Children & Parents: The shooting in the Aurora, Colorado movie theater

United States

All day long I've been listening to the news about the shooting that took place in the Colorado movie theater last night. Aparently, there were children in the theater and at least 1 of them was killed. The movie showing at the theater was THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and I understand the theater was packed. Apparently, a 24 year old guy went on a random shooting spree at the beginning of the midnight showing. Why were children in that theater? That specific movie is NOT a childrens' movie. Why did parents have children in that theater at midnight? Those children should have been safe at home tucked in their beds. Forgive me, but it seems like irresponsible parenting, to me. What are your thoughts?

You sound exactly like me! I missed all the news today because we were handling a sick bird (he passed away). I was clueless anything had even happened. The first article I read was about a couple who had their 4 year old (supposedly sleeping in a movie seat) and I believe a 4 month old. My Mom and I were talking about this and I told here exactly what you are saying here: why were those kids there? Who brings a young child at midnight to a movie theater? I could see if it was during their nap time in the afternoon or something, but not at midnight.

That story was on the news tonight while my parents and I were eating dinner. The reporters kept mentioning how little kids were there and all that and it shocked me too. I asked out loud "Children shouldn't have even been at a midnight movie" but my mom said that at that time of night, the kids would be sleeping and they would probably sleep through the movie if the parents couldn't find anyone to watch their kids. She said she never would've done that but I understood a little bit better why kids would be at the theater. I went to see Magic Mike the other day and I saw a few kids with their mom who were 12 and under. I couldn't believe it at all and so a midnight movie where a kid can sleep doesn't seem as bad as taking a 9 year old to see a movie about male strippers lol.

I agree that small children should not have been in the theaters. A) it was a midnight show, and kids should have. Even in bed. B) it is not a childrens movie. My husband went to a midnight showing, but I was a responsible parent and decided to wait and see it.
