What happened at school today?

When Paul got home from school, I was really excited to hear about his day. He started kindergarten today and I knew that he was going to be in a class where he didn't know any of his classmates.
I ask him what happened at school and he informs me "I had a hamburger, baked beans, oranges, Jello with whipped cream and blue drink that tastes like cotton candy." So, I know all about what he ate, but I don't know anything else about his day at school.
It does turn out that he does kind of know two of his classmates as this set of twins used to be in my niece's daycare and they've been to several birthday parties together. I asked him about the twins after my brother informed me of the fact that they went to his school and were in Spanish Immersion as well. Paul tells me, yes there are twins in my class, their names are Carliya and Delicious. I was like Delicious?? He said, her first name is Deli and her last name is Licious. Too funny, the little girl's actual name is Gabby and their last name is most definitely not Licious.
Any new school year stories that you would like to share? Are there any other parents out there that have had this hard of a time getting information out of their kids about their day at school? Oh, I do know that he at least enjoyed it because he said he couldn't wait to go back tomorrow.

That is so cute. I love those kinds of things. I hope you will write in a scrapbook or memory book somewhere. Kids are so adorable sometimes with what they come up with.
My son used to say, when I asked him what happened in school today? He responded with "nothing". Then later at bed time, he would start telling me EVERYTHING that went on during his day. By then I was too tired to listen.
Funny what memories these discussions bring up.

The scrapbook thing is something that I will definitely be doing. I've been keeping a scrapbook for my kids since Paul was born and I've got hundreds of pages made for them.
In fact, yesterday my brother had to call me and ask me if I took him to school for his first day because the only picture that I posted on facebook was of him in front of the house before we left for school. I'm saving the actual pictures at school to go on facebook until I've actually scrapped them. I do digital scrapbooking and share all of my pages on facebook.

Hee hee! Yah, it gets hard to get any information out of the kids - especially about school! I have to continually ask questions that are not yes or no answers to get my daughter to talk. Half the time she'll say she doesn't remember (oh yes she does!). Most of the time she will tell me who she played with and what they played - but not about what they all did in the classroom! I guess that's why all of us parents are just chatting outside the classrooms in the mornings - we're all comparing notes - ha ha!

I'm sure that he will start to talk about it eventually, but for right now, I think it is just all so new to him and it is something that he is going to have to get used to. What I really can't wait for is him to start to teach me more Spanish than I already know. You see, in his class, their science and math will all be in Spanish and their reading and writing and social studies will all be in English.

So far, getting up has been our biggest struggle with Paul. He's never been in daycare and we've pretty much always had an open schedule so this is the first time in his life that he is having to wake up before he is really ready to be out of bed.

It's like pulling teeth to get my little granddaughter to tell you anything about school. Here we don't start until after Labor Day so she hasn't started second grade yet....except she knows that her teachers name is the same as her aunt who is also a teacher but last taught in Germany.

That is one of the things that I really don't like about the schools around here is that they start back so early. However, it is good to see that he seems to like school so far. Now with my daughter, she is already asking that I give her permission to stay home from school tomorrow because their class has to practice standing in line and being quiet for ten minutes tomorrow during their recess time and she said it will make her back hurt (she does have a point since she has whiplash from our car accident), but that is not reason enough for her to stay home from school.

I thought that I was going to be okay and not cry, but I did. This was when I went back by his classroom to peek in on him after I'd accompanied Kathryn to her classroom and he didn't even notice me. He was hard at work on drawing a picture.

My youngest son did the same thing last year when he went to kindergarten. He also wouldn't say anything that happened at school.
I remember kidding and asking him about how his teacher was. But instead of saying the name of his kindergarten teacher (which I knew), I would purposely ask him how his pre-school teacher was.
He would have a face, as if to say 'you don't know much dad!', and say that he has a new teacher already. And then we'd have a good laugh.
I kept doing this for weeks!

Hey at least doing that with your son was a good way for you bond with him. I really can't wait for them to kick in and really start learning because I know it is going to exciting for him. Not only will he get to learn to read and write really well, he is also going to be learning a whole new language.

I always got the same stuff from my kids.. what they ate for lunch, unless something major happened. One day I went to pick my youngest up from daycare and he said that a dinosaur had come to school that day and the dinosaur didn't eat him! After the teachers and I stopped laughing they told me some reptiles had come to visit and one of them was an iguana which my son kept thinking was a dinosaur.
The thing is, not a whole lot happens most days, especially the first day. They were probably told about rules, introduced themselves, maybe played a game or two. Nothing exciting enough to report, but at the same time perhaps a bit overwhelming.

I do think that there really isn't much that is exciting that happens on the first day of school. However, I've rarely left him with a babysitter that isn't related to us and he's never been to preschool so I thought that he might have a lot to talk about.
Now I really shocked him today when he got off the bus and I asked him about his knee. You see, he fell on the playground and scraped his knee and the teachers are required to let the parents know when something like that happens. All he had done was re-opened an old scab, but still they had to let us know.
