Having to wear a seatbelt is an infringement on my freedom?

August 25, 2012 7:26am CST
I heard someone say the other day, an American lady as it happens, that she refuses to wear a seatbelt and any law that states she must wear a seatbelt is an infringement on her freedom. I personally thought this was ridiculous as the law is there for her own safety. But then again, if it is for her own safety then should it not be her own decision, the same way that smoking is legal even though it kills you! Would love to hear your thoughts on the matter!

It does sound to me like she was being a bit*h about the whole incident. I'm sure she's aware of the security seat belts can offer. Prima donna moment.

Saying that wearing a seatbelt is an infringement of one's liberty is like saying that windows are an infringement of one's intimacy. The seatbelt was designed so that the driver or the passengers would not fly through the windshield. Those who are not wearing are a risk not only to themselves, but also to the other traffic occupants. Some consider the wearing of the seatbelt for the passengers in back to be optional.I think this is just plain wrong. In case of an accident, the passenger from the back will fly through the windshield or in the head of the front passengers, with a potential disastrous outcome. So,i think the woman has some serious issues, not to be faced outside a mental institute. Wear your seatbelt!

I would wear a seat belt when I am in the front because that is the law and do not think it infringes on my freedom. I also feel that with the windshield closer, I might go forward if there was a sudden stop. Also there is hardly anything to hold on to. With the back seat unless someone insisted and usually when they do it is a ridiculous reason, I will not wear the seat belt, because I can grab onto the seat in front, make sure the doors are locked, and hold onto something. Also the seat belts in the back are usually not easy to get around you, if you are not a skinny person because really that is where the children usually sit. I also remember when seat belts were not that easy to use even in the front, but now they are, so it would be best for the lady to use the seat belts so when there is an accident she does snot fly through the window.

Your reasons for not wearing a seatbelt in the rear are not very good I might say. In an accident you don't have time to hold on to anything or the strength to stay holding on to anything. Think about trying to catch something travelling at 60km/h that weighs the same as your body weight. Impossible isn't it. Well that is what it would be like trying to hold on to the door or seat in an accident! You should wear your seatbelt in the front or back.

I find it harder to put the seatbelt on in the rear. Usually what happens is that by the time I put the seatbelt on, we are already at our destination and I do not like her or him to stop and get out of the driver's seat and put the seatbelt on for me. It is not that I can hold onto something. It is that they make it hard to put the seatbelt on since they often link the seat belts for both sides together. And unlike the front, they do not have separate seats, it is jut one couch at the back. With the front, I can just pull out the seat belt and I can see the place to put it between the seats. They do not have bucket seats in the back and why they do not have the locks besides the doors, I have no idea.

I also saw that you were understandable about those who are afraid of the car turning over and they were afraid of wearing their seat belts would prevent them from getting out if they fell into a ditch filled with water. So why is it all right for them to not wear the seat belt, but II have to even though when it rains here and we had the flood of the century a few years ago.

Maybe she should check out the evidence of unrestrained rear seat passengers crushing the driver against the wheel on impact in a crash..I wonder would She have a problem with airbags?

I agree, the law shouldn't force someone to wear seat belt just because in theory buckle up is for her own safety sake. But if she refuse to feel safe inside her own car; she should have the rights to decide whether she want to have that protection on her or not. The seat belt may restrict her freedom of movement, that violate her constitutional rights on freedom of choice and liberty to decide as an adult. Sometime it is just su*k when an adult person can't decide for herself what is safe or not for her own sake but have to obey the order of the government of the day.

I think wearing a seat belt should be optional. Sure, you hear incidences where if someone would have been wearing their seat belt they could have saved their lives, but then you also hear of incidences that if not wearing a seat belt would have saved their lives. I don't know about nowadays, but when I was in school and had to ride a school bus(I know showing my age) there weren't any seat belts on school buses. So if it's a law every vehicle made should have seat belts then. The government and states have to much control over our lives.

They have done studies that seat belts on busses are more dangerous or something. People still ride school busses, so I don't know what you're talking about that it showing your age.

Offkey, I didn't know if they now had seat belts on buses or not. When I rode a school bus that's been over 20 years ago!! So if seat belts are dangerous on school buses then why should a car that isn't capable of holding that many people have to have them? As I stated before the government and states have too much control over our lives and when they pass rules there are always exemptions. So if seat belts should be mandatory, why are there exemptions???

Well given that freedom, government are only concerned about the safety of all that's why there are strict on this rule. It's really ridiculous that someone would refuse to wear a seatbelt. Except of course if some wants to die really soon. She must have killed herself if she really want to experience accident.
