I Still Prefer To Use A 'Proper' Camera

Despite being skint now I am lucky enough to own one of those Sony Cybershot Digital Cameras (with a screen on the back) but I would say that, from the front, it looks like a conventional camera. I bought it in the good old days when I had money to spend.
Even when I had a mobile phone I would still prefer to take pics with my Cybershot so I would take both out with me wherever I went, even though it was a pain to take the camera out of its case. I would much prefer to do that than take a pic from my phone. The camera has outlasted the phone as I don't have to pay monthly fees for it. I've got the thing for life now, which is marvellous!
Obviously, technology has moved on since then but I can honestly say, even if I possessed the most advanced phone yet I can say with confidence that my 7.2 megapixel camera is the baby for me!
And why all those megapixels anyway? What's that all about? I think the minimum now is about 14.2 or something. I can take more than acceptable pics with my 7.2 thanks very much!
By the way, I used to love Kodak point and shoot cameras where the viewfinder would have to be at eye level to take a pic. How old-fashioned lol. Mind you, me and my friend Caroline LOVED visiting Jumbo Pix every week to pick up our snaps of our nights out!
Have Kodak gone bust now? How sad.

I too prefer a camera to a mobile phone camera any day. It actually feels like a camera in the hand and that is very important. :) Of course, now it is point and shoot and the photos are digitals and not the paper ones of my old Kodak camera. I currently use a Nikkon Coolpix to shoot photos. The Tiger, my previous avatar and the Two Polar bears are all shot by this camera.
Cheers!

I Too have a Nikon Cool pix.. this is actually my third Upgraded model.. I am currently using the touch screen model S230.. I LOVE the phics it takes.. they are so clear.. And I use them on Zazzle to earn money with.. so they have to be good quality photos.

And very nice they are too! I know what you mean about a camera feeling like a camera, that's important to me as well and I love the tactile nature of my present one..it's all silver and looks miles more expensive that it cost. It's a DSC-W55.

It seems that Your digital camera has yet been out of date, even though so many years elapse.I calculate that you bought it round about 2008.I have no digital camera.Sometimes I take pics with my mobile phone with 2 megapixel. If the pics are enlarge, they appear as a blur and there are many mosaic on them .

Yes, I think you're correct because my previous camera (also a Sony but not the same model) got damaged whilst I was at work..and I know for a fact that was during 2007..my new purchase came some months later..probably in 2008 like you said.
How awesome that you knew this, well done for remembering the model order!

I am glad that my memory serves me well.I remember you have mentioned in a discussion you quitted your job in 2008.Please bear for me to keep asking one question after another.I don't know what " model order" means.I am none the wiser after searching it online.

Digital cameras are great, we can see the images we are taking while we are taking them and they have great definition. I remember the amount of times I took pictures when I was younger that when I had them developed, were nothing like I hoped. I used to use my first phone for a while but the definition was so bad, the images were always small and when I tried to expand them they were a blur. That is what the pixels allow for, since a pixel is the amount of dots(blue, red, yellow) grouping in a photo, the more there are the more it is possible to zoom. A friend of my cousin went with them on holiday and he took images with his camera, and they compared it with theirs, the images were amazing, the zoom capability, the definition. Not to say that theirs were bad, but he described it as a normal TV and Digital, both are fine but one has that little extra. I still use my old camera that only has 3.2 megapixels it is all the camera I need right now.

I wonder what size the photos could get to under the old 'negatives' system? It would be interesting to find out.

Ditto. I still prefer a regular camera to a cellphone. I have a Canon and a Sony and both go everywhere with me. I will even (particularly at action-packed events such as Civil War battle reenactments) take video with one while simultaneously taking snaps with the other.
Both have screens, but my Canon also has a viewfinder which I find invaluable particularly on those squinty sunny days.
A 7.2 MP camera is fine for posting photos on the internet or sending through e-mail. The higher MPs are only useful if you are PRINTing 8x10s or 11x14s or larger sizes. In spite of what many people think, those large MP photos are NOT suitable for the internet since their full size exceeds a browser's resolution anyway.

That's a very interesting post, thanks very much for commenting. I'd often wondered what the higher resolutions were for and you have explained it perfectly for me.
Mine has a little video feature on it as well, only for about 10 minutes I think before the battery runs low but it's been brilliant for filming Mum's cats playing..that kind of thing. Nothing too elaborate lol.

Hi,
Even if my cellphone can take pictures, I still prefer the DSLR camera for their superior picture-taking capabilities. Cybershots has the limitation of having fixed lenses that cannot respond to changing conditions such as lights and shadows, angle and distance.
DSLRs has the capability of changing lenses, for micro to macro to long distance shots. However they have the inherent characteristic of being too expensive for my budget.

My Sony has one of those Carl Zeiss lenses and it does have various settings on it. However, I tend to use Auto a lot and, judging by my avatar, my SIL used that as well lol. It did the job though as it was dark in that rock club!

