I just learned this table manner today

Today I read via the net and I just learned that if you dropped your knife or fork on the floor by a mistake in the restaurant. Then you are not supposed to pick it up by yourself because it is not suitable. The best is just to ask the waiter to give you a new knife or fork.

Really? Well, if ever I picked the thing that I've dropped, it doesn't mean that I am going to use it again. Of course I will ask for a new one, but picking what I've dropped is not suitable?...?

Yes, according to the article, you shouldn't pick up the fork or knife by yourself and this is why I am surprised to hear that.

Even though it's considered not suitable, I would still pick it up myself. Dropping something I'd feel rude leaving it for someone else to pick up, waiters and waitresses already have to put up with enough from people, I'd try to help them out in some way. I just don't see it as being a big deal picking it up myself, it's not like I'm going to eat with it.

I will also do the same. It is easy for me to pick up the utensils and then I will ask the waiter to give me a clean utensil.

Me too. I think if I make a mess, I should clean it up.

I also don`t know about this. I mean is it depend on the tradition ? If i dropped anything on the restaurant i will pick it up but i will still asked a waiter to bring me new one. Not because it is not suitable but also maybe it is not clean anymore. We should prioritize our health after all. It is kinda interesting though because i really have no idea about this matter and the waiter in our country may feel under estimated when i dropped a knife or something but i would still call him to pick it when it is right in front of me

It's my first time to hear about that. It's your instinct to pick it up because you are the one who dropped it in the first place. But well, it's a new learning for me too. Thanks!

Hi, I am surprised to read about this table manner. I was not aware of this. I have always picked up anything I dropped in a restaurant. But I am glad that you shared this with us. I am going to follow this.

I have known this for a while now. I know that it is unhealthy to eat stuff off the floor because a lot of people walk around on the floors with their dirty shoes. So if I drop a fork or other eating utensils, I am quick to clean up the utensils before I am able to use it again for eating food with.

I will pick up the fork or knife and then ask the waiter to give me a new item.

I did not know about this rule in the restaurant. Now I know, once I accidentally dropped my spoon or fork, rather than picking it up, I'll just call the waiter and ask for another piece of that.

In fact I still doubt to it. But since most of the time I use chopsticks, so I don't know more about the western table manner.

This does happen, although not always, when we dine out. Especially with the kids around. But it's been my practice to pick up any item my kids, or I myself, dropped. I feel it's kinda bossy to ask the waiter to do so for me. But of course, I'll just set it aside and ask for a new knife or fork, or ask my son to do so in restaurants where they have an allocated area for the spoons and forks. I think in very seldom occasions I will just ask the waiter, like if I'm holding my baby and I don't have anybody with me to pick it up. Or if the knife or fork landed under a nearby table and I feel shy to get it myself. But other than that, I'm not really comfortable asking other people to do the favor for me. I'm a bit hard-headed but at least I'm honest. =)

I feel the same like you. It is easy for myself to do so. I don't want to bother the waiter because of my mistake.

I have heard about it, but I don't take it too serious. I believe if I drop something somewhere it is my fault, so I am picking it up and give it to the waiter. I always disliked people who are snobs and believe that a position in the society would make you mean something more in life.

I do the same like you. I will feel embarrassed to let the waiter to pick it up for me as I am closer and it is also my fault.

I think everything on the internet is not 100% truth or right. It has been written by a human like us. So don't have to believe everything. It is like some sites claim to offer lots of money for working online but it is not true. lol I know when I have dropped a fork or spoon I have to pick it up and that is being humble. I will not use that but ask another from the waiter. So be careful what you believe in. Just because it is written on internet doesn't make it true..have a wonderful day. And don't forget to pick up what you drop on the floor in a restaurant.
