Favorite Toys from Childhood

Toys certainly have gotten a lot cooler compared to what existed from my childhood, sometimes it makes me jealous actually but I can't wait to have children and play with fun toys with them. Growing up, one of my favorite "toys" was a child sized grocery cart. Might sound odd, but I loved playing "grocery store" with my sisters where we would go into my mothers cupboard and load the cart with groceries and then go up to the clerk (usually I was the clerk) to pay for them. Do you have any memories of your toys from childhood? Or maybe there was a game of some kind that you enjoyed playing? Thanks for sharing your trip down memory lane.

Now we're going to go back to a galaxy far, far away, haha. Yes, I did have favorite toys. There were two games I enjoyed quite a bit and one was called Pickup Sticks, and the other was called Cooties, lol! They were fun and I'm sure Pickup Sticks is probaby still around. Then I had a Monkey Puppet that I loved dearly and he would talk to everyone, ha! I also took him to bed with me every night because I thought he was just soooo cute!

Haha I love your wording choices " galaxy far, far away", come on I'm sure it wasn't that long ago! Hey I think I know of pickup sticks. Is that the game where you'd have a thing in the middle and shove sticks through the holes, the idea was to not let them fall? Or am I way off here?

You are way off, hahaha! Pickup Sticks were a bunch of very colorful thin platic sticks about 8" tall roughly. You would hold them upright but sit them on the ground with your hand around them, then let them go. They would fall all over the place. The object was to pick up as many as you could WITHOUT moving another stick and each color was worth different points, with Black I believe being the highest and there was only 1 Black. Sometimes that Black one would be on the bottom of the pile so it was hard to get hold of until all the other sticks were picked up. It was loads of fun and gave great eye and hand movements and you learned coordination too. Not to brag, but I was pretty good at it, lol! I'm not quite sure what game you're talking about but it sounds like fun too.

Toys have certainly changed a lot since I was younger. However, the old favourites, like Monopoly, Scrabble, puzzles and colouring in books, still remain popular. Child sized grocery carts are also still around.

You're right, a lot of the old favorites still exist and will probably be around until the end of time. I secretly hope that my kids want to play "grocery store", I loved that "game".

I'm sure you're kids will love to play grocery store :-). There's even plastic food you can buy to make the game more realistic. Have fun!

Toys now are a lot cooler -- however I think some of them are getting ridiculous! There are too many computer gadgets that enable children to sit in the house and not use their imagination! When I was little, I played outside most of the time! I couldn't get enough of the outdoors. We had a playhouse that my neighbor's dad built -- we played house there....we would make a store by the tree, make a gas station that we used our peddle cars or bikes to go get gas at and other things. It was a blast...and we usually spent the whole day playing. Ahhh....thanks for making me bring back those days! :o)

I remember playing with friends outside, the time would just fly by and my mother would get upset because I didn't show up when she asked for me to due to losing track of time. You're welcome for bringing you back to those days, I hope you got a smile from it.

My favorite toy was a mechanical duck. I call it "Tweety". It was a gift brought by my dad from Japan. I do not know why I loved that toy so much when all it did was qauck while walking. I remember crying over it when it got broken.

Awe poor "Tweety". I bet this duck was extra special for you because it was a gift from someone special in your life, holds a special place in your heart.

As far as I remembered my toy during that time was a cowboy and its horse.I used to play outdoor games before with friends, classmates and neighbors that time so toys is not a big deal with me that time.So I used to play that toy if I am just at home which is so seldom. Not like kids now that used to play gadgets and latest technology so they just stay at home and seldom interact with other kids.

You have a point. Kids are now satisfied sitting infront of their videogames they don't seem to mind if there isn't a lot of social interaction.

Playmobiles was a big hit with me back in the day also, I had a few sets. A couple sets that stick out in my mind are: the police station set and the hospital set.

I don't think I ever had a favorite toy. The only thing I ever liked were books and comics (not all of them). As long as I can remember I am reading. My kids are the same, already at the age of 2-3 years old they were crazy about books, stories. My youngest is 6 years old, skipped a class is in the 5th class now since 1 week and the teacher says she is astonished she can read such difficult books and is reading so fast.

Reading is a very positive past time for them to have, I'm sure they will be reading at a higher level than their age which is nice. I liked the odd comic growing up as well, did you ever read the archie comics?

Hi friend, good to hear about your favorite childhood toy. We played with a lot of toys during our childhood. Children always have a lot of craze with their toys. I have a cute dog in my child hood and it is my favorite. I don't share it with anyone during my childhood. Now my son's using the same toy for their playings. I have 2 sons and they are fighting a lot to play with my favorite toy.

I think it's great that you were able to pass down your favorite toy, that makes it so special. Maybe one day your grandchildren will also be able to enjoy it.

I remember that my longest running favorite toy from when I was 1-4 years old is a plastic white swan which is a cake topper for my cake on my first birthday. That's my favorite because money is hard when I was growing up and that birthday cake was my first and last for years. I had such wonderful memories of that particular birthday that I kept the topper and as a kid, imagined that the play doh I mashed is my cake and I will place the swan on top of it. Even if my parents can't afford much toys for me then, I don't remember ever feeling that I have lesser toys than my playmates.

I totally understand where you're coming from Raine. Sometimes what seems like a simple object or toy is full of so much positive energy and memories that you wouldn't trade it for a toy which is more expensive.