I believe DSLR cameras are like conventional cameras where the viewfinder is also at eye level. You use its screen to review pictures but not while photos are being taken. I used to bring my kodak digicam with me everyday but already stopped doing that because I felt my bag is heavier with it plus its batteries. Sony cybershot are awesome. My husband owns one and I can really see the difference in terms of the picture quality. Hoping to own one before but since we already have dslr at home, I find it better but it is not something I can bring with me everyday because it is big.

Are DSLR the same cameras photographers use at sporting events like the Olympics?

it seems my new phone has a flash, but I generally only use it because I have it and I don't have to go look for the roomie's camera...
The camera takes much better pix, but if I want a shot of Sparky's side that spells out the roomie's NAME in his markings, I got that with my phone!

I too prefer to use my digital camera. I have a panasonic lumix that I love but the flash decides it doesnt want to work a lot and then tge pictyres dont turn out good. Then at least I have my cell phone to take pictures with. It doesnt have a flash either but as long as its not dark it doesnt need one. For simple things like adding photos to discussions on mylot I just use my cell phone which has insurance if it breaks unlike my camera which is worth a few hundred more and doesnt have insurance to cover repairs. I attached a photo I just took with my cell phone of my digital camera for you to see. I love that camera other then the flash problems.

I'd love to take a photo of my camera but I haven't got my mobile now (how ironic) lol.
I do like Panasonic Lumix cameras. I see adverts of them on television a lot and they give me the impression they are easy to use, rather like my Sony in actual fact.
I'm glad I have a protective case for my camera (my previous one got damaged because it wasn't in a case in my bag) and it's still like new some 4 years later, or however long I've had it.

I prefer a camera to a cell phone as well.. I have a few cameras I keep upgrading. I found that I like the Nikon cool pix point and shoot cameras quite a lot.
But I recently upgraded and bought a new camera it's a Fuji FinePix HS25 EXR -it's quite amazing although it does not fit in my pocket as the others did.
It has a connected (not removable) zoom lens where I can get up to 30x zoom. and I have taken some amazing pics with it already.
I still carry around my pocket sized Nikon Cool pix in my purse So I can pull that out in a photo emergency...

I love the fact a lot of cameras now you can get in different colours. I kept to the silver one in my case but I could've bought a black one if I so wished. Cameras (even the basic ones) are so gorgeous to look at, even before we use them and I'm so glad you find uses for both your cameras.
Good for you.

I use my phone camera when I am out and about in general day to day life or when hiking and I don't feel like carrying my large camera. But around the home and when I feel like taking a big bag, then I like to use my "proper" camera. It is a Nikon digital SLR which is quite big for a lot of those times when you may not be going to be taking too many photos. My phone is 8 megapixels from memory so it takes a pretty good close up photo in good light, but it is not really good for low light or zooming.
The other thing I love about having an SLR camera is that it does have a viewfinder that you can actually look through. This is better in sunny conditions as you an actually see what you a re doing. But you do then smudge greasy marks across the screen with your nose!

Comedy Carpet! Only in England hey!
Well I guess the best comedy ever is British so it is a deserved place to have something like this I guess. What a job to create it though. Incredible!

The creator was none too pleased when a strip of it had to be removed because it was "too near the tram tracks."
Only in Blackpool!

LOL! Do you know something? I was researching my camera online to see how long I've had it and it's at least 5 years. I began reading a few reviews on it and I DIDN'T EVEN REALISE IT HAD A VIEWFINDER ON IT! When I was in Blackpool last time I took a photograph of the Comedy Carpet and the sun was shining directly onto the screen so I had no idea if the pic would turn out or not. If I'd known about the viewfinder then I could've used that instead!
DOH!
By the way, this is the Comedy Carpet - in case you were wondering and even if you're not lol.

Have Kodak gone bust now?
A few years ago, I interviewed for a company which used to be Kodak. They did a few things like big industrial printers and softwares for pictures. I think they're not as big as before, but they're still doing fine.
As far as taking pictures is concerned, I've gone the phone-route. Aside from the ease of not having a case, it's also easier to upload online or email pics to family.

Above is just one of the stories cirulating about Kodak at the moment. It's the film they've stopped producing, as far as I can gather.

Well, I hear where you're coming from. My little cousin is like that. She has a smart phone but still prefers her digital camera. Me on the other hand am not a camera person. If I want to take pictures I just use my phone. I have the iPhone and it has an 8 pixel HD camera. So I don't feel I need anything else. It takes awesome pictures. And now with the new iPhone 5 it will also have panorama. Since I am not a picture taker, I do sometimes regret not taking pictures when I go somewhere. It just seems to take away from the fun.

Why didn't the panaroma setting go into the iPhone you have now? I'm sure Apple had the wherewithall to do this.
My Sony is a 7.2 but that does me fine. I just like the fact it looks and feels like a camera, not a phone with a screen.

My line of thought is very identical with your post, yes we even have the same camera, I also own a Sony Cybershot
. I never felt comfortable using the camera on my phone, I use it only as back up.
