I was reading today about the mars one project , and they wanting to colonized mars by sending the first couple to mars in 2023 it is said the plan will begin in 2016 . You will live in capsule with supplies and life support , every two year they will add another new resident . The only catch is this is a one way trip you will never get to go home ! My boyfriend is so excited about it and since they want volunteer he is saying we should , would you go on a trip like that , no return ? leaving all your family behind ? whats your thoughts

I do not ever want to live overseas when many of my fellow people here dream of that, all the more will I not want to be sent to another planet! Since this is very new technology and is not yet perfected so there can be many risks. I am not the type who would take such risks. Although, since I am alone most of the time, living in another planet wouldn't be much of a shock.

Those are might thoughts too, I could not leave earth permanent . And If I was to go to another planet I would not volunteer to be the guinea pig. It would be nice seeing other planet but maybe in my other life when it will be just like going to another country

I would love to see this also , I would be afraid going in to rocket yet a ship in the middle of space , living on a planet wearing space suit every day .

Silver, i think i won't be interested with that deal since i still have little child to take care. He still needs me to take care of him although he is in the kindy age. Maybe one day when they have return trip to earth, then i might want to consider travel to Mars as another holiday destination. Would like to feel how is it like living on Mars. At this moment, i am not ready to leave my family, relatives and friends behind...

They would not want me since I am beyond child-bearing years, but I think being a one-way trip would be a deal-breaker for me. Not because of leaving everyone behind, but the idea of dying on Mars. I'm not sure how I feel about that. What will they do with the deceased on Mars? Will they have a cemetery near the colony? Will everyone have to be cremated? Or will they shoot you out into space to join all the space junk? A one-way trip is a huge commitment for any couple considering it. Everyone thinks their love for each other will last forever, but look at the divorce rate here on earth. Forever relationships are very rare indeed. At least here on earth, a couple can add distance between themselves. If this couple on Mars comes to despise each other, where can they go to get away from each other? Also, there will be no potential for developing another relationship with someone else unless as the colony gets more people as years go by, they condone polygamy. Or maybe the couples won't be married and as more couples are sent they will be expected to swap/share partners for the sake colonization diversity? Speaking of diversity, this is an interesting subject to follow as it develops. How will they choose each couple to go? I can see this turning into a major study in selective breeding. What type of people will this new colony consist of? Only the healthiest, most intelligent? How will the population on Mars compare to the population on Earth in diversity of its people, intelligence, social hierarchy, crime, etc?

You would go down in history , I would wonder what they would do with deceased also . Everything sound good on paper but it might be a different case when you are actually there . I dont think all the resident will be married . I think they would want only healthy people from all race and age group , the first set of volunteer will have a free pass is this happen to work you know normal people will not be able to afford it . Imagine the first baby martian , They will probably be better than earth because of lot of intelligent people will also have to be on those trip . It would be like in the old days when you could sail around the world and see it without any visa, passport , You could live any where without restriction . Now thinking about it , I would take the opportunity if it present it self to me, for my future children sake .

I would not be surprised if they only want healthy, super intelligent people from one race and one age group to go there. They will be the ones to created new, viable life on Mars. I do think you have presented a great subject to monitor as the project progresses.

Mars is not able to support human life. I don't think they can do anything to make it liveable in such short a time. I wonder what article you were reading. And, NO, for the love of life, would I go for a trip as absurd as that.

wow, it is so cool, but i won't go alone if i can't stay with my family, family is most important, it will be very interesting to live on mars, science technique is improving, so i believe we can live on mars in the future although it sounds crazy.

Anyway already now we are in the virtual world hardly interacting physically with so many of our near and dear ones. As long as there will be a virtual connection it will not be a big problem as people are already used to being that way!

Its such a shame that people hardly interact in the real world anymore , the internet is where we at now . You have a good point people hardly spend time getting to know anyone anymore , so contacting from out of space might not be so bad for few lol

I will not going anywhere else if half of earth residents move to Mars :D it means there will be more spaces on this earth, there will no fighting over island or boundaries. There will be more foods to eat cos will more land for planting. Even if its free to Mars, I will not go, who knows what happen when we landinf there? earth is earth, our home. Perfect home for imperfect residents, what a gift. Some people just do not know how to treat the earth well.
