I have my laptop for almost 4 years now, and I've never done a format. Lately it was getting really hot and slow, even though I was using a laptop base with cooling fan. But I have so many files inside that I was hesitating every time my brother was saying that I need to install everything from the beginning! Now that I'm staying with him for a few days, he helped me format my laptop and since then everything runs really fast! I enjoy going online without having to wait for the pages to load. And I think it was also good for the computer because now it's not so hot when it works. I saved all my files before erasing everything and fortunately I've finished installing most of the programs that I was using before! It reminds me of the first months when I had first bougth the laptop and it was working perfectly!

Right now I have double backup! I have one seperate hard disc in the laptop and an external one with my files so everything is stored and safe. I have some important files, photos, projects etc that I wouldn't like to loose!

I am glad to know that you have got the normal performance of the PC back to you. I also wish to format all the files inside my PC but it is not quite easily possible becuase there are many important files and photos. So I cannot do it alone now. Anyway I should do formatting my computer because it is too slow and may it contains some worms or virus too.

If you use an antivirus then you should be able to remove the viruses! There is a free one that my brother uses, it's called avast and he says that it's really good. You should always keep a backup of your files just in case something happens to the computer. So if you have your backup then you'll be able to get everything back after the format!

That's good news. Computers will run slowly when years passed. I guess you've installed much applications already. I think it's a good thing to reformat our computers once a year to fully uninstall those unneeded software. Scan the computer at least once a week and update the anti virus and system care too. Just install those software which is really needed. We also need to minimize the tasks we do at a time. Computers can multitask but we also need to consider what will happen if we do that most of the time. Good day...

Yes, I had installed lots of applications that I don't use any more! Multitasking is also something that I was doing and the computer was running really slow! I think that it also helped my hard disk because now it works less when I am doing many things at the same time!

Well....This is good. My opinion in the case of format is like that i have installed the latest Norton internet security and whenever i log on to my laptop i do scan it for seeing any malware file and use CCleaner to delete unwanted & temporarily files from my laptop. Last time I formatted my laptop before two month because there was a problem of slow speed and i did not have any antivirus software installed so i thought there was virus attack and i formatted it. Format definitely increases the speed of laptop but i have heard too many format within short period of time can damage laptop.

Yes, I know that formats might be harmful if you do them all the time! But sometimes it's needed. You can find free antivirus that's very good as well. Right now I am using kaspersky, but I am thinking about changing to a free one when my 1-year code ends. But even with the best antivirus, viruses might appear to our computer so we should be very careful with the pages that we open!

You must have a very good laptop and take good care of it! Mine needed 10 minutes just to start the windows before formatting it! So it was a necassity to format it and take some programs that I never use out of the disc. However, it has 2 hard disks so I kept the one of them untouched and I only formatted the other one, so I can access all the important files directly from the laptop.

I have only had my laptop for a few months and I am pretty happy with it. I've never done a format, but my dad usually sorts my computer out for me. I did have a laptop that was doing what yours was doing getting really hot and slow. However, I've also got a new one now so it doesn't really matter.

When you get a new lapotop it's feels great! It has better technology and runs faster than the old models! Unfortunatey I didn't have that option right now, so this format saved me from the slow speed when I am browsing the web and running my applications! Enjoy your new laptop!!

Hi sweet, I was told to clear the browsing history lIke caches, uuloadIng, etc regularly to keep my laptop running smoothly. I do my best clear them weekly. I dI'd so daily previously but I find it's inconvenient that I had to type the Url that I had surfed a day before. I try to get rid of files that are no longer in use as well. It's really irritating to work on a slow running laptop Happy posting

Hello! It's very good that you clear the cookies and browsing history, I was also adviced by a friend that works with computers to do that and even though it is irritating to type all addresses and urls from the beginning, it's good for the computer! Another member here also suggested ccleaner which is also very good, it cleans everything and the computer runs faster.

Yes, this is normal... after some time using yout PC you need to do things in order to keep it going smoothly. Specially windows OS gets slow over time and need to be defraged or even formatted from time to time. I started using Linux about 2 years ago and I've not noticed this anymore: my pc really runs like the first day I installed this OS... awesome :)

I've never used Linux and I am not very familiar with it. Is it that good? I used to have windows vista and now I updated to windows 7 which seems a bit lighter and faster for my laptop! I'll consider your advice for the future when I decide to buy a new laptop! Thanks :)

Well when you did the reformat, you have probably clean up your laptop from registry errors and all other stuff that made it slow down. As we continue to use the laptop there will be registry errors as well as viruses that will certainly slow it down and perhaps even damage the laptop. In my case, I have my laptop for. 2 years now, it is still functioning that way it is when I bought it. I have a friends who installed applications on my laptop to clean for errors and remove junk files, I also defragment from time to time so that files are not scattered. Great thing that you have done what you have.... Enjoy and continue to care for your laptop.

Sometimes it needs a lot of courage to re-format a computer or laptop. Hesitation will always prevails if you don't have the guts to do it. Sometimes, we will be contented to the slow , crawling speed of our gadgets because of fear that something might went wrong. And because of your courage, you are rewarded with a more speedy laptop simply because you don't hesitate to re-format it.

Hi friend, good to know that your laptop is working faster after the formatting work, we must keep our system clean and remove the unwanted files in the proper time to increase the speed of the system. Hope you are enjoying a lot with this good speed

This is a good tip for me. I just recently bought a laptop and want it to stay for long. What I usually do is update all my files in a USB so that when something goes wrong not all files will be gone forever...

I think that saving our files regularly is necessary! My friend's computer crashed one day before her dissertation presentation, thankfully she had saved everything at the external disc. You never know what might happen at the computer, especially if you have it for a long time like me! Having a backup can save you from losing everything!

Don't know if formting was neesary. Maybe a defragmenting an disk cleanup.
