Will Lofty Ideals Keep Us Safe?

US troops in Afghanistan are fighting alongside about 350,000 NATO trained Afghans that supposedly are on our side. These NATO trained "peacekeepers" are increasingly turning against their allies, the NATO forces, and turning their guns on them. Hence this news item: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-19292745 Most of the world defends the Islamic as being peace-loving people. Political correctness in this instance has already gotten a lot of NATO forces killed and will continue to do so unless military strategies are changed to prevent it. What is your opinion on this issue? We as Americans embrace lofty ideals of spreading freedoms to other nations, but how can we do so in barbaric societies and still keep ourselves safe?

Hello friend, thanks for the discussion. I feel we should remove ourselves from Afghanistan. It has been proven many times, by other countries, that Afghanistan is not changing to anyone's idealism. They will take whatever we give them, and use it their way and smile at us while they slip the knife between our ribs. Russia almost went broke because of Afghanistan and we are putting our country way into debt that could be slowed significantly by existing Afghanistan. The cost to us financially and in human lives is not worth the effort. It is obvious that they "put-on" the appearances they would have us believe the change, and then they return to the same old ways when they are tired of our interference. Some countries are not meant to be democratic and at the rate we are going, we may not be a democratic country much longer. There are already indications that our democratic nation is dying of overindulgence of other countries invading into our nation and politics. Currently, we have a president who believes we need to redesign the Constitution and blatantly does as he pleases and congress allows him too. He is even up for re-election when the truth, as far as I'm concerned, is he should be impeached. I not saying any of this in order to say the other presidential candidate is an improvement. I do not believe he is any better than what we already have. I'm saying neither of them should be president and I'm ashamed of the parties who are presenting them as candidates. We cannot keep ourselves safe when we consistently interfere in other countries. As a nation we have too many bleeding hearts who think they have the responsibility of making barbaric nations modern. You cannot go into a nation 300 years behind the times and bring them to modern standards by military means. Those countries need to grow because they want to, like China has. I do not agree with China's politics either, but they are a far more modern country than Afghanistan is or will be because of our interference.

I feel the US needs to remove its truth, and allow these countries to turn out however they may. Our constant interference with foreign policy has cost us in money and human life. I'm almost tempted to say this country should close off its borders and focus strictly on domestic policy.

I don't think the US should be isolationist. There is a lot we could and should do to help other countries, but we need to seriously rethink our methods and strategies to find ones that will get the job done better than it is being done now.
