Our department namely Civil Engineering department will hold its acquaintance day on July 28, 2012. As one of the PICE officers, I am in charge to look for a token or gift of appreciation to our guest speaker. I really have no idea of what to look for. Could you please suggest what to give? Additionally, our guest speaker is a Civil Engineer. :)

Some suggestions would be to select something from your community. My community is know for its Maple Syrup so we will often give a speaker a gift box with the syrup and some meat and cheese from a local meat market. If you want a more traditional gift you could look at a quality pen and pencil set.

Nice suggestion. Last year, we had given a quality pen also. I just thought maybe this year, the token should be something new. :)

Well, you can give him a T-square with your signatures or a personalized technical pen, or maybe a drawing board. Seriously, you can give him a tie, cufflinks, or maybe an accessory bag. I am guessing that he is male? Try visiting the men's section of a department store to get some ideas...

One of the things that is one of the most common gifts here to give to people that do something special for others, like doing a guest speaking appearance or even coaching children's sports is to present that person with a gift certificate for dinner. This is a great gift because people hesitate to give money, but a gift certificate is money that can only be used in one place so it is something that the recipient appreciates because it saves them money in the long run.

Normally, if there is any official function with guest speaker invited, we would give them a specially made token of appreciation with name of our department, or maybe something which is special from the local perspective. The main purpose is so that the guest speaker would remember what happened and where he went to when he sees the token in the future. Hope this gives you some ideas.

maybe you can give a plaque of appreciation to your guest speaker. or some decor/figurine that he/she can put on his/her table. and by seeing that token s/he'll remember the day you guys chose him/her to be your guest.

Is your speaker from your hometown? if not, why not give him something that your hometown is known for. Better to give non-food item to have it as a souvenir or commonly, a plaque of appreciation is given plus token. so your token can be food item if you got a plaque.
