Paper bags

Yesterday, we went to a known shoping mall here in our country. It was wednesday and they are using paper bags in packaging what you shopped. they do it every wednesday to help save the environment. However, I just thought that what if they used to switch their schedule of using paper bags. Instead of doing this every wednesday, why not try to do this daily and they will only used plastic bags during wednesday. Furthermore, there are only few people shopped during this day compared to weekends. I know that doing this once a week can make a big help in saving the environment but why not try to do this every day. What are your thought about this other mylotters?

Some malls here in Metro Manila (and other some parts in Philippines) already are very strict in using paper bags everyday. I think some of the malls chose to do this once a week to let the buyers know they are now changing from plastic to paper bags. And I think it's really great that malls are using paper bags but I hope that they also replace the trees that were used to make their paper bags. :)

I think in Metro Manila it is strictly enforced since the municipality that covers them already passed an ordinance about prohibition of use of plastics. Furthermore, Malls should already increase the day of their use of paper bags because this has run already for years. Adding additional day especially during the weekends can really make a great impact in the environment. Just like what you said, replacing trees is a must too. Even some ares are already using paperbags, they should consider the source of the said packaging materials. It will be better if these paper bags comes from a recycled materials.

That is one of the slogan of the said mall, MOB or my own bag. Which means that they will bring their own bag when shopping in malls.

and i think malls should also implement "bring your own shopping bag" that way, we can also save using more paper bags.

Well that may work but to say it is more environmental is not totally true since paper is still coming from trees and I think the reason why plastic bags were used instead of the paper was because it means destroying more forest land to produce more paper for this purpose. We all know we are having problems with logging industry in our place because our forest lands are fast depleting already. I would pretty much prefer the cloth bags they call as eco bag. They can be reused than that of the paper bag they use. Besides you only will have to purchase once and reuse it over and over again. As for the paper bags I really am not that comfortable since you are just transferring from one problem to another.

That will be a great option, eco bags. However, when someone forget to bring the ecobag, they just bought another one. Is this happens everytime they went to the mall, this will still end of having many ecobags in their homes ending it in trash too. But by usign paperbags daily, this will keep in shopper's mind to bring ecobags everytime they will go in malls and other shopping centers. Sometimes, even they will cut trees because of the paper, it is renewable and can be replaced. Furthermore, recycling papers to be made into paper bags is a great way to save the environment.

I just hope that scientists can develop a variety of trees that will grow in short time. Let's say they can have trees that will fully grown in 5 years. While waiting for the trees to grow, recycling of paper can be done. Furthermore, having rule or cutting single tree must be replaced by planting 10 trees.

Well that is something we should be looking forward to then. But to date there is no biotechnology that could hasten trees to grow. I know there is a variety of tree that grows faster and can be use for paper production. I just do not know what variety was it.

I really think everyone should switch to using paper bags instead of the plastic bags as plastic bags are harmful... but then paper bags i guess are expensive thats why they rarely use it bt i wish they use those re usable paper bags.. i saw some in SM, its in color blue..

Yes, plastic bags can be also considered as reusable ones. But it will really need great responsibilities. In our house, we tried to keep the plastics used in groceries and use them in other purpose.

there are reusable eco bags sold in malls, however, responsible use of the said bags are stll to be consider. Most people that forget to bring the ecobags will just buy another set whenever they go shopping. In turn, the ecobags are being accumulated in tehir homes. In the long run, it will go to trash too. Using ecobag one at a time is another best way to help the environment.

Yeah, I cannot stand those plastic bags. The ones they have here are always very thin; they break easily and they can only hold few things anyway... When I grew up, grocery stores used brown paper bags back then. They were great, especially the ones with handles. Now, I just bring my own recyclable jute bags whenever I go shopping.

Yes, it is true, plastic bags could not be recycled because it can easily torn out. Furthermore, they are claiming that it is biobegradable but still, it need more years to decompose the said plastic. When I was stilla kid, baskets made of rattan are really used by many in the market, but now they much prefer using plastics. Just like you, I bought ecobags from them about three pieces and I used this not only in the shopping in mall but also when going to the market.

