Is cooking an art?

I am sure it is. And it is not only an art as taste goes, but I firmly believe that part of the pleasure you get when you eat comes from looking at a nice dish and a well set table. Many times I take pictures of the dishes I make, when they come out as I want them too. Other times I take pictures of dishes in restaurants where I go. It inspires me to make the most of my cooking abilities and my friends are happy to eat my meals while we talk over a bottle of good chilean wine. Do you take pains to make your food look nice, specially when there`s company? Share.

We can make cooking an art, as we have all these colorful vegetables and fruits and we can arrange them in so many ways. What if all food were the same color and taste? We would survive, but the eating would not be the same pleasure. Or if we human beings had planned a fruit factory? It would probably cause a lot of pollution and smell terrible and make a lot of noise... Instead, we have great fruit "factories" - trees - who clean the air, produce delicious fruits that have the nourishment we need and makes us healthy and add colors and beauty to our meals and smell good too. Our Creator, who made all these beautiful things that grow silently, not making any noise, and add pleasure to our life, is the greatest artist. We can see His works of art everywhere if we meditate on them. Yes, we have been created with the ability to be creative and artistic. That would not be necessary if we had evolved, would it? So the thanks should go to the Creator who planned it all so wonderfully.. Let's enjoy the beauty in our food!!

Hot chiles in my terrace - I plant beautiful veggies in containers and in the ground.
You have been very poetic, friend! I not only enjoy the different food placed on a plate, but I love the beauty of my veggies in the garden.

Hi,marguicha First, I must tell you I agree to you opinion that the cooking is an art. When I was a boy, I'd like all food that my mother cooked. One reason is our family very poor when I was a little boy, another reason is my mother has good cooking skill. Now, I marriaged, I am able to cook myself for our family and I like cooking very much. Let's talk about Chinese food. We knew, it has different tastes when we cut the vegetables into different types, for example, dices, quarters, gores, slices, cubes, and so on. And different people make different dinners when they use the same food ingredients and the same cooking pan. Different pan , different fire, different water, and different mood all effects the quality of the food. So I think, cooking is absolutely an art! If someone has different opinions, we can discuss this topic. Ulanhad, from China.

hi marguicha, yes you are right, cooking also art,but i do not say it is art other than gods gift, all does not cook good food, the tastes differ from hand to hand and according to the mixing of the items, the same food made by different people may have different tastes, that's why hotel people are paying high salaries for their best cooks, have a nice day.

I think that cooking is something that everyone must learn to do. I was very happy some days ago when one of my eldest grandsons asked me to teach him to make sushi. I did and in exchange he is fixing my old computer.

A lot of people consider food to be an art me? All I can do is try but I love it when I cook something and the plate I make for my husband comes out really pretty and he has a great big smile on his face l.o.l. But true And I like to make the salad all pretty and if I make tacos I love to try and get them to look like the ones from the restaraunt

I think cooking is really an art. It will need someone's crative mind to make new dishes and make the plating more palatable to the eaters. When there are occassions in out house, I try my best to make the design good.

THe word Appetizer meant that it will give you more appetite. Those must be yummy, small, colorful and beautiful. With slads, entrees and everything you eat, it must be the same.

If you saw (or maybe have seen ?) the movie named Ratatouille , then you know food is really an art. When You taste the food , you can feel the flavors of the ingredients , you also feel special flavors that comes from the way the food was prepared. Making food takes some creativity if you make something new or innovative, especially in the high levels like in "master chef" TV program. You get some ingredients and you need to make a good meal that will impress the judges. Ummmm...well , preparing food is like playing a piano or painting : you have some materials you can work with and you have many different things you can do with them :)

That movie is about a cute rat that gets inspiration from human beings and he likes cooking. The rat steals a cook book from a chef and starts learning how to cook. One day the rat gets to know a poor man that may own a restaurant in the future but only if he cooks good. The rat helps the man to cook in the restaurant and they have many adventures like hiding , cooking , running away. The rat has to hide from the main chef because of zero tolerance towards rats in restaurants O.o... The rat finds a funny way of how to control the poor man with cooking and hides under his hat. One of the scenes in that movie has a dialogue between that rat and his friend (another rat) and he shows his friend how flavors are a rich and colorful world. He teaches his friend to imagine shapes and colors while tasting the food and sensing the flavors. That movie is for a whole family : kids and parents.

