Have you ever heard of Wanbol University?

If not, let me educate you. Wanbol University is the dearest alma mater of our Senate Majority Floor Leader, Tito Sotto. How he ever got hold of the position, ask me not, the only thing I know is that that august chamber has ceased to be august since the declaration of Martial Law in 1972. Which brings me to a point actually, that the beginnings of this so-called Wanbol University, the etymology of which probably refers to One Ball, or whatever, and the venue was right there on that idiot tube called television, was back in the 70's, a time when people were repressed, and the only safe jokes allowed bordered on idiocy. Thus, the rise of Wanbol University. That university now takes pride in honoring its alumnus, Tito Sotto, as the first, according to him, ever senator bullied in the internet. And by way of hailing that, the caricature of a major daily, showed the senator dressed as a clown, holding a Wanbol University book, the Iskul Bukol Handbook (that's the title of the tv show), and the caption reads: I HAVE IT ON GOOD AUTHORITY.... ....THAT PLAGIARISM IS NOT A CRIME! Why? The good senator, in an emotional, personal, seemingly passionate speech he made in the senate, to explain why he was against the RH Bill, used a blog as his own. verbatim. Now, he not only has two issues to debate upon himself, the RH Bill, his back-up contention of which are shallow and detrimental to his family, and, plagiarism. Who wants to bet if he understands the word.

You are very correct, eileen! Sen. Tito is one of those senators who is "nagdudunong-dunungan" ( feeling like an intelligent person). Now, that was openly discovered by all the people. Had i been in his shoes, i could have apologized in behalf of his staff. But then again, that would be blatant admittance that all his speeches were of his staff's efforts.

Yes Wanbol University, came from " Iskul Bukol" ( head lump from bumping school, not sure if my translation is accurate or makes sense like the program). To add, "Wanbol" is derived from "one ball" a term in billiard wherein you 2 balls are near or side by side each other and no matter where you hit the object ball, the other ball will go inside the pocket. Billiard had a bad name during those times, failing and dropping out of school is blamed on the game, so is cutting classes , this was a time before Efren Reyes became Champion, I played the game even if it was somehow looked down upon ( i don't fail in school anyway). Most of the time Iskul bukol opens the program with students playing in the billiard hall, from there you could already guess the graduates they would produce hahaha...

Guess what, I tried my hands at billiards, too. If the female was allowed to hit those pool sticks, I would have been champion. And yes, I admonished my aunt and my Mom for not allowing my brothers and cousins to play billiards, for billiards is really a game of skill, necessitating a lot of intelligence in geometry. I brought my girls once to the billiard shoppe, sigh, they don't like it. Thanks for that little lesson up there, I learned something, and perhaps that could be a record of what was the real score those times, what the guys do when they hang around together.

I agree the good senator should have the sense not to make anymore statement regarding this issue and just apologized since the author of the blog is simply demanding that and no other request or legal action is being taken. But all I can see is arrogance on his part. I hope he could change his mind on this soon.

It's a shame where he should just apologize from the beginning. I never voted for him and probably never will. shame to his alma mater who he actually he gradute from the same college that is in my username now. it proves that he never really study that hard during his college days but mere school bukol and siga forma to boot. now, that situation has gone worse, apology for the plagiarism would have ended it all

Now Knight, you made me laugh. But hey, don't feel so bad, I like Letran, at least the Letran that I know of. And sure, I don't equate Letran with the likes of this Sotto and his company. They had actually diminished the intelligence of the viewing public with the foolish antics they had been passing as entertainment. There are good comedy shows that could make the people laugh without resorting to foolishness. Keep the good name of your school. You will make it proud.

that august chamber has ceased to be august since the declaration of Martial Law in 1972. I was not yet formed at that time but I will take your word for it. Back in the days when I was becoming an observer in politics and government, I don’t think the Senate ever got its glory back. Anyway, this post is simply amazing. I have to praise you and your muse for sharing this. I think we should send it verbatim to the dearest alumni of Wanbol University. See what he thinks. Anyway, I ‘ think I can ever reverse my opinion of the senator (and his ilk) ever since this issue started. I just can’t help sometimes laughing that he and his chief of staff are being ridiculed and the subject of very nasty emotions among netizens. I don’t know if you heard but his manong on the Senate proposes on making a bill regarding plagiarism. I don’t know if they are serious or just riding on the issue (As what most politicians and lawmakers do). I just hope this serves as a good and lasting impression o the electorate. And I hope no one gets elected from that University ever again.

jeanneyvonne, the production manager of that show is a very close friend, and upon reading my blog, she reminded me of that little detail. It truly skipped my mind that my friend started her career on that show but I told her that in life, we simply must spell the truth, or our lives will be in vain. Many of her colleagues had also read my blog, I just hope that they realize they have a greater responsibility than mere entertaining. As for the Senate President, he had done a good job in the Corona impeachment, but the recent comment he made coming to rescue Sotto might be a sign that he is already faltering, due to old age.

I thought you were talking bout the television show itself but guess what it is where it all started.I am not condemning Sen.Sotto and I am not against him who would have thought that an actor/comedian would have a place in the senate truly enough television artists should have talent and guts to stay in the lime light but what happened to Sen.Sotto is a true example that no person can really be perfect in this world. We just have to believe in what we believe is true and uphold what you stand for.Since this is the generation of the "netizens" he cannot stop what other netizens have to say against him even if the act was intended or not.He should have asked for permission if he wants to use or qoute a certain blog now he is being bullied and that I think is his own fault.

tipay, always there will be a greater or a lesser person than we are. Therefore, we must know our capacity and put ourselves only where we belong, or where we can achieve the heights of our dreams. Sotto was alright with entertainment, but the senate was not for him. It is not alright to let him get a seat there and make the senate his school. No, legislation must be for the learned, so that these senators could speed up bills and pass it into law, for the welfare of the people.

I laughed so hard seeing your topic for this discussion! hahaha! But yet, you are truly correct. The senator clearly does not know what plagiarism is or he knows what it is but is trying to justify what he did. In my point of view, he should have said it right there and then that what he said was taken from somewhere else, like quoting it during his speech. It was a good thing that the blogger who took notice of the senator's speech was actively in sync with the news. Otherwise, the senator would have gotten away with it.

Glad you had a good laugh, jenny. Good point, he should have admitted his error. But I guess he was too proud to say he was wrong.

Actually, I am not updated with the issue, but from what I heard, Sen Sotto staff made a speech that was copied from the internet... I like Sen Sotto, not because of his previous career as an artist but how he handles his work... I know he is honest and help people all the way. . .

I will not comment on the honesty, for her and his gang has issues in the past which they have a lot of explaining to do. I will stop there. Begin your research.
