Why do we make poor choices?

In most case, we feel that we know what is best for us in our lives, from the relationships we create to the food we eat. Still, somewhat mysteriously, it is often difficult to make the right choices for ourselves. We find ourselves hanging out with someone who leaves us feeling drained or choosing to eat fast food over a salad. We go through phases where we stop taking vitamins, even though we feel so much better when we do. Why do you think this is so?

This happens probably because we often use our emotions when it comes to relationship and cravings when it comes to diet over and above our critical thinking. I personally experience this what I called "wrong choices" because we know from the start that it is wrong, yet we tend to do it.

I bet this happens when we are sick and tired of denying ourselves something cause we are told its not good for us. There are days when even I, a diabetic, want some pretty normal unhealthy food. Like today, I craved for pasta and not the whole wheat kind so I got me pasta when we ate out.

I think it's dependent on our current state of mind or what emotional state is the deciding factor. I call them regrets more than poor choices which I think makes them more poignant. For example the poor choice or regret I made was when I lost my job and I was worried how I was going to pay the rent, instead of relying on my confidence that I could easily get another job I took the incredibly poor decision to move in with my partner, thus giving my flat up and living with partner rent free, however it wasn't that cut and dried, it was the worst decision/regret I ever made. Looking back it was the easy way out and I took it, instead of relying on myself to support myself and get another job.

The occasional junk meal will not hurt you.I know what you mean, sometimes we rebel and try to do it differently. We start feeling a bit low and cannot be bothered it is alright sometimes.I suppose we just get fed up doing the right thing all the time.

Hi Pose123 When its come to eating its boring to eat salad all the time and sometimes its not easy here to find salad all the time especially if you eat outside and don't wanna to go to far just to eat healthy food. I usually buy that's I think delicious and not to far. I usually mad bad decision when my emotion get rid my common sense. When I really mad I don't wanna hear what others said, I had to cool down first before my common sense back and try to figure out I am I making bad decision or not.

Choices sometimes are not always from our own thinking, some or mostly from outside which we gets like from friends, family and others. Then if the results came and failed your in the side of disappointment because you convince to that choice instead of your own choice. Whatever choice you made whether are come from out it become your's - because we are the final maker of decission.

Hi visavis, You make a very good point and it's true that we are often influenced by others, some to a much greater degree than others. As you say however, the final choice is really our own. Thank you for sharing. Blessings.

Yes that is what happens sometimes. We know that things happen and we think that there are some things that are best for us than we realize. There are times when I can make a choice, because I think that it is best for me, but in reality it was the wrong choice. I have to say though sometimes it is best to go with something and see if it is the right choice than not go with it, because it could have been the right one. If that makes sense haha.

None of us are perfect so we will not always make good choices for ourselves and our lives. I think for the most part that we don't intend to make poor choices. I think that we make poor choices for ourselves when we don;t think think things through enough. Making a choice in haste usually ends up in poor judgment.

I find it hard, Pose, to stay off the sweets. I get sick eating them due to my gastric bypass, but I come right back to them in small amounts. They sabotage my efforts to eat healthier and thus lose weight. I don't have compulsions in anything else, really.. just treats like cookies and ice cream cones. I hope I can just stay off them for one month. I know I will survive, but it feels like I can't. I think there is something within us, maybe depression, that drives us to feed it with the things that stimulate more feelings of depression. We get a little high to feel better and then it Christmas trees out of control and you become even more depressed than before.

Hi PointlessQuestions, Thank you for sharing my friend and I think that depression probably plays a big role when it comes to things like sweets. I know I like to eat when I get depressed but I've been doing much better during the past year or two. Blessings.

In an environment of mperfect information, coupled with human frailties, we cannot know everthing there is to know and any point in time. Hence, we humans are proned to making poor decisions about any phenomenon under scrutiny. Hence, through self evaluation, and additional information being made available-using a mixture of approaches (including research techniques)- one is expected to learn from the experiences gathered, over time. Interestingly, if one learns from any experience gathered previously or currently, it should impact ones behavior the next time around! I suppose, that this (state of mind) where one shows that the correct lessons are learnt from any expereince gathered, is what one should strive towards, don't you think?

Hi samson, I agree that we should learn from our experiences but it often happens that we don't seem to learn at all. Thank you for commenting. Blessings.
