i've come across an article that shows the recent additions to official words in the dictionary and their meanings. and i've noticed that the four-letter acronym OMG is considered an altogether new word. there are also new "words" that are just jargons shorted words in the list. what is the basis for linguists to consider a "word" anyway? can anybody shed light to this? btw, omg would mean oh my god, an expression of shock.

Nowdays there are more and more abbreivations for words. Why these abbreivations can be collected in the dictionary can be accounted for the fact that these abbreivtions are used instead of the original words gradually and have become acceptible by all of the people. These new words just bing us huge convenience in texting, and people can also understand the meanings. So if putting them in the dictionary will expand the its use widely, thus binging convenience to all~!!

quite right. or maybe they just added those "words" as a gimmick to promote their dictionary. bear in mind that there are at least two authorities in linguistics, and these are also commercially competing with each other. well, i dunno. but i agree with your point of view. tnx.