Here in Hyderabad India, most of the shopping malls has stopped giving free plastic bags. Either we have to carry our own bag or if don't carry we have to buy those bags, its not free anymore. Even small shops ask for our own bag. Sometime its chaotic because we can't carry bag all the time but in the long run it actually curb our habit of using the plastic bag indiscriminately. Now for weekend grocery shopping people does carry there own bag and hence to some extent it has restricted the use of plastic bags.

Iluvusabado, you are right bringing bayons in malls looks weird, ecobags are really better. I just hope that there are also stylish bayong that can be brought at malls and can be used in shopping. Prabim, goos that there are already ordinances about the use of plastic bags. Furthermore, it is good that bringing ecobags during weekends because of restiriction in use of plastic bags is really good move. I just hope that malls will move their "bring your own bag" movement during weekends and not on weekdays.

Here in our town, there's a total ban of plastic bags. Even the big malls here have opted for paper wrappers and reusable bags. Even the groceries just utilize their own product carton boxes to pack really heavy grocery items. And just this series of rains, our place didn't get flooded when it used to be a little lake with just a strong rain for a few hours. It does help in keeping the drainages free-flowing.

Good for you that your province has been implementing the use of paper packaging materials. Just what I noticed yesterday, the grocery is using paper bags and cartons for the heavy materials, but when we buy some stuffs outside the grocery, still inside the mall, they still uses plastic as packaging materials. I just hope that when they implement the day for paper bags, it will include all the stalls in the mall.

I think paper bags are not environment-friendly, either, like plasstic bags. If people want to save the environment, they shouldn't use the disposable bags. Using reusable bags is helpful. In my city , the big mall charges for the bags, so every time I go to the mall, I always remember bringing a bag with me. Thanks for sharing, have a nice day!

You got a point in there, but responsibility in using ecobags or reusable bags is really needed. People must keep in mind to use reusable bags one at a time only since there are some that will keep on buying reusable bags everytime they went shopping ending up accumulation in their home ending into trash too. I think use of plastic, paper or even reusable bags must have a great responsibility. Good day!

i don't think that paper bags really save the environment much because paper comes from trees unless these bags are recycled from other bags. as for plastic bags, most stores here where i live have a 5 cent tax on plastic bags. they encourage you to bring cloth bags to the store for shopping.

You are right, using paper bags must also consider the main source of raw materials in making such packaging materials. Recycling paper is the best way to produce one and save the environment at the same time. Using cloth bags is another option but be sure to have one bag at a time policy.

i used to shop at Trader Joes where they do not use plastic and the damned paper bags would invariably tear just in the two long blocks I had to walk and with a quad cane yet. so juggling food breaking out of the paper bag was the p itts as I had to climb a mini hill to get to my apartment and me with one leg in a brace too. so grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr to paper sacks give me plastic any time as I recycle all plastic stuff any way.[

Plastic an be just as bad. The best for the environment and for keeping groceries safe is cloth bags. If they start to tear you can sew them right up and they tend to hold more, keep things more insulated. Though with paper sacks it's usually the handles that break or the bottom corners that break first. With plastic it's holes here or there because of pointy product boxes. As a cashier I try to keep that in mind, though we really aren't supposed to double bags unless requested. I have one customer, she asks for paper inside of plastic. I think it's to keep things from leaking as well as a second bag just in case things break.

Hatley, one of the best thing to do is to bring reusable cloth bags. someCowgirl is right, when you noticed that it will starts to tear, you can repair it and use it again.

Oh, that's a good idea. We have to get rid of those plastic bags. We experience flood because of those plastics. We always have to clean our drainage. If we are going to use paper bags, we can minimize the use of plastic bags. Happy myLotting!

yes, but we have to consider the production of papers too. Source in making papers aer also need to consider. Trees are the most common source of the said packaging material.

