Why Do Idiots Seek Out Danger?

I've stayed up really late (currently 2:43am) as I am worried about Hurricane Isaac, particularly since it's the 7 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans. Can you believe that? No, I can't either. It seems like yesterday. So, imagine my dismay at discovering (on the Live Wire of WDSU) that idiots are actively seeking waves, etc, in relation to this latest hurricane..and children are with them too. I mean, what's wrong with these people? Turning round to wave at cameras whilst waves crash all around them. Are they insane or what? I really cannot understand why ANYONE would want to venture out in such extreme conditions, never mind take your kids with you. Evacuate like most of the people there, for goodness' sake. I hope the damage is minimal. I wouldn't want any deaths or injuries but people going out looking for the storm, well, I'm afraid they don't have any sympathy from me. By the way, there is a Carlisle in Louisiana and it is currently experiencing lashing rain and severe winds.

But don't you know, they are invulnerable... I'm sure if they get hurt they'll try to find someone to sue...

Grant that they are press photographers and want to take photos that astound the world of Hurricane, with the idea in which "nothing ventured, nothing gained",but it beats me how they could have taken their kids with them.It is not too much to say they took the kids'lives as trifling matter.

They were just members of the public, no cameras in sight which is worse than official photographers being there in my view.

That is to say, they were posing as heroes.

Personally it often amazes me as well when you see people doing this, and then people wonder why someone turns up missing. I would think even with things like tornadoes people would want to take cover and be cautious instead of wanting to watch everything. Especially people that tend to always want to watch never stopping to think about their life, or danger it could be in.

Yes, I know what you mean. And they laugh whilst they're doing it which never fails to amaze me.

They look so silly as well. It's not so bad if they're getting paid for it i.e. reporters.

If adults want to thrill seek, fair enough. Putting kids in danger is unacceptable though. I haven't seen the pictures, but that does sound bloody stupid.

I should point out that if people want to put themselves in danger they should have the right to. But that doesn't mean that they should expect other people to put their lives at risk to save them when they get into difficulties.

I agree. It's the laughing bit I couldn't understand, like they were on some rollercoaster ride or something..actually ENJOYING it. Very strange if you ask me!

When I was in university, there was a mountaineering club that hanged out near the library. They would always have their T-shirts on which said "Go climb a rock" in front, and said "Because it's there!" at the back. I asked a friend of mine what the statement at the back meant. He said that's their response to the question 'why they climb a rock?' or 'why they go to dangerous adventures?' or even 'why they go somewhere?'. I think idiots take this slogan a bit too far. I'm sure that when you ask them why they go in front of a hurricane, they'd say 'because it's there!'.

What I cannot stand over here are the idiots who go out in really bad weather only to be rescued for nothing by the Air Ambulance, who rely on public donations to keep going..not by the people being rescued who should be FORCED to donate for being so stupid!

I'm really not sure why, Janey... They say when one's life is empty, they're prone to do crazy things... Taking one's children to the danger is the craziest thing... Some people like danger, but most of them won't like their kids to face any danger... I pray for the kids...

They did this before curfews were imposed but even so, it was wrong of them to take their kids to such a dangerous place, especially when the reporter was directly in front of them. Wherever that happens get out of the way because some reporters are crazy in the US, but at least they (sort of) know what they're doing and can shelter when they know something isn't quite right. The members of the public don't know "Jack Sh*t" as my Mum would say lol.

It's like those who chase tornadoes or go skinny dipping in the winter (I forget what its' called, there's a specific name for it. They are crazy and seeking danger. That doesn't mean they should involve their kids. I say let the kids have their childhood, keep them safe from harm. Some people are just stupid.

I think the organised tornado chasers are OK, especially the ones that are doing it for tracking purposes, usually for the weather channels perhaps? I don't know exactly. It's the amateurs I have a problem with!

Crazy people are all over the world and they clearly dont care who they hurt in the process. Whenever a hurricane is heading to my country people normally do the same thing .

I wasn't living in Carlisle at the time but this city isn't a million miles away from Lockerbie (where that aircraft came down some years ago) and hubby tells me that "rubbernecks" actually travelled from here to take a look at the wreckage..so it goes on here too!

I agree with you. Personally, I truely believe those people are crazy, particularly when they are endangering not only their own lives, but the lives of their children by seeking the waves that you speak of. My prayers go out to all of you in Louisana. And I pray for the best.

I was dying for a wave to sweep them all away. Awful of me to think that way but it would've served them right for being so stupid.

I agree with you. But I donĀ“t understand either those people that seek tornadoes. They are filmed and there are shows to teach idiots to do the same. No wonder many such people would want the notoriety of being shown at those dangerous situations. Worse still, I suppose that if they get caught in the middle of danger, there will be policemen or firemen who will risk their precious lives for them.

I do know that tornado watching is an exact science and it's become more sophisticated over time..and in turn the understanding of them has increased. This is a good thing..but I agree the ones that don't take it seriously are asking for trouble.

You are right! And I think that they are just stupid. Maybe they have forgotten the people on the roofs waiting for help in New Orleans. Or maybe they don't understand that it's dangerous to make jokes with mother nature. But thanks God this Isaac seems not too dangerous.

It's quite ironic that it was 7 years to the day that Katrina struck and I'm relieved Isaac wasn't (or isn't) as deadly, but even so, a Category 1 isn't to be ignored really, is it? I heard about those people on the roofs. That must've been extremely scary to be up there not knowing when help would arrive. I take it they have all been rescued now?
