Work culture in most of the hospitals in the state of West Bengal is at stake.

A few days ago I came across a news in a local Bengali newspaper that an outsider was caught red handed while giving a tetanus injection to a patient at the emergency ward of Suri Sadar Hospital in Birbhum, West Bengal. The outsider when accosted by local people claimed to have been standing in for a Group D employee who he said paid him Rs4500=00 a month. No Group D employee is entitled to do such an act which a doctor or a nurse is supposed to do. Moreover, it is not understood how an outsider who is not at all a staff of the hospital performs duty of a genuine staff of the said hospital. As far as I know the Group D employees are looked after by a Ward Master and above all, there is a superintendent who is supposed to supervise the activities of all the staffs attached to the hospital including the doctors. So, there was definitely negligence in supervising duty of both the superintendent and the Ward Master. So, a proper investigation should be carried out to look into the whole matter. It would be better if the probe includes the functioning of all other hospitals in the state. It seems it has been the work culture in most of the hospitals in the state. This is because this particular incidence came a day after a Group D employee was caught stitching a patient’s wound at Calcutta’s SSKM Hospital which is the most prestigious hospital in the state. So if this state of things can happen in a Calcutta Hospital, then anything can happen anywhere in any hospital in the state. So this work culture should have to be changed at any cost as the question of life and death are involved with it and strict action should be taken against those found guilty. Isn’t it?

All the government hospitals not only in our state but also in other pats of India have really turned into a hell and the government is quite ignorant of it.

As long as these dirty politicians would rule over us, there would not be any improvement in any government institution, be it a hospital or a school or a college. So common people often need to protest.

The situation has not improved even after Mrs Mamata Banerjee came to power in the state. People had confidence in her and it was expected that things would change. But I am extremely sorry to say that as chief minister of the state, she could not make any noticeable change in the services rendered by the state run hospitals in spite of sincere efforts from her end. Unless the mentality of all the staffs concerned changes, there cannot be any remarkable change in this most important department of the government.

The private hospitals are taking the advantage of it and exploit people who are compelled to visit them for a better treatment.
