is greed the most dangerous of evils in the World today

I live in a place where I see a lot of evil in everyday life. This comes in many forms from desperate poverty and abuse of those in poverty, to crime and violence. But when I was thinking about the situation it occurred to me that nearly all of the evils that I witness stem from one thing - greed. Most of the violence that is perpetrated is due to greed - someone wanting something that someone else has. Abuse is usually about greed - wanting self gratification even at the expense of someone else. most people are kept in poverty because others abuse the system for their own wealth and gain - greed! I would be interested in the views of others on this topic. The worst part of this is that I feel that I am not somehow separate from the problem but on many levels I am part of the problem, because I let my life be governed to a degree by the consumer mindset that is controlling the Western World.
