why do some people always hesitant to tell their age?

I can freely tell my age to any people I personally know. And for me it's not a big thing to say and in fact I'm proud to say that I look younger than my age. But for security reason I limit my birth date only to those who are close to me.
If you are asked about your age, would you hide it or tell that it's a secret? If the one asking is not requiring you to tell your birth date, just your age, would you consider that as something too personal? I just notice that some people are shy to tell their real age. What's your view here?

I don't.
I would proudly tell anyone my age. It doesn't mean that I'm still young, though, but this age comes with a blessing. This age means a reminder that we still live one more year, so be grateful. We have a chance to do good things, to reach dreams, and so on. But just like you, I don't mention my birth date easily although I would not think negatively if someone knows it. I am also proud to say that (based on what people say) I look younger than my age.
Sometimes it makes me proud and blush, but sometimes it has a bad impact too. People will always think I'm still young, so they won't listen to me.

yes it is a blessing as we get aged. meaning we are more knowledgeable in life than everyone younger than us at least in matter relating to life not necessary the all-knowing type. mentioning birth date is I think too personal coz it could be used against us like they can access our personal files, finances through our birth date something like that. it's one of the verification they have to pass when inquiring about our personal files. we never know how curious other people are! yes, sometimes people think that we are still young with how we look so they don't listen.

Until recently I would have to figure out my age by asking what year it is! I stopped keeping track of the number when I reached 30! But now that I have to state my age for surveys I Do know the number. I have been told I look younger than my age but that isn't why I can tell my age. It is because I see age as just a number. There are 18 year olds who are more mature than some 40 year olds! It is just a number.

yes age is just a number, soon people need not hide their age but be proud of it. I guess today aging is often associated with sickness. well, being happy and having a positive outlook in life is a very effective way to look younger than our age.

I just turned 27 and when asked about my age in the office, I answered without hesitation. I could see that some people, especially some women, were surprised about how unabashed I was about my age. I don't see why I should keep it a secret or why I should lie about it. It's a fact of life, we get older every year. I don't see the point of pretending to be young when I am not. And refusing to state my age will only make people think I am old.

Yes, not stating your age or being offended when asked only gives people an opportunity to speculate, and worse, gossip! Also, I don't think being old is something embarrassing, nor is being young something to be proud of. When I stated my age to some officemates, those who were quite older remarked "Oh, so young!" as if complimenting me. Those who were younger had no reaction. I don't think age in itself matters. It is only impressive when coupled with an achievement that is quite unusual for that age group. For example, I would admire a CEO at age 27 and a very physically fit woman at age 50.But I won't admire them for just being 27 or 50.

exactly! when we hide our age, people think that we are old. I also have no hesitation to tell it to the people I know.. I think this hiding of age is common to women who'd like to look young forever but then people get older as you said no matter what people do.

yes age is really something to be proud of or admired of if it goes with the person's achievements too. But I personally admire older people without those achievements in life if I see that they have good experience to share about life.

I don't have any problem with letting others know my age. I am twenty four and I am proud of it. I think maybe girls would feel that age is something personal as it has something to do with their wish to stay young and beautiful. I believe they would start to hide their age as early as after twenty one years old. This is understandable and we should let it be if they are not open to that question.

right we should be sensitive enough to notice that they don't like talking about their age. I do respect them and do not insist anymore. I think all people would like to stay young and if only they could freeze their age at 20's they would do.
glad you're proud of your age.

Everybody willing to tell their age but the people won't talk with aged people and they search for the same age group persons. So everybody hiding their age. If one person tells the age another person think about it and his behavior is changing after that.

well I like talking to more aged persons coz I think they are more knowledgeable than I am in life. I don't limit my friendship to people of my the same age level. I think this is only applicable in some people but not generally. thanks for your respond.

I have a friend who keeps on telling everyone that she's 35, when in fact she just turned 38 this year. I don;t know what her reasons are, and I never get to asking her why bother doing it.
I have no problem telling my real age. It's just a number. It used to be a big deal when I was in my mid-twenties but now, it's no biggie.

she is telling a lie and in my own point of view nothing remain secret in this world. maybe her aim is to have an impression to others that she's still young but that is not being true to the people she know. it's good to know that telling your age is not a biggie. yep, it's just a number.

now I understand why you hide your age during your mid 20's. it's related to your personal achievements in life. In my case I don't have problems with that, we can't have all we want in life and there is nothing they can do if we are not as successful as they wanted us to see. people who judged you by what you achieved in life are I think not interested in your personality as a whole but only want to belong to people of the same level or higher level.
yes, lying is not good and no secrets will remain untold. she should watch her words often otherwise her secret will be revealed accidentally by her own words. telling the truth doesn't need this kind of skills
thanks

Back then I was so insecure, like "hey, I'm already 24 and I haven't done much yet with my life I have nothing to say for myself yet!" That sort of thing. It's like, I'm only a supervisor then so I'm so insecure about myself that I tend to sell my own self short.
About my friend, I just hope by next year she can keep track that she's supposed to be 36, lol! She can't still say that she's 35. That's the thing about lying; you have to make sure to be consistent and convincing so you won't be caught. At least when you're telling the truth, you don't even have to struggle with stories.

Yes there are people who are really shy in so far as their age is concern. Perhaps they do not want people to know that they are old already. In my case, I do not consider it much as an issue and I have never lied on my age. It is really funny to think when someone is young and how he or she wishes to become an adult. Now when someone is old already, she or she wants to become young. You are indeed blessed to look younger than your age. Consider it as a blessing.

well thanks good idea.. but for some this is not always the case. I've larned form this discussion that people hide their age for different reasons like they are not acting their age and their status in life.. age is a blessing and getting younger in looks as we age is really a big blessing.

