Rainy Day Miracle on EDSA - Would You Do The Same?

Philippines
August 14, 2012 10:17pm CST
This story was posted (together with a video) on the Facebook page of a certain Lyndon Santos, about one rainy Monday morning when a young woman, who seems to be on her way to work, stopped, took off her jacket, and clothe a young naked child on the street. If you're in a hurry like her and saw the child, would you do the same? Would I do the same? I felt so ashamed after reading the post since I'm always in a hurry and most probably would not even notice the child. I think this is a wake-up call for me. God bless that woman for making time to help others. It also reminded me of this quotation from Mother Teresa - "Not all of us can do great things but we can do small things with great love."

I have seen this on the news a month ago, I think. Although, I cannot say that I would do the same, after reading the said news, I know that I will do something for someone who would be in need of help should the same situation arise. Personally, I admire that woman for doing such a good samaritan act, not everyone will do the same.

I know what you mean, sometimes we need to be reminded about these things as we gotten use to seeing street children that eventually learn to ignore their existence. Thanks for sharing and have a nice day :)

Hi Ellen, yeah I agree that this is a wake-up call and it'll be sad if one can't see as that. Thanks for your response :)

I'm so touched by the story. We seldom see people like that. Just like you, I'd probably not notice the naked child since it is a normal scenario on the streets. But if that child calls my attention and asks for my jacket I'm willing to give it away.

Thanks for sharing.. I will most likely won't notice it too as I'm always in a hurry. But If someone asks for my help, especially children, I would gladly do what I can to help. And I think others will likewise do the same (hopefully :))

Humans are naturally loving and kind, it comes from within (from what I've read) ^_^ however, there's a lot of unavoidable distractions that we regularly meet everyday that prevents us to see opportunities to help other people especially kids. :(

I think I will overlook that child because in EDSA there are lots of street children it's like they're every where. Even if you'll talk to them to go home that streets are dangerous they still want to roam around EDSA begging for some food or penny. Even on a running vehicle like jeepneys children will just hop there to beg for some money or food. I always say to them that the money that people give them is not enough if they get an accident while hopping on every jeepney's. But we can't blame them that's the easiest ways for them to get some food.

I agree, they seem to be everywhere :( to the point that you get use to them and eventually learn ignore their existence. As for the children who hops on jeepneys, I wish some government agency would set out an active campaign as this is very dangerous and I hope that the govt. would act on it before someone gets hurt or worst get killed :(.

I really touch about this story. Me, I can't really assure that I can do the same what she did. But it reminds me that we have to do something to give some help to others when they need.

If given the opportunity and sensing it I'm sure you'll help too, it's just natural for us Filipinos to be caring especially for kids. The only question is will you be able to recognize the opportunity in a very busy world that we live in. :( Thanks for sharing!

God bless her more. Even if the video was just 36 seconds, I can say that I was moved. I find it really extraordinary. If I'm in her situation, I think I would do the same to give her my coat or to give her something to cover her body. But maybe if she was dressed and chilling, I'll be honest that I might ignore her and just keep walking for the fact that it was raining. This will be the truth. But after I saw the video, I come to think that I should be more aware of my surroundings because there might be another person who needs my help. How about the others? Would you do the same? I hope you will. :)

You know the thing that keeps on bugging me is the fact that it happened in a place where I frequently pass by - along EDSA at the side of GMA Channel 7 perimeter wall going to MRT GMA Kamuning Station. Who knew if I was one of the many who did nothing to help in similar situations? :(

I would have probably just walk by. I will be torn to helping the child or not cause you know our world today, criminals are using children as bait so they can do harm onto others.

Oh my... your post reminded me of a news a long time ago, when carnappers used children as bait to unsuspecting car owners. :(

I would do the same. As i've said from the previous question, my ultimate goal in life is to be a catalyst of change. so as a catalyst of change i need to start from we thought simple and unmindful things.

I think if given the chance most people will naturally help other people in need or else they would feel bad about it later on. thanks for sharing :)

Sadly, I think I would not have even notice the child. When I'm in a hurry i do not pretty much observe anything around me. Still that is sad.

Yeah me too.. I'm pretty sure that would happen to me too as I'm always in a hurry as in almost brisk-walking each time I'm walking on the streets. :(

I haven't heard this story yet until you posted this one. Honestly, I feel so guilty because most of the time, I see naked kids roaming the streets where I usually pass by. And when I am riding a public transportation most especially jeepney, some kids (ages 4-5) beg for money and I do not give them even just a coin, or even my attention. I salute that woman! I hope that more people will follow her footsteps.

I also don't give alms to children who begs inside jeepneys because it will just encourage them to do it again and again as long as they were able to get money and it's just not safe for them to keep doing it.

To be honest I don't Know is the answer, sometimes if I saw a child or a beggar on the street I never hesitate to give a coin. Until, one day the same child caught my attention inhaling a solvent inside a plastic.

I remember when I rode a taxi cab and when we passed by a squatters area where I saw a couple of children playing with a sort of mettalic clay while sniffing it repeatedly, the driver told me that it was actually a roof sealant, use as an alternative to solvents.. I wonder why nobody's taking these children off the streets and sending them to rehab or something.

This is really touching. This is like a modern "a good samaritan" and I am optimistic that we still have this selflessness amongst us.

I have also watched this video. I was very touched as it would really be hard for us to stop before doing such a noble act of kindness. Personally, it reminds me of stopping for a moment and have a time for reflection and simple acts of kindness toward other people.:)

That woman (God Bless her!) made me realize that I have to slow down and take time to really see what's going on around me or else I will miss the opportunity to help other people in need. :(
