Is it OK to be Rude to a Telemarketer calling you at Supper time?

So I know that telemarketers always seem to call at the most inconvenient time, but does this give us the right to be extremely rude to them over the phone? Be honest, how do you normally handle a telemarketer calling you? I have worked in a call center before ( inbound not outbound) and I know how rude people can be even when they call you. I have a little more respect for people calling me now because I have call center experience.

I just tell them straight I'm not interested. If they still won't stop, I will insist that I'm not interested and I'm hanging up the phone. I just don't think it's worth my trouble to engage and spend more taking time. I'd rather not spend energy getting all worked up. I know they're just doing their job, but they also have to realize that I have the right to my peace and quiet.

That's the thing, a lot of people are upset because their "time is being wasted", yet they spend a whole lot of time yelling at the person and getting upset which is a bigger waste of time in my opinion. Thanks for your post.

I am not rude, but if I don't know a number I don't answer - ever. Maybe that is rude lol At dinner we don't answer the phone at all unless my husbands work call him & then he has to answer.

Hey I think it's better to not answer at all than to get on the phone and say mean things to that person. Thanks for you post.

It depends on your approach towards the clients. It differs in what kind of voice tone. But, I never do that for telemarketers. They are just doing their job.

That's right they are just doing their job. I very politely let them finish their sentence and let them know "no thank you", saying that takes just as much time as making a rude comment anyways. I know of a lot of people who fly off the handle when a telemarketer calls. I think this job would be a lot harder than working in an inbound call centre like I do and I know that my job consists of a lot of "interesting" people calling in as well.

I think, it's never okay to be rude. I think by simply saying that you are in the middle of something and that you cannot take the call right now will put them off.

I agree. If you really think about it, a polite "no thanks" is quicker than flying off the handle and being rude to someone anyways.