If I am in a mood, I will try to make the dish look very tempting to eat. Otherwise just finish making and set on table. But cooking is for sure an art and can get us good friends and good name too.

A stew with fried eggplats on the side. - I like the adition of fried eggplant or zuchinni. I feel the dish looks nicer and there´s always the extra helping of veggies.
I have learned lately some very easy ways of adding a touch of class to my main dishes. Fried green tomatoes or eggplants or zuchinni really make a difference if you put 2 rounds on the dish at one side.

Yes cooking is indeed an ancient art. Art is not only in making your favorite food on the table, the preparation of everything in the recipe and cooking it is an art itself. I have a friend who is a chef and I enjoy helping him prepare his secret recipes. Of course I never get to know how he mixes some of it, but I find it fun doing all the slicing and cutting for him whenever there is an occasion in our district and he is the head chef. He specializes in Italian and Chinese dishes. Gee, now I'm hungry.

I have learned a lot about dishing the food so it`s beautiful by searching online and by watching TV shows about cooking. They make it sound easier than it is, but finally you start getting some very nice foods set on the table. And as far as I know, a beautiful dish is more appealing for the person who eats it.

Hi Marg, indeed cooking is like an art. One of my uncles had gone to the university of culinary just to become a good chef. I had learned to cook some dishes from him. He really is making me feel amazed at how he able to cook from scratch and turned them into some delicious and beautifully decorated dishes. Although it looks simple but i think i am unable to make my dishes as nice as his one since i haven't learned my cooking lesson in depth yet. But, i will always trying to cook the best i can, when i want to serve my friends or relatives.

A n ice device to create round shapped scoops - Fruit scoops can be used to decorate fruit salads or even just serve the fruit as round scoops.
Yes,cooking is indeed an art. Presentation can make any dish however bland, tasty! My forte is salads and deserts. I have a device known as melon baller which I use for making round shaped scoops from fruits specially mango and melon. Boiled beetroot scoops when placed on salads give them a nice look. I also create my own recipes which invariably turn out yummy!

Yes I believe it is an art for some. For those who try to make their food look good and taste good then it is an art. I can't see myself doing this because for me its just about eating it. As soon as its done all I care about is that it tastes good and that I'm hungry!

There you go then. That's a different way to look at food than I do. Perhaps if I were exposed to more food that is also made to look pretty then it would be that way. Usually I am just given a plate of food and it isn't all that special but it will fill my belly.

To me, cooking is very much an art. The challenge is getting food to look appetizing as well as be that way. This can involve color, strategic placing of food, and one's own artistic design in manipulation of food. I have to get a good impression of food I make for company and my family as well.

I love to cook and have been cooking for a long time. But we can always learn and taking pictures when I go to good restaurants help me making my dishes more beautiful. I cannot eat something that doesn`t look appetizing, even if it tastes good. I will not put too much food on a dish either: I prefer to offer a second helping.

Yes, cooking is indeed an art. Of course, we can always cook delicious dishes but how you present them, also matters a lot. A well presented food is better appreciated and in fact presentation will also create a big impact on our appetite. That is why, it is also important to serve them well and not only that, your friends will surely be amazed by the way your serve it.

When I was starting to learn how to cook, I thought it only mattered that the food was good and that you took care not to spill part of the food. Now I learn a little every day how to make a dish better presented. And it does make a difference.

It has evolved to be, originally the idea is just to feed people, then to taste good, but now as I watch these culinary shows, they really take as much time as making the food taste wonderful as it looks visually appealing. It make sense, because our eyes would be the first to judge the food and will try the food if it looks good. But I believe if you are just trying to feed people, and not impress judges, tasting better benefits more than looking better.

I thought once that it would be very difficult to make a dish look beautiful. But now I can see that although my dishes are not as elegnt as the ones made by chefs, they look very good looking nevertheless. I have looked at nice looking dishes in the web and the thing in common is that the amount of food is not too big (it`s better to offer second helpings) and most dishes have the different ingredients in different parts of the dish.

I started with the passion for eating. But I realised soon that I didn`t care for fast food. I like delicacies, but they are only to be had at expensive restaurants that I cannot afford. So I started to cook. I learn a bit every day. Sometimes things work out fine, sometimes they don`t.
