Scanning your Computer for Viruses..

The other day I felt worried when I logged onto the internet, I got a message across the screen saying that my provider had suspended my services due to "a possible violation of service". Of course this made me panic so I called right away and it turns out that there was a bunch of "spam like" things kicking out of my computer so he reactivated my internet and told me to run a virus scan. I now find myself paranoid and running my norton scan once every day to be on the safe side. How often do you scan your computer and what anti virus program do you use?
