of the boys from 1D said that he might do a twitcam that day and the fandom literally went haywire and those who are on the other timezones stayed up all night for the twitcam. When the twitcam came on 70,000 people viewed it, i thought twitter might explode with all their tweets (and some fans are flooding the timeline).
Its no wonder how 1D became sensations even before they had a show in another country. Twitter and other social media is playing a major role in their marketing. If twitter was invented during the time of the Beatles, i just can't imagine. They could have been unsurpassable. Just a note: One Direction is the 1st UK artist whose debut album debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Chart.
