acrylic bargain!

nails - my new nails!

I have terrible nails. I don’t bite them, but because they are fairly short, people generally think that I do, but I don’t. What generally happens with my nails is that when they get to a length where you can see what I call, the white bit, they split at the sides and break off. So I decided that no matter what I wore, makeup, hair etc, my hands always looked dreadful, and I wanted to do something about it. So whilst shopping last Thursday night, I came across a sign in the beauty salon saying a full set of acrylic nails was half price, and decided to go for it. I have posted a picture of the finished result. What fascinated me was the way they did it. This purple solution, mixed with what looked like icing sugar, made a candle wax like substance, which when dried, was as hard as the road! It was amazing, and it made me think that it puts meaning on the sentence, “there is beauty in science” .. What do you think of this?

I've tried it and I didn't succeed! I used to have the same problem with you with my nails until a friend gave me a hand cream that also made my nails stronger. So I started growing them long but found it uncomfortable tinkering with my gadgets that i cut if off short again!

Can you share what the cream is I would love to try it out. When I get my nails done I have them the shortest length possible for this same reason. Right now I have almost nothing for nails and it feels funny doing things when I am use to having nails fake or real ones.

mine only come to just above my finger tips and no more. i am typing really quickly, as i am a trained typist and my nails do not slow me down at all :)

@Tina, the cream is from watsons, it's a handcream with vitamin E. @chicks, mine too but it still bothers me. I've never had long nails and i'm really not used to that.

They look great. I have the same problem you have with your nails and I hate it. I am getting ready to get mine done soon because I hardly have anything and I don't like it. I normally get my nails done with my birthday money from my in-laws every year.

They look good chicks, like you I can't grow my nails out long, so I trim them, so they don't look like I bite them, I don't see why someone would think that unless you cut very close to the quick. It is also ironic that my daughter and I just talked about this yesterday. She is fortunate that when she was in school and not working, she was able to grow her nails out and paint them beautifully, that some asked if they were fake. But now that she is a groomer, she can't, because the clippers snag her nails, so she doesn't keep them as long. Though this year, when she took a week vacation, she did go and had tips placed on a couple of her shorter nails. Now that she is back at work, she wants the tips off, because they bother her...lol..But my main concern was, with fake nails, unless one has money to invest the maintenance, there is is risk of getting fungus between the fake and real nails. I would never do this, because I don't feel I need to, but I suggest if you do, be extra careful with them and keep them as clean as possible..

Yep, she's been a dog groomer about 3-4 years now and she loves it, except now she might have tendonitis like I do..I hope hers heals up quick, because she can't wear a brace while grooming dogs...

well thats the thing, i used to spend a lot every month on make up, concealer, and powder, but since buying really great new skin care products, my skin is amazing, and i am using less and less make up.. so the money i am saving on make up a month, i figure why not put it into my nails instead? .. i'm a receptionist so i have to look good for my job, or else i'd come to work in my jammies lol! what is it your daughter does? is she a dog groomer?

My nails do exactly the same thing. They snap as soon as they appear over my finger tops. True, I abuse them horribly. But it's still frustrating. I used to bite them and I think they're permanently damaged at the sides. I wouldn't go for acrylics personally as I'd rather have scruffy nails than have a pile of chemicals slapped on the end of my fingers, but I must admit they look good and remarkably natural.

but thats the thing! there isn't loads of chemicals! i have extremely sensitive skin, and i have eczema as well and i was terrified of an allergic reaction which is why i never got them before, but it is the smallest amount of glue to hold the tip on, and then the acrylic. there is no other liquids or substances, and all the gels and nail cleansers they used all had aloe etc in them :)

So acrylic isn't a chemical?! From www.enotes.com/acrylic-fingernail-reference/acrylic-fingernail "Artificial nail enhancements are made of acrylic plastic. Acrylic is the generic name given to the type of plastic made from a chemical called methacrylate. There are many types of acrylic resins based on different types of methacrylate molecules, but their chemistry is similar. The acrylic used in sculpted nails is formed by the reaction of a monomer liquid with a polymer powder. The monomers ("mono" meaning "one") contained in the liquid are microscopic chemical units which react together when mixed with chemicals in the powder. The monomers combine with one another in a head to tail fashion to form long fibers. These long chains of connected monomers are called polymers ("poly" meaning "many")." Doesn't sound terribly natural to me!

They do look pretty but I'm not a fan of so much white on the nails like that, I think it kind of looks unnatural. I've never had my nails done before either but I think they did a good job of them for you at least
29 Aug 12
oh no me neither! the white is actually only so big, because my nails were so short, and obviously to make them longer the white had to attach not only onto my own nail, but also had to be long enough to look like long nails. as my nails grow the white will be shorted and shorted until it is just a thin line like regular nails.

Ahhh yeah that makes sense I guess. Shame your nails don't grow much without breaking. There should be things you can put on them to strengthen them surely
