How have you overcame your fears?

I had an intense trepidation for public-speaking / Presentations. Whenever I hear the words, Mandatory, meeting / presentation, and a specific time, I automatically get cold sweat. Through experience, they are a little bit more comforting, but the one thing I still have is the cold sweat dripping onto my neck. Deep breaths have not helped me, and using my imagination won't help either. If you have, what was your fear and how have you overcome this fear?

You mentioned my fear in your opening, which is public speaking, i guess many people have this fear too. To be exact, i have not really overcome this fear totally and i still get the jitters whenever i am forced to do presentations in front of a huge audience. But there was improvements since i was younger. I remembered when i was younger, i was so nervous, or rather fearful that i was not even able to speak properly, not to say fluently. Eye contact was also a big problem for me and i will feel cold throughout my whole body, especially in air conditioned room. However as i grow older, the fear somehow became of lower altitude perhaps due to the fact that i have been through more of these experiences. I did not really do anything to overcome it just that it naturally improve when i do it more often and it prove to me that fearing it does not makes any difference. Now i can at least speak normally with occasion slips and eye contact can be done despite being uncomfortable.

Presentations feel like a plot to me. Each passing day I get more nervous because I'm never sure whether my work is great, and I end up sweating because everyone else seems to be happy to present and I'm the outcast of the group. Once I do my speech however, for the most part it's not really that badly. I stop sweating and just "wing" it. Thankfully, I end up getting what I wanted as for feedback and gladly sit down for my part. :)

Dear mcCreeper, Dont worry most of the people are afraid of public , and yes there is s solution you need to be more involve into some public activity and you should overcome the thing that how will people thing that if I do like this and all that stuff you need to act freely in public and should not get nervous because of new people .. Get yourself involved into some public activity that all i can say .. Happy Mylotting ..

That's the odd part.. I am in public activities. I go to the library in our school to peer-tutor students when they need help with their homework, I go to the movies and chat with my buddies, usual stuff. Sometimes a bit of community service because it's required in our high school for graduation.. But when that "Assignment" is planted on my feet, I cringe and try to do what I can, but just the idea of people blankly stare at you is scary.. :/

hi mccreeper I am now 85 a nd still have that awful fear of speaking in front of a crowd of people. I even tried to imagine them sitting there in their undies but it never helped me at all.I have been told if you really really prepare your paper before time you will be better able to give the presentations.try talking to a mirror and making pauses to emphasize things. but I still cannot do it. but perhaps you can gain s ome ideas from me anyway.

Haha, imagining people in their undies doesn't really help.. It only makes things more uncomfortable for me (xD) I guess I haven't really prepared some parts, but that's what I do need to practice on I guess =) I think one idea that has worked during my experiences on public speaking is that while you're doing it, "Don't Think"? would help. One example being that while speaking about how apples are better than bananas, don't think about that one time you might have eaten something that was too much for your stomach.. It usually helps me because then I could focus on my topic even more.

I personally don't like standing off of tall buildings.. I'm tall myself, but when I'm at the top of a playground or something of the similar, I can't simply just jump off.. I don't want to risk hurting myself in the process.. :/

I am a God-fearing person. For some, they don't have fearful act to something. But I am sure, they used their mask to hide the real feeling fearful. It is not bad to be this kind of attitude, they need to be strong.

Same as for me. I as well has a fear in public speaking and in facing a huge crowd. My knees used to tremble and i stammer alot everytime I get to speak in front of people. It's like everything that is in your head gets phased out, that you no longer could say anything at all. I guess up until now, I could say that I still have that fear, it's one thing that I really haven't overcome at all. Cause no matter how hard I tried to overcome it, it still keeps coming back.

I can't say the same, but public speaking would always make me sweat. I guess all the thinking about the work in total that I have to accomplish as well as preparing for the speech is too much, because as soon as I make it into the class, my clothes are getting close to being soaked from all the sweat. :/

I am terribly afraid of heights.. and of crowds. Unfortunately I have never overcome either of these things.. My husband helps me though if I need to be up on a ladder....and through crowded places as well.

Statistics says that one of the thing people fear about their job is doing a public speaking. My job requires public speaking every now and then. Reporting, meeting presentations, project proposal and results requires me to stand in front of 5 or more people and speak. During my earlier years, I really fear this scenario. People will surely know that I am nervous by the way I speak. but as we matured in our job, we learned to manage our fear of public speaking. And eventually learned to control it and use it to our advantage. Now, though the fear, the nervousness and stage fright is always there, I had learned to hide it. And now, people cannot distinguish anymore if I am nervous or not.

It is self-respect that will help to get over this fear. If you are knowledgeable, informed of the issues well that you are going to talk about and have good connections with people you will have no difficulty with public speak and etc.

I had fear of public speaking while I was in school. They were giving us topics to speak on and some of them I had no interest in. Lack of confidence on the matter which you are speaking compounds your fears. After graduation I had opportunities to speak on the things I was passionate about and my fears subsided. So being said, confidence will aid you in conquering your fears. All the imagination in the world won't give you knowledge that confidence gives you. Take those deep breathes to help focus yourself. Soon you will find yourself face to face with those fears and wondering what you had to fear in the first place.
