As of today squatting is now illegal in the UK

Having your hard earned property taken over by squatters would be my absolute nightmare.
Up until today if a bunch of people invaded your house in the UK when, for example you were on holiday, you could do nothing about it. You would have to find somewhere else to live, costing a small fortune, as the police had no power to evict them. The only option being a lengthy and costly legal battle.
Do you agree with the UK making this illegal?
What is the legal stance in your country?

In our country, we also have a law regarding squatters or also known as informal settlers. However the government also consider the welfare of these people so they are being provided with low priced housing units. The aim of our government is to eliminate informals settlers by giving them a place to live which they can call their own.

As a homeowner i am focusing on my feelings as if my family home got taken over and my children were left homeless. The UK has a focus group who are saying these people need homes but i feel that attitude ignores the pain the houseowner goes through.
I agree that there should be housing for all, but the government needs to impliment that and it was them that ignored the pain it caused up till today. maybe now they will let people have some form of accomadation.

I think that property rights are very important so I do think that the UK is right on with their new law.
It is illegal for squatters here too but if you are renting the property to some people and you want to make them move, it can be a costly process. I think that it also takes around two months to have them physically removed if they refuse to leave.

Squatting is a major problem in my country. The key point here is that there is no law to curb the mushrooming of squatters. The local authorities are only enpowered to demolish these squatters but could not enforce any law to bring these squatters to court. Squatters has not only become a public eye sore but a breeding ground for criminals. I do hope my country could emulate other nations in eradicating squatters otherwise this could become an incurable cancerous disease to the country.

You mean squatting is not illegal in the UK? I could not imagine a country where people could just take over a property even without legal rights and how much if the property has legal owner? And the police or the owners have no power to evict them! That is not fair. I would certainly evict those people out of my house by hook or by crook. Even if there is no law against squatting, morally it is not right to just take over any property. Every country should implement anti-squatting law to protect the interest of its people because there are notorious ones who don't really care about what is right or what is wrong. What they care about is their own benefit.

Squatting should be illegal period. There is this place where me and my family used to visit every other Sunday of the month when I was a kid. It was beautiful, trees everywhere and there was a garden filled with flowers and stuff. The view was beautiful until last year where we went and saw that there were squatters living there. It is such an eye sore. I know that some people don't have the means to buy their own property and stuff but I don't think that give them the right to put up their place in any location that they want. The thing that annoys me the most about squatters is they don't even care about their environment. The lake now is filled with their garbage and no matter how much volunteers try to clean the rivers, they will still dump their garbage in the lake. It's just gets annoying.

If my house is invaded by a bunch of people intending to take over, surely I will do all I can to defend my property. The civilized way is to make a report to the nearest police station and asking their help to evict those people as they are trespassing into a private property. The uncivilized way would be to use force to move them out. That is the way in my country. I find it funny that the British 'police had no power to evict them'.