I am proud to say that in our city,Pasig,we use paper bags everyday! Even in fast food chains like Jollibee or McDonalds, they already use paper bags for take out orders. And I'm happy to say too that in our city, garbage collection is organized. Biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes should be separated and they are being collected every other day. For instance, today, the garbage collector will get all the non-biodegradable wastes and tomorrow, they will get the biodegradable ones. I am proud to say that our Mayor is doing his best to make our city clean and helps with the world. I wish almost all cities will patronized paper bags, this will for sure lessen the floodings in our country.

Megamall have bring your own bag every Monday and Wednesday so plastic bags in supermarket is not allowed but you can buy one if you don't have ecobags with you. I guess it is their step towards zero plastic bags in the mall in the future. Plastics are started to eliminate in some areas too. Paper bags is good but I think ecobags would be better. We really have to dispose wastes especially plastics to avoid bad effects in the future.

It will be a good news that Megamall uses paperbags for two days already. for me it will be great if these days are scheduled during the weekends since there are more shoppers during those days compared to weekdays. You are right, these are steps in zero-plastic use. I just hope that other branches of SM will implement 2-day use pf paper bags too.

Here in my city the schedule of paper bags was every Friday, Saturday and Sunday based city ordinance but some establishments are excuse to this policy especially supermarket since they have different schedule in paper bags. Also some supermarket offering a discounts or double points in their shopping card if you bring your own environmental shopping bags that honor by the supermarket or groceries. I think your right better to use paper bags daily since its a very good way to help the environment.

It is a good idea. I forced myself to recycle all paper. The idea is that the breaking paper into small pieces to get useful material. An interesting use would be as a paper-crete combination (paper and cement). It is possible that the smaller pieces of Styrofoam are mixed in that combination. So, for some construction work be able create interesting parts (house building?). It is important to store carbon somewhere for a long time. If the waste ends up in a power plant that burned it, it did not accomplish anything.

that will be a great idea. I heard that some styrofoam are being mixed with cement and can be used as construction materials. I also heard that these are much stornger than using a cement-based hollow blocks. One of my idea in recycling paper is by making use of it instead of buying a new cork boards.

This is quite an interesting topic I must admit. Now here in the USA we have cloth bags or made from other materials but basically reuseable bags. Quite a few people own them and shop with them, though they are easy to forget in the car or even back at home! I've done that myself. In any case I work for a grocery store here in the USA. The plastic bags are cheaper to make and I think that is one reason why they push the plastic more then the paper bags. Did you know paper bags can also attract bugs and the such?

It's easy to forget the cloth bags even inside the trunk or in the back seat, even the front seat as well. Here in the USA for recycling plastic bags many stores have a drop off place, which is great.

Good that you have such area for recycling plastic bags. Yes, cloth bags or ecobags can be easily forget but once you are already used to bring those, you will never forget to bring it in your car. Good day!

Yes because mold can grow in papers it can be a good breeding grounds for insects and bugs. I think the use of plastic bags is good as long as you know how to recycle it or make reuse of it. I admit that I always forgot to bring the ecobags in my car when I went shopping or grocery, but as much as I can, I will leave the bag inside my car so I will not forget it anymore.

Yes, you are right. We should really shift to using paper bags. However, what about the wet items like meat? Maybe we should also think about how to make biodegradable plastics right? Aside from using paper bags, parents should also shift to cloth diaper instead of disposables that take hundred of years to degrade if they would really degrade.

You got a good idea. Using cloths in some products can be helpful. Malls are already claiming that their plastics are biodegradable or oxo-degradable but still, it will take years to decompose the said plastics. Wet products can be wrapped in papers too. Using the traditional rattan basket is a great help too.

Hi, In our place, stores still pack their goods in plastic. Every time I see one packing the things I buy in plastic, I would demand to take it as it is if I can hold it in my hands or place it in my pocket. Personally, I can't afford to dispose the plastic just about anywhere, I feel guilty whenever I do it so I habitually stash them in a place if the plastic is worth saving for recycling. If I can, I would go without plastic in my shopping bag.

I am happy to inform you my friend that here in our province we have already adapted the use of Ecobags (recyclable and reusable bag) , in lieu of plastic bags. You can see people carrying their own colorful ecobags walking in the city.
