My laptop keeps on restarting. It manages to boot into windows but only for a minute or so. I've also tries booting in BIOS, it's still the same so I'm pretty sure it's not a virus infection. Is there a way to diagnose the hardware when it's not booting? I'm thinking it's the cpu or my motherboard has gone kaput. Help!

if your pc keeps on restarting while you are in bios, you may want to check if there is an overheating issue. check your cpu fan if it still well. most bios can monitor cpu fan speed and cpu temperature as well. a faulty ram can also render error that doesn't even seems to be a ram issue. if you have two piece of ram, try using 1 at a time first. you may also want to reset your bios to factory while troubleshooting. to do this, make sure your power is unplugged and then remove your mobo battery. wait for about 20sec before putting it back so all power is drained from capacitors. good luck.

Yes it boots in bios for a few minutes, that is. I just checked my bios but it's not showing any cpu temp or any hardware data except the drive and the memory connected to it. You think its safe to venture in upgrading the bios? I'm afraid to ruin the bios if the computer restarts during the flashing part.

Surely this is a hardware issue, better let a computer expert check the laptop, open it manually. Or you can have it return and be check in a service center.. :)

Bit the bullet and took it apart yesterday. It doesn't have warranty anymore so I figured, might as well learn something from it.

Did you try repairing windows using the bootable CD? If its not the hardware then it may be your windows that is causing the problem.

Tried bootable ubuntu. Yes it still restarts after a few minutes. According to the technician, it's either the motherboard or the cpu that is busted. Either way my pocket is looking at a bleak future.

I can't use a hardware monitor to see if my cpu has a problem. Although, when I opened the laptop, the fan won't turn on when I hit the power button. Is that normal?

Yes hes right but it seems more cpu related than mobo like you might be having an overheating problem or something!?

I actually had this problem a couple of weeks ago. What you can do is that when you have (at least) a 1 GB jump drive, Install Hiren's BootCD. There are instructions on how to do this on YouTube as well. What I did after installing a mini Windows OS into my jump drive was that I started my computer on the USB, and it has a couple if files compiled with it-- I used the Hard Drive scanner and partition cleaning wizard to clean out my original drive. TL;DR.. Just get Hiren's BootCD and follow the instructions on YouTube to fix your computer.

the lady mentioned that she is restarting on BIOS therefore it is not an OS issue.

Yes you can check for your system memory if there is any RAM problem. If you are windows then its called windows memory diagonostic tools. To follow up this http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2684679.aspx if using linux then use your installation CD and use memory diagnostic tool available in the CD. If you can't find solution to this use SAFE mode if available then try to restore it. Or If it still don't work reinstall your operating system and install a good anti- virus and update your system regularly.

Tried going through a memory diagnostic but it restarts after a while---not even finishing 20% of the diagnostics.

My computer only boots when it knows I'm going to mylot. Oh wait that is me when it comes to waking up. Tried swapping a verified-in-good-working-condition memory module. Still rebooting.

If you cannot boot your PC then how come you are here at mylot. Are you using any others pc. if its not finishing 20% then you have to replace your RAM with a new one. Or try using only one at a time if you have more than one ram, and try may be there is certain fault with the ram only. Try one ram do memory diagnostics and then another ram. If fails try re installing your OS. If fails then buy a new RAM.
