Work Suspended for Private Sectors, too

Philippines
August 7, 2012 1:39am CST
It was just announced on news a few minutes ago, that all work in private sectors, including BPOs are suspended due to the heavy rains and floods. Of course, this is only for the affected areas. My husband, working for a big call center, got a text message from his office about this and that he has to prepare his team here in Cebu, to cover for the volume of calls coming in, since the Manila team will really be handicapped until such time. I had to wake him up from his sleep so he could respond to the emergency call. I hope things will be better in Manila, very soon, and would not have any more casualties, or worse, death.

Sadly, I still went to our office earlier, only to go home early too. Oh well, I just finished some tasks and went off worrying if I would be able to go home. Luckily, the path I have taken is clear of floods and I have arrived home safe and sound. However, I still got my pants, socks and shoes wet. Still, the rain is coming hard and the effect of the flood is getting really scary.

Quite a day for you, Agent Gulaman. I am also working, even from home. It’s my constant worry that our power might be out or cut anytime soon (with our internet connection). I just hope that of that happens, my boss will cut me some slack. He’s aboard while I am stuck and utterly wishing that I am curled up in bed instead. Best to wash those wet things before they start to smell.

Oh my, you still have work at home. Not cool, but still better than going to work at our country's situation. Anyway, it seems that your job is critical that is why you're boss can't afford you not working at all. Good thing that I leave my company laptop so that they can't contact me to work from home too! Anyway, it seems that our company declared another holiday for tomorrow so I think I will have to use it up and just sleep off big time. I guess that I won;t be having wet and smelly clothes coming in for tomorrow.

Hey Agent Gulaman, you're still lucky you didn't get stuck on the flooded streets. I guess it's just normal to get wet in that kind of weather, but make sure you don't get a flu. Good thing the gov't already declared work suspension for tomorrow, so you don't have to experience the same fate.

My husband also can't come home though it's official that even private sectors are allowed to go home already. I was supposed to attend a seminar in Pampanga today but it was cancelled due to the weather condition. Good thing coz' the kids are also staying home with the classes suspended. But my husband works under the Technical Department so their team is not allowed to leave yet and may even extend work hours to ensure there will be people to attend expected downtime, whatsoever. He keeps on calling me to ask how we are and the kids and I am worried that he is not yet home with us and the rain is still pouring hard. I pray this rain will stop soon because he also might get stranded if the floods coninue to rise along the streets. It's also an hour drive from his office in Clark to our house and if he will be staying any longer there, he might find the streets flooded already on his way home tonight. Oh, I really wish this bad weather goes away soon. =(

Good that you and your kids are just home and safe. Your husband is a bit unlucky to be stuck in the office. I understand, tech guys like him are really needed in times like this, that's why he's asked to stay longer. It sucks, but perhaps, it was better for him to be stuck in the building than on the flooded streets.

Yeah, it is all flooded out. From the news, the situation might go on until Thursday and only through Friday that the weather will be better. I just hope we can endure this floods until such time or even better halt the continuous rain already.

If the rains will not cease, then the flooding will just get worse. I hope those who needed to evacuate have already been rescued and help comes to them as they need food, clothing, medicines and other relief goods.

My boyfriend had called me when I woke up around 6:00 am then he told me that I shouldn't go to the office anymore or else I would be stranded because it was stated on the news that the flood is everywhere already. I was still attempting to go if the rain stops even though I would be late. But then it didn't stop as my parents told me too that I should not go to office anymore.

It was a good move not to go to work, at all. Your boyfriend and parents were right about the rain. Sometimes, we don't need announcements such as this to decide not to get out of the house. If we see that its really impossible to get to our destinations, better, to just stay at home.

Get ready and be prepared for any kind of emergencies. I still think that none of the friends from Philippine are not available now and they may be trying to be more safer situations. Anyway, take care and hope that rains will stop soon and thing will turn to normal shortly. Take care and be alert.

Yes, some of the photographis indcate it is so horrible over there and some places people are really troubled in waters. People may be unwilling to move and the reason for the same is genuine because they may lose everything, if they are ready to leave the place and there is no guarantee that they will get back their belongings intact. I think they judge themseves that they can manage even if they are at homes surrounded with water. Hope everything will get resolved soon. How is the rains there now, it is under control and is the water is still going up or getting washed out? Please take care...

Yes, I really do hope there will be no more casualties. People's lives are more important than losing their homes and possessions. There were some people who refused to evacuate their houses because they don't want to leave their things, and they feel safer inside, even with waist high water levels.

It's still raining in the northern part of the country, and some places are still flooded. The dam water level has gone a bit down, which is a good sign. But, I think it'll take a few more days for the flood to dry up.

The suspension of work in private offices was a welcome announcement. However, even if there was no suspension, it would be quite difficult to report for work because of the flooded main streets which are impassable even for big buses. The scene in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces is almost similar to the Ondoy days. This time it is different since streets which used to be free from floods have suffered from waist-high waters. Call centers in Metro Manila are included in the work suspension so Cebu will perhaps suffer from the brunt of the emergency. The rains are still heavy but hopefully not as bad as last night. Classes remain suspended and government offices but I think private offices will be back to work tomorrow.

So this is really worse than Ondoy. That just means, we haven't learned from past experiences. I think the government really has to wake up now and start doing major projects to relieve these flood-prone areas of the ocassional misery. This will just get worse, in time, if they don't do anything.

Yes that is rare thing that government decided to suspend work even in private sector. But I am glad they decided this since I know many of the workers may be in such a dire situation travelling from their home to work.

Hah, maybe Pinoy just woke-up late today. maybe he stayed late at night playing his favorite PSP game. Since last night, it is already raining very heavy, and he should already suspend work before 4 am today. I'm one of the many Filipinos who comes to work and had to endure the heavy rain just to get to my company. I should not have come to work but because there is no suspension this morning, I have no choice.

They probably have to make sure they have all the reasons to suspend work, because of course, there's a lot at stake at not letting people go to work. Business owner may not like the announcement, and he'll lose their support. Private sectors can still insist for their employees to work, provided that they can ensure their safety and give additional pay.

Good luck to your husband and his colleagues in Cebu. Probably the calls form Mnaila will be transferred to the nearby provinces to make sure that the volume will be accommodated. I hope the company will give your husband a good rest after this is over.

I'm sure the Cebu centers will be flooded too --- not with water, but with calls that are supposedly going to Manila. He'll have a very busy day, today, and perhaps the whole week.

It really is some bad weather in the northern part of the country. Ironically, here, where I am, the weather is very fine. No rain, and not too hot. But, it's hard to be happy about the good weather, when other Filipinos are suffering from the heavy rains and flood.

It's about time, but the latest news is the ordinance announced excludes those who works in BPO, so they still have to report to work despite the weather. I don't know why the ordinance is selective, but then the BPOs cater to businesses outside the country which are still currently in full operations.
