Government employees seem to be hard to deal with

I wonder if it's a common issue anywhere in the world. Government employees doesn't seem to love and be happy with their jobs. I find them the worst to deal with. I always hated having to go to a gov't office to work on papers, permits, etc, because it's so stressful and the people just don't know what Customer Service means. Afterall, it's the people's money that pays for their salaries. Aren't they paid enough? Aren't extended lunch breaks enough to energize them? It's a common sight here in the Philippines to see gov't employees frowning and even sometimes ignoring their countrymen trying to get a good service from them. Probably there are just a few of them who are true to the term public service, but most are still the traditional gov't employees we've known since years ago. How about those who are from other countries, is this true to your case, too?

You've got that correct! Greeks are annoying at the best of times, but in Government service they just become unbearable! Here they have a nasty habit of putting the mentally retarded (and there are a lot of them in Greece) in the highest positions. So it is pointless to ask to see the boss.

I guess others run for office but become parts of the bureaucracy themselves. The better geniuses are self employed or become successful in big companies rising to the top...

Not all government employee are acting something like what you think, friend. But I agree with that there are some government employees really hard to deal with. They don't respect people who is paying their salary. They are arrogant and don't mind how they can serve effectively and efficiently... I hope the government will have the opportunity to assess government employees to make sure those people in the government always carried the principles of Public office is a public trust

Yup! I agree with you they have the easiest jobs in our country. But I don't know why they are being arrogant since the purpose of passing civil service examination is to classify people that have an integrity to work in the government. If the President, really true in what he said on his SONA. I think they must rate depend on their performance so that they force to do good thing and serve the people with integrity.

They're general attitude towards their job would just show that there is not much good leadership going on to motivate these people to show passion and love for their job. I really think they have the easiest job in the nation. Even much easier than street cleaners who only gets paid 1/4 of their salaries, and yet these street cleaners coudl still afford to be courteous and give a smile to people they meet.

Aha! This is quite common for Philippine government employees. I think they are, actually the worst to deal with alright. We would often see them stalling, and sometimes they would not even mind letting the people wait and they would chat and walk around and so on.. but they do not start on time and end their office a few minutes before the office hours! see that is really something, eh! I wish they'd be regulated, or checked and seriously dealt with. private companies have appraisals and they don't so probably that is why they slack off during their work.

Performance Management seems not part of their vocabulary, then. I wish one day, if I ever get to mess with them again, that I'd have the guts to really call them out. Perhaps, if they would really do a bad job.

It is about the same here, the government employees here believe they deserve everything like the highest perk, benefits and salary and air conditional offices provided by our tax dollars in order to carry out their public services. They like to frown and lecture the public whenever someone try to ask them more than a question, they always have extended lunch break and break time during their work day, it is always a pain going to the government office trying to get things done. I am seriously doubtful those government employees really think we pay their salary, it is them that need to serve us, instead they always expect the public to serve them, it is especially true for those working in the inland revenue department, post office, custom office, police department, and car registration office across the country. It is a totally stressful event for everyone to go to government office especially the federal government agency. Sigh!!

It has become a common trend for the government employees to believe they are there for the sake of a state's needs, not to provide public services. In modern bureacratic system, the tax payers like us are actually constantly reminded to serve the government employees' interests and needs, not the other way around even though you pay their salary with your tax dollars. I think this type of mentality among government employees is very prevalent in today government institutions no matter it is a democracy or communism or dictatorship. It is a sad fact we have to live with daily as long as there is government institutions control major part of our life.

And, I thought, this was more of a cultural issue. So, it really is a common disease among government officials and staff, then. It's a sad truth to deal with.

I think this is universal on this planet. I find that these people get their jobs based on who they know not what they are capable of doing. That usually means they are often incompetent, and if they are competent don't really care if the job gets done right or not. Their customer service skills are usually non-existent. To Joe Blow citizens like us we would think they would be motivated to do well because they have pay and job security most of the rest of us can only dream of. Yup I hate dealing with them myself.

Everyone who currently has a job should be grateful for that fact, and should give it their best, because there are millions of unemployed people who would kill for a job. I hope they realize that.
