Why I want a great big dog...

Hello, so I love dogs, but only one will do for me. The Irish Wolfhound. This dog is the largest on earth. The reason I want this dog, is because I plan on one day doing a hike across the Americas. I need a dog that is friendly, but big enough to make weirdos think twice before trying to mess with me. Our family had many dogs. My childhood memories were with our family dog, popcorn. Funny name but it is true. My mother was making popcorn one day, and the puppy she just brought home had no name yet. As she was making her snack, the puppy jumped on her leg, and made her spill it everywhere. She yelled out, "D*** it popcorn!" I have always loved animals that were larger than the "normal" size. Clydesdale draft horses are also my favorites. I just have a love for BIG animals. It started when I was young and with my mother. There was a team of draft horses near our home, and we would see them and feed them every day. Our neighbor would use them to haul his hay around and also for other things when the snow came. I thought at one time to have a zoo for only the largest animals on earth. I told my brother that, and he thought it was a great venture. I still would love to start one. It would just be so much fun. In reality, I love dogs more than any other animal. They are just wonderful to have. What breed of dog do you like, and why?

Funny how your dog got its name then. As for big dog, I too love to have a big huge dog as my pet. However, living space in my country is rather restricted and it is illegal to have keep big dog in the flat. If the authority finds out, they will force you to give the dog away or else they will capture it.

I too love bigs dogs, but I also like small dogs. I think they all have their own purposes. ALL dogs are good for affection; big dogs are good for protection and feelings of security, and small dogs are good for cuddling. I think Irish Wolfhounds are really cool. I also like Great Danes (this breed may even be better for a cross country guardian). Irish Wolfhounds are the tallest breed, but when it comes to overall size (height + weight) I believe that is either a Saint Bernard or a Great Dane. But Saint Bernards wouldn't be good for a cross country trip, they have thick coats and that might be hard for them. Great Danes have short coats Of course, Irish Wolfhounds would be more than capable of protecting you too. You could start a "giant dog" rescue! I have plans on starting a small animal rescue in the future, but mine won't be breed/size specific. But i do know it is harder to adopt out larger dogs, so having a big dog rescue would be great!

Irish Wolfhound and Tibetan Mastiff are both massi - Irish Wolfhound and Tibetan Mastiff are both massive big dogs!
The Irish Wolfhound is indeed not a small dog :) Ar first I thought that the Tibetan Mastiff was of a bigger size. But a check in Wiki showed that the Tibetan Mastiff is usually in the range of 25 to 28inch while the Irish Wolfhound is 30 to 32inch. Both are awesome dogs nevertheless.