Actually that is one thing I have learned from mylot.
I found that there are people like, in their culture, asking age is too personal.
So, i guess that depends on cultural beliefs.
Here in our country, age is not a big deal.
It's seldom you see/met people from my country who hides their age.
Like I said, age is not a big deal here, anyone can directly ask about age even on first acquaintance.

yes in some culture it is rude to ask the girl about her age, so that is too personal for them. in some countries it's not biggie to tell the age. I think everybody has their reasons and we should respect it. I just find it, unusual sometimes to encounter people who are hesitant to tell their age.

why do some people always hesitant to tell their age?
Maybe because they are not acting their real age. I dont see any reason to be ashamed of our age.Its more shameful if we grow backwards then we become retarded
. But well if other people dont feel comfortable of telling their age then let them be..Its their personal right also.

well that could be true, they are not acting their real age. I think for me age is often associated with knowledge, the longer you live in this world or how old you are the more you know in this life. So that is something to be proud of and just like what you said not be ashamed of. Yah, I do respect their personal right, I usually do not insist if I can feel that they are not comfortable in saying it.

I think this only happens to older people who are in the midst of younger people.
We tend to hide our age because we feel embarrassed that we are so old compared to those around us. I do feel that way sometimes, but to those who are already close to me, i tell them my age.
But at any rate, the reaction when i tell them my real age is "you look so much younger than your age."

I have no issues about telling my age to anyone. Unlike you I cannot even say this proudly that I look younger than my age because I don't. I look my age and I am fine with it. I don't really understand why people especially girls hide their age or lie about it. When children are young they proudly tell their age, in fact when their parents say you cannot do this thing because you are only twelve they would say no I am twelve years and four months old. But when they turn above twenty five years they start hiding their age. Amazing isn't it?
@jobfindonline (1744)

yes what you shared is very true. When we are young we proudly say our age but when we get aged the opposite of it is what some people are doing, they hide it. Maybe they want to be forever young I guess.. but no matter how we hide it we will still get old. I just can't believe why other people are really serious about not telling their age. I don't hide my age to the people I know coz just like you I have no issues with it. yes it's kinda amazing why people think that way sometimes.

Hi jobfindonline. I'm not shy to tell my age because, just like you, I look younger than my age. However, I decided to not reveal my age too often because of the follow up questions I am getting. Asking about my age per se isn't personal. But after learning about my age, many of them would ask me personal questions, such as why am I not married? Do I have a boyfriend? etc.

that's a good point seriousnuts, the follow up questions we received especially the question why we are not married yet. well, we can always divert the topic to another topic that we feel more comfortable to talk about. If they are sensitive they would notice that and stop asking but then if they insist to know more of the personal matters it's beter to tell it straight or do it by joke to let them think, hey that's too personal for me. thanks for the good points here!

Hi Job!
I always be transparent with my age! I don't have any objection to share my age to anyone! But we have people who never reveal their age to anyone! Even with friends too. Some of the reason for not revealing is they would have not got married and when we came to know their age they feel even more bad by our expression!
But finding a person's age is not a challenging task to do in this today world. Technology helps us to achieve it!
I also have another point why people don't share their birth date. Probably it will be a default password for many documents! Like, in our office we have a default password to open the payslips. The default password is "xxxxxx@ddmmyy", where xxxxxx denotes the birth day and ddmmyy denotes the birth day of the associate. The payslips are system generated and we cannot do anything with that! So, possible way is to hide the password protected documents from other! So, for more precaution! People don't even reveal their birth day to the people around them...!

hi glad to know you have no problem telling your age. well, I also agree when it comes to legal documents our birth date is really important and shouldn't be disclosed to anyone. I know it's a private thing.
about the payslips, I think you all should suggest to change the default password. so you can all freely tell your age not necessarily the month and day.

I personally don't have an issue with revealing my age to others, I just don't see a reason to hide it I suppose. I think some have an issue with it due to being worried that they might be discriminated in some shape or form. An example of this occuring would be during a job interview, one might worry that revealing their age might play a factor in whether or not they get the job.
@jobfindonline (1744)
•
30 Jul 12
Telling a lie about your age during an interview is not a good idea, later when it is found out, great inconveniences may happen. How sad people are doing this just to get a job because in some countries they are imposing age limit as their qualification. they have good reasons but I think it's part of the discrimination we experience today.

Personally it does not bother me to tell people the day I was born, or my age. Very seldom do I share the yr. and let most of them figure it out themselves. I am going to be 48 in just a couple of days and most people would never guess it, so that is always good. To me age is just a number, so why should you want to hide it?

well, that's good to hear. letting them know just the month and day and not the year will really make people wonder. now I understand more why people are normally hesitant to share their age. whatever it is I do respect, anyway it's just a number but its really good to know the age of a person. Thanks.

I would say if someone asks, but I don't like saying because I already think I'm old even though a lot of people think that 24 years is not old. I think that the main reason that I don't like is when I'm around of persons that are much younger than me, like in my new college that everyone is younger than me.
@jobfindonline (1744)
•
2 Aug 12
hi moneywinner! I guess that must be the reason why other people are so reserved to tell their age when they knew that they are in a group of people younger than them like in your case. People don't want to have gaps or be treated differently because of their age. But if I were in your group of friends, age wouldn't be a problem in accepting friends.

people hesito tell their age becuase they don't want to others think they are too old or too young. you know, no one likes becoming old so if you think they are youger than they actually are. they will feel so happy. so not everyone is willing to tell their ages. becuase they want to let you think they are young. i don't mind it so i cn freely tell my age, too. maybe becuase i'm young so i don't mind. so i can know what the people who see it as a secret think. but i really don't mind what my real age is.

maybe we can get a reply from them. Thanks for your comments.
