Why Meralco have no competition until now

You know what, if there are other electric company here in our country, our bills will be lower. But because Meralco is like our sole provider of electricity here in the Philippines, They have so many reasons to be incompetent, that's why we had been suffering with awfulness with their services. Remember when we have no electricity for days and its freaking summer. Then our electric bills are so high because they wanted us the consumers to pay for their own dept. Once I have my solar panels, I will quit being their subscriber. This makes me wonder, why we don't have any other electric company that provides electricity for our country? I am so sick of the increasing electric bills.

Well I do not know but I guess utility companies like electricity are just hard to setup since if you have two electric companies infrastructure wise it is just difficult. Unless a competitor with wireless technology would come and no more of the need of electric post and electric cables to spread around. I also know that congress granted this exclusive franchise to operate in the areas they applied for. I happen to experience a non meralco electric supplier in the province and it proves that still Meralco's services are far superior than this electric cooperatives that are spread around the country. Their services are poor and frequent brownouts are a part of daily events in this places.

Well I guess if you got to be rich then you have to invest at least 2-3 million for the solar panels to run a complete household. That 100k would only be able to light you maybe the household lights and the rest of your electrical appliance like the TV, Ref etc cannot be supported by that. I am just not sure but Congress only approves one electric supplier in an area. I am not sure about this one but if you would look around the country there is only one electric supplier that is servicing certain areas and I have not seen an area where there are two electric companies running.

If I will get to be rich someday, I will give them competition and I am not going to stop until their down. for now I am still saving money so I can afford that 100,000 peso solar panel and I shall be free. yeah that is expensive but its lifetime freedom from them.

100,000 peso solar generator runs a whole household I know. The one that can run light bulbs only is around 10,000 pesos.

Yes Letran, that's what i have been wondering about too. Why is there a monopoly of electricity? Here in our province, the same is true, one electric company only. And though, consumers have been regularly paying their dues, they are always said to be in debt to Transco, (National Transmission Co) , so much so that they are always threatened to be closed, thus, will mean for us consumers that we will have no electricity as long as the debt isn't settled. How i really wish there will be other electric company or the solar electricity will be implemented.

I am not Letran, I think if I became a Billionaire I already know what business venture I will expand on. Our country is so fit for Hydro energy because we have waterfalls and oceans. Our country must have multiple solar power plants because our country have a very hot tropical climate. We also have Geothermal sources. The poops of Pigs and Cows in farms can be converted to electricity too. Yet Meralco still prefers fossil fuels because then can abuse the price.

Upps, sorry Albert , for mistakenly calling you Letran. And you are so correct. There are other cheaper ways in our country on how to generate electricity indeed. However, this will indeed incur very very plenty of capital! But how i wish another company could rival the monopolizing companies in the Philippines.

Because NO one has really tried to invest more on proper plan in creating a good reliable power plants.there was another kind of energy that uses both oxygen and fuel for energy but it's only available in commercial purposes. I think they have no choice since using fossil fuel, wood and water is obviously expensive. if only bataan powerplant was use, really sad though

actually water energy plants, wind turbines and solar panels are more cos efficient than fossil fuels but meralco prefers fossil fuels because it gives them excuses to raise the price of electric bills every month. we actually have geothermal plants here but meralco dont use them. its all about profit I guess.

hi, I think Meralco only focuses on Metro Manila and nearby provinces. In Mindanao for example, its not Meralco who runs the electric distribution system. And in fact it the cost is much lower. I think its not Meralco who made lots of money in the electricity business but rather the power producers. Simply because they are the ones dictating the price of electricity.

I agree. In our place, we have a local electric company while some parts are powered by Meralco. However, our household is under the control of the local company. Even if they are solar panels, they are not exactly cheap to buy and they might get ripped with very harsh winds of our storms.

they wont get ripped unless you hit them with a sledge hammer. Its designed for Harsh winds.... there is wind turbines for that and they love harsh winds.

I wish a foreign company will go here and compete with them.
