Child labor?

I had a class lecture about moral studies. And today one of the topic was about child labor. A group of my classmates present the topic to the class. After seeing the presentation I felt pity for the children in the third world countries. Especially the fact they have to do a heavy work for 16 cent per hour in such a harsh condition. And some of the children became deformed, handicapped, and died because of the job they are doing. I heard that Nike shoes are made by this child labor so that we can have cheaper shoes. So what do you think of that?

Poverty is the main reason why some children are forced to work in a cheap labor. But then, this not supposed to happen. I still believe in children's rights. It is punishable to put the child in force labor.

There are certain laws about child labor. If I'm not mistaken in our country, there's a law allowing kids to work, for example in their family business, like if they have a shop the kid can work there and help out in manning the shop, dusting the shelves, that sort of thing. But when these kids are being treated poorly, like in sweatshops, we also have laws against the owners and operators of these establishments. But sadly, some kids will do anything just to help bring some money in the family. They themselves can feel the need for more means of earning money even if they're practically being abused already. The problem here is that there are fewer jobs than applicants, and fewer food to feed the ever-increasing family. It is sad, but I have seen first hand that those who barely can make ends meet are the ones who have at least 10 kids (with another one on the way).

Well yeah. Something like that is often unavoidable, especially if there are no options to continue living. It also happens in my country, which is considered to be one of the developed nations. By paying less the company expects to gain more profit. But those bosses never realize that if they do not pay attention to those children, let's say, their health, then sooner or later the production will decrease. I believe the first hand that must help is the government. Make tight regulation about under-age worker. I mean, really tight and strict so people won't dare doing something awful to the children.

Hello TrinityDownpour, some of the child labor activities in several countries (especially on the third world countries) are brought by poverty. Because of low wages, they allow young people (perhaps kids and teenagers) to engage in hard works or difficult jobs. So if a family is composed of 5 members (a mother, father and 3 children), a father may work together with his 3 children (or even with the mother too) and it will make them to have higher earning in working every day. Some countries too practice child labor because it is already their tradition. I feel disappointed as well everytime i could hear about those young ones who are forced to do jobs and it is true that it's very common in third world countries.
